Emotion regulation in bipolar disorder type I: an fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder type I (BD-I) is associated with emotion dysregulation. However, experimentally controlled studies of emotion regulation (ER), particularly those examining the brain correlates of the putative deficits, are scarce and their results inconsistent. METHOD: Nineteen euthymic BD-I patients and 17 healthy controls (HC) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while performing a visual ER 2 × 2 factorial task, with instruction (Look or Decrease) and valence (Negative or Neutral) as within-subject factors. Emotional ratings were collected after each picture present

Cognitive emotion regulation strategies in outpatients with major depressive disorder.

The aim of this study was to examine cognitive emotion regulation strategies in adult outpatients with major depressive disorder (MDD). A clinical sample of 191 MDD outpatients and a non-clinical sample of 267 general adults were recruited. Nine cognitive emotion regulation strategies were assessed in all participants (aged 21-65 years). Results showed that MDD participants had significantly higher scores on the following strategies: self-blame, acceptance, rumination, catastrophizing, and blaming others, but lower scores on positive refocusing, refocus on planning, positive reappraisal, and p

Attentional control, attentional network functioning, and emotion regulation styles.

Attentional network functioning in emotionally neutral conditions and self-reported attentional control (AC) were analysed as predictors of the tendency to engage in dysfunctional emotion regulation strategies. Diminished attentional orienting predicted an increased tendency to engage in brooding rumination, and enhanced alertness predicted a greater chance of suppression, beyond trait anxiety and self-reported AC, which were not predictive of either rumination or suppression. This is the first study to show that some forms of dysfunctional emotion regulation are related to the attentional net

The role of emotional control in the regulation of mood in parents of children with mucopolysaccharidosis.

The aim of our study was to evaluate whether, on the basis of variables related to emotional control, we can anticipate mood change in parents of chronically ill children. Fifty-four parents of children with diagnosed mucopolysaccharidosis participated in the study that was carried out during a rehabilitation programme for children with rare metabolic diseases. To assess emotional control, a Polish adaptation of the Courtauld Emotional Control Scale was used, and mood was measured with the UWIST Mood Adjective Checklist (UMACL). Mood was assessed twice, at an interval of 8 days, on the dimensi

[Psychometric properties of the Hungarian version of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire].

OBJECTIVE: The Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ) measures conscious attentional and thinking processes that people often use to regulate their emotions. The English version of the CERQ - consisting of nine subscales: self-blame, rumination, catastrophizing, other blame, acceptance, positive refocusing, planning, positive reappraisal and putting into perspective - showed excellent psychometric properties in previous investigations and is widely used in current research and clinical practice. The present study describes the psychometric properties of the Hungarian version of the

Emotion regulation and internalizing symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorders.

The aim of this study was to examine the unique contribution of two aspects of emotion regulation (awareness and coping) to the development of internalizing problems in 11-year-old high-functioning children with an autism spectrum disorder (HFASD) and a control group, and the moderating effect of group membership on this. The results revealed overlap between the two groups, but also significant differences, suggesting a more fragmented emotion regulation pattern in children with HFASD, especially related to worry and rumination. Moreover, in children with HFASD, symptoms of depression were unr

The regulating role of negative emotions in children's coping with peer rejection.

This study examined the role of emotions as predictors of children's coping responses to peer rejection experiences. Children ages 7-12 (N = 79) completed questionnaires to assess emotional and coping responses to peer rejection scenarios. This study examined three coping factors specific to peer rejection (positive reappraisal, ruminative coping, and aggressive coping) and examined results separately for two negative peer experiences (teasing and exclusion). Children's emotions predicted coping responses after controlling for peer experiences. Specifically, anger was associated with aggressiv

Emotion-related self-regulation and its relation to children's maladjustment.

The development of children's emotion-related self-regulation appears to be related to, and likely involved in, many aspects of children's development. In this review, the distinction between effortful self-regulatory processes and those that are somewhat less voluntary is discussed, and literature on the former capacities is reviewed. Emotion-related self-regulation develops rapidly in the early years of life and improves more slowly into adulthood. Individual differences in children's self-regulation are fairly stable after the first year or two of life. Such individual differences are inver

Both mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid receptors regulate emotional memory in mice.

Corticosteroid hormones are thought to promote optimal behavioral adaptation under fearful conditions, primarily via glucocorticoid receptors (GRs). Here, we examined - using pharmacological and genetic approaches in mice - if mineralocorticoid receptors (MRs) also play a role in fearful memory formation. As expected, administration of the GR-antagonist RU38486 prior to training in a fear conditioning paradigm impaired contextual memory when tested 24 (but not when tested 3) h after training. Tone-cue memory was enhanced by RU38486 when tested at 4 (but not 25) h after training. Interestingly,

The cerebellum in emotion regulation: a repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

Several lines of evidence suggest that the cerebellum may play a role in the regulation of emotion. The aim of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that inhibition of cerebellar function using slow repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) would lead to increased negative mood as a result of impaired emotion regulation. In a randomized counterbalanced within-subjects design, 12 healthy young right-handed volunteers received 20 min of cerebellar, occipital, or sham 1 Hz rTMS on three separate days. Mood state inventories were acquired prior to and immediately after rTMS and af

Emotion regulation in spider phobia: role of the medial prefrontal cortex.

Phobic responses are strong emotional reactions towards phobic objects, which can be described as a deficit in the automatic regulation of emotions. Difficulties in the voluntary cognitive control of these emotions suggest a further phobia-specific deficit in effortful emotion regulation mechanisms. The actual study is based on this emotion regulation conceptualization of specific phobias. The aim is to investigate the neural correlates of these two emotion regulation deficits in spider phobics. Sixteen spider phobic females participated in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study

Difficulties in emotion regulation and impulse control during cocaine abstinence.

RATIONALE: Prior research has shown that cocaine dependence is associated with dysfunction of brain systems involved in emotions and motivational states. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether difficulties in emotion regulation are associated with early cocaine abstinence using the recently validated Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). METHOD: Recently abstinent treatment-seeking cocaine patients (n=60) completed the DERS during their first week of inpatient treatment and at discharge (3-4 weeks later), and scores were compared with community controls (n=50). RESULTS: Compared with con

Emotion regulation and trichotillomania: a comparison of clinical and nonclinical hair pulling.

This study investigated the emotion regulation hypothesis of trichotillomania (TTM) using a retrospective self-report measure and an experimental hair-pulling task. Participants diagnosed with TTM (n=34) and nonclinical control (NC) volunteers (n=32) were compared on ratings of emotional experiences associated with hair pulling. Data from the retrospective self-report measure supported the emotion regulation hypothesis of TTM. The TTM group reported larger decreases than the NC participants in boredom, sadness, anger, and tension, and larger increases in relief and calm from before to during p

What Is Maladaptive in the Emotion Regulation of Personality Pathology? Investigating the Regulation Patterns of Pathological Personality Profiles.

INTRODUCTION: Maladaptive personality traits are viewed as risk factors for personality pathology and are predictive of poor psychological and interpersonal functioning. The study of pathological personality traits has gained increasing popularity, but our knowledge on their association with emotion regulation (ER) processes is limited. METHODS: The present cross-sectional study investigated how pathological profiles relate to the regular and contextual selection and subjective effectiveness of a variety of ER strategies based on the Process Model and the Cognitive ER Questionnaire. Emotion regulation and high social anxiety: spontaneous and instructed use of cognitive reappraisal to regulate anger.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Individuals with Social Anxiety Disorder and those high in social anxiety (HSA) experience greater anger difficulties compared to those with low social anxiety (LSA). METHODS: This study examined trait and state anger in individuals with HSA (n = 46) and LSA (n = 45). The study also explored group differences in state and trait cognitive reappraisal and the effectiveness of instructed cognitive reappraisal to regulate state anger among participants with HSA and LSA in response to films containing rejection-salient content. RESULTS: Participants with HSA, relative t

The relationship between mindfulness and athletes' mental skills may be explained by emotion regulation and self-regulation.

BACKGROUND: Although numerous psychological determinants of sports success have been identified in the scientific literature, research on the contribution of mindfulness and interoceptive awareness to sports achievements remains limited. This study investigates the relationship between self-reported mental skills determining sports success (i.e., flow state, attention, technique, sensitivity to error, commitment, and achievement), state mindfulness for physical activity (of the mind and the body), and interoceptive awareness (including scales of noticing, not distracting, not worrying, attenti

The Emotion Regulation Flexibility Questionnaire: A Rasch-Validated Version for Children.

The ability to effectively use different emotion regulation (ER) strategies across situations-i.e., ER flexibility (ERF)-plays a key role in emotional intelligence and social functioning. However, it has rarely been studied in young people, partly due to the lack of age-appropriate measurement instruments. This study investigated children's perceptions of ERF by adapting an adult scale and proposing the 10-item Emotion Regulation Flexibility Questionnaire for Children (ERFQ-C). A sample of 346 children aged 9-12 years was recruited, who completed the ERFQ-C along with questionnaires assessing

Parental Accommodation and Pediatric Anxiety: Moderating Effect of Emotion Regulation.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common and distressing psychiatric conditions among youth. Child anxiety symptoms are impacted by a variety of factors, including parenting practices. Parental accommodation (i.e., a parent modifying their routine or facilitating avoidance to alleviate their child's anxiety) is one of the most well-established parenting practices thought to maintain anxiety in youth. Scant research, however, has explored how child emotion regulation impacts this relationship. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate whether parent-reported child emotion regulation m

The impact of mindfulness intervention on emotion regulation in athletes: a meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Athletes frequently encounter considerable emotional challenges during high-intensity training and competition. Effective emotion regulation is essential not only for athletic performance but also for long-term mental health and career longevity. Although mindfulness interventions have been increasingly applied in sport psychology, their effects on athletes' emotion regulation have not been comprehensively evaluated. This meta-analysis therefore examined the effects of mindfulness interventions on emotion regulation among athletes. METHODS: Seven eligible studies involving 273 p

Disordered Personality Dimensions and Emotion Regulation Among Older Adults.

Disordered personality traits are frequently defined with respect to emotion dysregulation. However, research has needed to explore connections between disordered personality traits and emotion regulation strategies, particularly in older adulthood. The current study had older adult participants (n = 210; mean age: 66 years) complete measures of disordered personality traits, emotion regulation strategies, and difficulties in emotion regulation. Results demonstrated that disordered personality traits were more robustly associated with difficulties with emotion regulation relative to strategy u
