Child Maltreatment Education: Utilizing an Escape Room Activity to Engage Learners on a Sensitive Topic.

AUDIENCE: Emergency medical service (EMS) providers and other health care professionals. INTRODUCTION: In 2019 alone, 656,000 children in the United States were victims of child abuse and neglect.1 The medical community has historically struggled with the identification of child maltreatment. In one study, 33% of abused children had a previous visit with a medical provider in which the abuse was found to have been missed.2 Many voices in the healthcare community have advocated for the implementation of routine screening, and studies have demonstrated the implementation of such screening in th

Crash Telemetry-Based Injury Severity Prediction is Equivalent to or Out-Performs Field Protocols in Triage of Planar Vehicle Collisions.

INTRODUCTION: With the increasing availability of vehicle telemetry technology, there is great potential for Advanced Automatic Collision Notification (AACN) systems to improve trauma outcomes by detecting patients at-risk for severe injury and facilitating early transport to trauma centers. METHODS: National Automotive Sampling System Crashworthiness Data System (NASS-CDS) data from 1999-2013 were used to construct a logistic regression model (injury severity prediction [ISP] model) predicting the probability that one or more occupants in planar, non-rollover motor vehicle collisions (MVCs)

Healthcare utilization in older patients using personal emergency response systems: an analysis of electronic health records and medical alert data : Brief Description: A Longitudinal Retrospective Analyses of healthcare utilization rates in older patients using Personal Emergency Response Systems from 2011 to 2015.

BACKGROUND: Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS) are traditionally used as fall alert systems for older adults, a population that contributes an overwhelming proportion of healthcare costs in the United States. Previous studies focused mainly on qualitative evaluations of PERS without a longitudinal quantitative evaluation of healthcare utilization in users. To address this gap and better understand the needs of older patients on PERS, we analyzed longitudinal healthcare utilization trends in patients using PERS through the home care management service of a large healthcare organization.

Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest: Public-Access Defibrillation and System Approaches to Minimize Avoidable Delay.

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains a leading cause of sudden death worldwide, with wide variation in reported incidence and outcomes driven by heterogeneity in registries, emergency medical services (EMS) organization, and case definitions. Despite substantial advances in resuscitation systems, survival after EMS-treated OHCA generally remains below 10%, and outcomes are critically time dependent. Delays in emergency call activation, bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and-most importantly-early defibrillation are associated with a rapid decline in return of spontaneous c

Harm Reduction in the Field: First Responders' Perceptions of Opioid Overdose Interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Recent policy changes in Washington State presented a unique opportunity to pair evidence-based interventions with first responder services to combat increasing opioid overdoses. However, little is known about how these interventions should be implemented. In partnership with the Research with Expert Advisors on Drug Use team, a group of academically trained and community-trained researchers with lived and living experience of substance use, we examined facilitators and barriers to adopting leave-behind naloxone, field-based buprenorphine initiation, and HIV and hepatitis C virus

Emerging and re-emerging Infectious diseases: a global health threat.

The HIV/AIDS pandemic can truly be described as an infectious disease that has recently emerged and judging from its rapid global spread, it leaves no doubt that it is one of the greatest health threats mankind has to contend with. This pandemic has alerted and stimulated the international scientific community to seriously reflect oa other recent episodes of emerging and re-emerging infections. The examples that have recently been observed and addressed include new emerging infectious diseases, unusual manifestations of previously known diseases and unusual eruption of known diseases in unusua

Misplaced endotracheal tubes by paramedics in an urban emergency medical services system.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of unrecognized, misplaced endotracheal tubes inserted by paramedics in a large urban, decentralized emergency medical services (EMS) system. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, observational study of patients intubated in the field by paramedics before emergency department arrival. During an 8-month period, emergency physicians assessed tube position at ED arrival using a combination of auscultation, end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO(2)) monitoring, and direct laryngoscopy. RESULTS: A total of 108 intubated patients were studied. On arrival in the E

Chronic wound care delivery in wound clinics, community nursing and residential aged care settings: A qualitative analysis using Levine's Conservation Model.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore patient experience of chronic wound care across diverse models of outpatient wound care delivery. BACKGROUND: Chronic wounds represent a significant personal, family and healthcare system burden. Evidence suggests specialist wound clinics are more effective and less expensive, however, most outpatient wound care is delivered by general community nurses. There is little understanding of how patients experience diverse models of wound care delivery and the subsequent impact on their capacity to adapt to imbalances in their internal/external environment. DESIGN:

The Development of Health Services in Turkey and the Effects of the Pandemic.

The concept of social security is used to describe the protection mechanisms created at the social level against future partial-risk situations. Turkey's ability to maintain good health outcomes depends on its strong health insurance system. At this point, the new health system will focus more on individual and social protection and will try to keep service use at a more acceptable level. To ensure that the system is sustainable, it is essential to create different coverage packages in line with income and desires within the scope of the Social Security Agency (SSA) and for individuals to act

Branching-scenario games in acute end-of-life care education: cultural adaptation and health equity from a public health implementation perspective.

The quality and accessibility of end-of-life (EOL) care are sensitive indicators of health equity, yet these services remain profoundly unequal worldwide. The challenge is especially acute in emergency and critical care, where clinicians must reconcile time-pressured medical decisions with emotionally charged communication. Branching-scenario games, serious games built on clinical decision trees, have emerged as a promising educational tool for rehearsing such competencies in a safe, repeatable virtual environment. However, their effectiveness is not a matter of simple technology transfer: it

Building bridges to outpatient treatment services for post-overdose care via paramedic buprenorphine field initiation.

INTRODUCTION: Despite sustained efforts to reduce opioid-related overdose fatalities, rates have continued to rise. In many areas, overdose response involves emergency medical service (EMS) personnel administering naloxone and transporting patients to the emergency department (ED). However, a substantial number of patients decline transport, and many EDs do not provide medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD). One approach to filling this gap involves delivering MOUD to overdose patients in the field with trained post-overdose EMS teams who can initiate buprenorphine. In this MOUD field initi

Reimagining Dementia Care: A Complex Intervention Systematic Review on Optimising Social Prescribing (SP) for People Living With Dementia (PLWD) in the United Kingdom.

INTRODUCTION: Dementia is a complex medical condition that poses significant challenges to healthcare systems and support services. People living with dementia (PLWD) often face complex needs, exacerbated by social isolation and difficulty accessing support. Social prescribing (SP) has been increasingly integrated into the United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) as a means to connect individuals with non-clinical services to address these challenges. However, current research provides limited detail on specific SP interventions tailored to dementia care, leaving gaps in understanding th

Implementation of COVID-19 vaccination services in prison in six European countries: translating emergency intervention into routine life-course vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Evidence has shown that the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is much higher in prisons than in the community. The release of the COVID-19 vaccine and the recommendation by WHO to include prisons among priority settings have led to the inclusion of prisons in national COVID-19 vaccination strategies. Evidence on prison health and healthcare services provision is limited and often focuses on a single country or institution due to the multiple challenges of conducting research in prison settings. The present study was done in the framework of the EU-founded project RISE-Vac. It aime

A country-wide survey of knowledge and practice regarding prevention, snake identification and pre-hospital management of children with snakebites amongst Public Health Midwives in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Snake envenoming remains a major public health problem in Sri Lanka, disproportionately affecting rural children. Timely and appropriate pre-hospital management is crucial to reducing morbidity and mortality. Public Health Midwives (PHMs), as frontline community health workers, are strategically positioned to contribute to snakebite prevention and early management. However, their knowledge and confidence regarding paediatric snakebite care have not been systematically evaluated. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A cross-sectional, country-wide survey was conducted among PHMs across

A Mixed-Methods Study to Evaluate Family Planning Desires and Barriers to Building Families Among Gay, Bisexual, and Lesbian Cisgender Military Service Members.

INTRODUCTION: Barriers to seeking infertility care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, and asexual (LGBTIQA+) individuals are well documented in the literature. However, little is known about military LGBTIQA+ service members seeking infertility care within the Military Health System. Approximately 6.1% of active duty U.S. service members across all branches identify as LGBTIQA+, which underscores the need for a deeper understanding of the needs of this community to support and retain service members. We therefore sought to describe the lived experiences of le
