The interference of distal humeral plating with the medial and lateral collateral ligaments of the elbow.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the present study was to determine the anatomical relationship and evaluate the potential interference of today's common distal humerus plates with the medial and lateral collateral ligaments of the elbow. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The elbow joints of 23 embalmed upper extremities were dissected. Three different brands of distal humerus double-plating systems were applied in a standardized fashion. We used a caliper to measure the amount of absolute overlap of the plates on the corresponding collateral ligaments. RESULTS: The data show contact and overlap with the media

Anatomic study of the intercostal nerve transfer to the suprascapular nerve and a case report.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the anatomical basis of intercostal nerve transfer to the suprascapular nerve and provide a case report. Thoracic walls of 30 embalmed human cadavers were used to investigate the anatomical feasibility for neurotization of the suprascapular nerve with intercostal nerves in brachial plexus root avulsions. We found that the 3rd and 4th intercostal nerves could be transferred to the suprascapular nerve without a nerve graft. Based on the anatomical study, the 3rd and 4th intercostal nerves were transferred to the suprascapular nerve via the deltopector

An anatomic study of the quadratus plantae in relation to tendinous slips of the flexor hallucis longus for gait analysis.

The aim of this study was to demonstrate the morphology of the quadratus plantae (QP) in relation to the tendinous slips of the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) and their surrounding structures, thereby providing data to understand function of the QP during gait, and for analyzing the movements of the foot and designing postoperative rehabilitation programs. The QP was investigated in 50 specimens of embalmed adult cadavers. The QP inserted into the tendon of the flexor digitorum longus (FDL) and the tendinous slips of the FHL in 96%, and only to the tendon of the FDL in 4%. The tendinous slip of

Topography and spatial fascicular arrangement of the human inferior alveolar nerve.

BACKGROUND: Topography and fascicular arrangement of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) can provide critical information for the estimation of damage to IAN based on patient symptoms, or conversely to evaluate the symptoms resulting from injury to the IAN. PURPOSE: The fascicular composition and organization of the IAN were determined to confirm the microarchitecture of the IAN bundles into each of the mandibular teeth, including the composition of the mental nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The IAN within the mandibular canal (MC) was examined in 30 hemifaces of embalmed Korean cadavers. RESUL

[Degenerative changes of the metatarso-sesamoido-phalangeal complex].

OBJECTS: The aim of this work was to determine the frequency and the location of the degenerative lesions of the hallucal metatarsophalangeal joint in an elderly population. Our results help us to precise the anatomic characteristics of that articular complex. METHODS: Our material comprised 21 feet from embalmed cadaver specimens. We studied the morphometrical parameters for the anatomic description of the first metatarsophalangeal joint of the forefoot. After complete dissection, a specific articular zone-mapping was made with a quantitative evaluation of the chondral lesions. MAIN RESULTS

Morphological changes of the ligamentum flavum as a cause of nerve root compression.

The ligamentum flavum is considered to be one of the important causes of radiculopathy in lumbar degenerative disease. Although there have been several reports anatomically examining the positional relationship between the ligamentum flavum and nerve root, there are few reports on ventral observation. The purpose of this study is to clarify the shape of the ligamentum flavum seen ventrally, and to obtain anatomic findings related to nerve root compression. The subjects were 18 adult embalmed cadavers, with an average age of 78 years at the time of death. The ventral shapes of the ligamentum fl

Association of the absence of palmaris longus tendon with an anomalous superficial palmar arch in the human hand.

The normal arterial supply to the human hand is via the ulnar and radial arteries which unite mid-palm to form a complete arch called the superficial palmar arch (SPA). From the SPA blood vessels pass anteriorly to supply the thumb and digits, and deeply to complete the deep palmar arch. Previous reports have documented anomalies of the SPA formation, and this may change the normal blood distribution to the thumb and the digits. There have also been reports of the absence of the palmaris longus tendon. A total of 47 embalmed cadaveric hands (some paired, some single) were dissected and the pre

Microanatomy of the pericallosal arterial complex.

OBJECT: The pericallosal arterial complex supplies the callosal and pericallosal regions, as well as the anterior two thirds of the medial and superomedial aspects of both hemispheres. It is composed of the pericallosal artery (that is, the segment of the anterior cerebral artery located distal to the anterior communicating artery [ACoA]) and the median callosal artery (or third pericallosal artery), which originates from the ACoA. This system was studied in 46 specimens (23 human cadaver heads) injected with colored latex. METHODS: After being injected with colored latex, embalmed, and bleac

Meningovertebral ligaments and their putative significance in low back pain.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the presence and morphology of the meningovertebral ligaments (ligaments of Hofmann) as well as postulate their possible contribution to low back pain. DESIGN: Sagittal dissections were performed on 12 embalmed cadaver specimens including the L5/S1 intervertebral level cephalad to T1. Meningovertebral ligaments were labeled and documented in both the lumbar and thoracic regions. RESULTS: Meningovertebral ligaments were found in both the lumbar and thoracic regions of all cadaveric specimens. These ligaments were much more prevalent in the lumbar vertebral column but w

Julia Pastrana, the nondescript: an example of congenital, generalized hypertrichosis terminalis with gingival hyperplasia.

Julia Pastrana (1834-1860) has gained immortality as one of the most extreme cases of generalized hypertrichosis upon record. When she was exhibited for money in the United States and Europe during the years 1855-1860, people thronged to see her, and she was several times described in the medical press of the day. After Julia Pastrana's death in childbirth, her corpse was embalmed in a very life-like manner, and exhibited all over Europe for several decades. Later, the mummy was believed to be lost, but in 1990 it was discovered at the Oslo Forensic Institute. Some writers have included Julia

Visualizing the human olfactory projection and ancillary structures in a 3D reconstruction.

Visualizing in 3D the histological microanatomy of the human olfactory projection from the olfactory mucosa in the nasal cavity to the olfactory bulbs in the cranial cavity necessitates a workflow for handling a great many sections. Here, we assembled a 3D reconstruction of a 7.45 cm3 en-bloc specimen extracted from an embalmed human cadaver. A series of 10 µm coronal sections was stained with quadruple fluorescence histology and scanned in four channels. A trained anatomist manually segmented six structures of interest in a subset of the sections to generate the ground truth. Six convolutiona

Visualization of injectate spread of intercostal nerve block: a cadaveric study.

INTRODUCTION: Intercostal nerve block and neurolysis are widely used procedures, but their injectate spread has not been well understood. Previous studies have reported unexpected outcomes (paravertebral or epidural anesthesia) and spinal cord injury after intercostal nerve block and neurolysis. To investigate a possible mechanism for these complications, we aimed to visualize the flow of liquid injected near the intercostal nerve, using cadavers. METHODS: We performed a simulated intercostal nerve block study using two Thiel-embalmed cadavers. Dye was injected into the interfascial plane bet

Thoracic paravertebral spread using two different ultrasound-guided intercostal injection techniques in human cadavers.

The continuity between the intercostal and paravertebral space has been established by several studies. In this study, the paravertebral spread of a colored dye was attempted with two different ultrasound-guided techniques. The posterior area of the trunk was scanned with a linear probe between the level of the fifth and the seventh thoracic vertebrae in eleven embalmed human cadavers. In the first technique, the probe was placed transversely below the inferior margin of the rib, and a needle was inserted between the internal intercostal membrane and the pleura. In the second technique, the pr

Laparoscopic nerve-sparing transperitoneal approach for endometriosis infiltrating the pelvic wall and somatic nerves: anatomical considerations and surgical technique.

PURPOSE: Endometriotic or fibrotic involvement of sacral plexus and pudendal and sciatic nerves may be quite frequently the endopelvic cause of ano-genital and pelvic pain. Feasibility of a laparoscopic transperitoneal approach to the somatic nerves of the pelvis was determined and showed by Possover et al. for diagnosis and treatment of ano-genital pain caused by pudendal and/or sacral nerve roots lesions and adopted at our institution. In this paper we report our experience and anatomo-surgical consideration regarding this technique. METHODS: Confidence with this technique was obtained afte

The potential complications of open carpal tunnel release surgery to the ulnar neurovascular bundle and its branches: A cadaveric study.

This study investigated the ulnar artery and the ulnar nerve and its branches in the palm to assess how frequently they may be at risk of damage during open carpal tunnel release surgery. Twenty-one formalin-embalmed cadaveric hands were dissected, and the proximity of the ulnar neurovascular bundle to two different lines of incision, the 3rd and 4th interdigital web space axis and the ring finger axis, was assessed and compared. It was found that an incision in the latter (ring finger) axis put the ulnar artery at risk in 12 of 21 specimens, whereas an incision in the former axis (3rd/4th int

Strain and excursion of the sciatic, tibial, and plantar nerves during a modified straight leg raising test.

A modified straight leg raising (SLR) in which ankle dorsiflexion is performed before hip flexion has been suggested to diagnose distal neuropathies such as tarsal tunnel syndrome. This study evaluates the clinical hypothesis that strain in the nerves around the ankle and foot caused by ankle dorsiflexion can be further increased with hip flexion. Linear displacement transducers were inserted into the sciatic, tibial, and plantar nerves and plantar fascia of eight embalmed cadavers to measure strain during the modified SLR. Nerve excursion was measured with a digital calliper. Ankle dorsiflexi

Suture-endobutton fixation of ankle tibio-fibular diastasis: a cadaver study.

Suture-Endobutton fixation is proposed as a minimally invasive, flexible fixation of ankle tibio-fibular diastasis, which would not require routine removal. This study tested the Suture-Endobutton construct in a cadaver syndesmosis injury model and compared this against A.O. syndesmosis screw fixation. Sixteen embalmed cadaver legs were used. Phase one consisted of placing the leg in a jig, generating an external rotation torque and measuring diastasis with increasing intraosseous membrane division. Phase two then compared the Suture-Endobutton construct vs. single four-cortex 4.5 mm A.O. scre
