Bilateral double axillary artery: embryological basis and clinical implications.

An unusual bilateral variation in the arterial pattern of the axilla was observed in an embalmed cadaver. Each axilla contained two axillary arteries of similar origins but different patterns of branching and fate. The first part of each axillary artery was a single vessel as is the norm. It gave off a supreme thoracic artery and then bifurcated into two medium-sized arteries hence referred to as regular and variant. The variant artery ran in an antero-medial course, partly covered by the one axillary vein. The regular artery gave off the thoracoacromial and two posterior branches from its sec

Fetal internal iliac artery: case report and embryologic review.

A 25-year-old woman with anomalous circulation to the right leg was seen with a symptomatic aneurysm of the abnormal vessel. The artery, which did share some features of the classic persistent sciatic artery, also had important differences that were not previously described in the literature. The patient manifested several associated vascular and nonvascular congenital anomalies. She underwent resection of the aneurysm and primary operative repair of the artery without difficulty. An embryologic interpretation is offered, and the clinical implications and management strategy are discussed.

Embryological basis of some aspects of cerebral vascular fistulas and malformations.

The literature on the formation of cerebral veins is reviewed to obtain a better understanding of some cerebrovascular anomalies. Clinical observations such as the entry of the superior ophthalmic vein into the cavernous sinus through the inferior rather than the superior orbital fissure, the relative infrequency of middle cerebral vein backflow in the presence of an extensive cavernous fistula, and the relative infrequency of hemorrhage in relation to the inferior petrosal fistula all relate to the persistence of an older venous pathway. The frequent occurrence of hemorrhage in association wi

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection of the brain: imaging analysis and embryologic considerations.

PURPOSE: To analyze the cortical gyral patterns and myelination patterns in a series of patients with congenital cytomegalovirus infections involving the central nervous system, to correlate them with known developmental events, and to develop a consistent theory regarding their embryogenesis. METHODS: The MR (11 patients) and CT (four patients) studies of 11 patients with congenital cytomegalovirus infections involving the brain were retrospectively reviewed. Analysis was made of myelination patterns, cortical gyral patterns, other areas of maldeveloped brain, and focal brain lesions. RESUL

A review of the morphology of spinal cord malformations and their relation to neuro-embryology.

Morphological characteristics of spinal dysrhaphic disorders are briefly described. In addition, attention is focused on an anomaly of the spinal tracts (ascending and descending pathways). Neuro-embryological considerations facilitate greatly the understanding of the pathogenesis of these conditions.

Anterior capsular redundancy of the shoulder: congenital or traumatic? An embryological study.

A study of the attachment of the joint capsule to the scapula, and of the shape of the humeral head, has been carried out in 52 fetal and embryonic shoulders. In 77% of cases the anterior capsule was attached to the labrum or close to it; in the remaining 23% it was inserted into the neck of the scapula, so creating a pouch. In all 52 specimens the humeral head was spherical. It was concluded that the pouched and redundant anterior capsule sometimes seen during surgery for recurrent dislocation of the shoulder, may not be traumatic in origin, but could be a developmental variant.

[Embryologic study of the lacrimal ducts in man. Apropos of 10 cases].

The embryology of the human lacrimal system is not clearly defined in the literature and two hypotheses exist: the first suggests that the origin of the lacrimal system is from an ectodermal fold forming a sulcus of the naso-optic fissure. The second, with few defenders, describes the first rod of cells as meeting a second one which appears to emerge from the primitive nasal cavity. A study of ten human embryos, aged from 14 to 25 weeks and with a length of 12 to 33 cm, examined by histologic sections of 10 microns, revealed no lacrimal origin in the primitive nasal cavity near the inferior me…

Mesodermomas: a new embryological approach to primary tumours of coelomic surfaces.

It appears that the so-called mesothelium lining the serous cavities is in fact mesoderm, with an epithelial-like arrangement which persists in the post-embryological stage. Cellular variability of primary tumours of serous surfaces can be explained on this developmental evidence. The term mesodermoma seems to be justified to define neoplasms arising from undifferentiated and multipotential mesoderm which, in neoplastic disease, exhibits a wide range of differential activity and gives rise to tumours with prevailing myoblastic, angioblastic, lymphoblastic, chondroblastic, osteoblastic, fibrobl

[Odontostomatogenic focal disease; embryologic and clinical causes of autoimmune pathogenesis].

The autoimmune pathogenesis of the focal odontostomatogenous disease is investigated and emphasis is laid on the different keys of interpretation: at embryologic, clinic and immunologic level. A special attention is paid to the primary meaning of structured or non structured lymphoid tissue of oropharynx, on account of embryologic identity with thymus and bursa of Fabricius, differentiating into sectors of ecto-entodermic stratification. The clinical evidence of the bursa-equivalent significance of Waldeyer ring, appears to lie in the ascertainment of the tonsillar atrophy in course of agammag

[Deformities of the spine and ribs in embryologically related malformations of the heart with cyanosis].

Three cases of severe costovertebral deformities together with embryologically related cardiac malformations (Fallots Tetralogy and Truncus arteriosus communis) are presented. Two patients died because of their thoracic deformities and limited respiratory function. Relationships to similar bizarre veretebral anomalies are discussed. The cause is probably a teratogenic agent, acting between the fifth to eight embryologic week.

Embryology of the lower limb demonstrates that congenital absent fibula is a radiologic misnomer.

The congenitally shortened limb (CSL) with fibular deficiency or absence has historically been graded by plain radiography, while associated cartilaginous and arterial soft tissue anomalies have been comparatively neglected. Consistent pathological evidence of remnant cartilaginous bodies in place of the fibula presupposes earlier existence of a preformed cartilaginous template of the fibula. In complete fibular radiographic absences, often associated with midline metatarsal deficiencies, the two usual nutrient arteries to the fibula fail to form, as they normally would have, around the (16-18
