Imaging endocrinology in animal models of endocrine disease.

Endocrine organs secrete a variety of hormones involved in the regulation of a multitude of body functions. Although pancreatic islets were discovered at the turn of the 19th century, other endocrine glands remained commonly described as diffuse endocrine systems. Over the last two decades, development of new imaging techniques and genetically-modified animals with cell-specific fluorescent tags or specific hormone deficiencies have enabled in vivo imaging of endocrine organs and revealed intricate endocrine cell network structures and plasticity. Overall, these new tools have revolutionized o…

[The clinical value of contrast-less mammography in endocrine diseases].

The authors analyze the X-ray picture of the changes occurring in the mammary glands in women with various endocrine diseases and in men with gynecomastia. Contrastless mammagraphy was carried out in 189 persons. In studying the mammagrams in patients with endocrine diseases assessment was made of the state of the subcutaneous-adipose cellular tissue, total dimensions of the organ. The majority of the endocrine diseases were accompanied at the initial stages of their development by changes in the endocrine gland, this serving as a direct indication for the use of contrastless roentgenography f

[The unbearable versatility of endocrine aging].

Ageing is multifactorial, genetically and epigenetically programmed biological process. Nowadays ageing is acknowledged as extremely actual scientifical, social and demographical problem. Despite the evidence of interactions between ageing and accumulation of endocrine disruptions, the last 150 years of variegated searches for potential endocrine "elixir of lon gevity" brought contradictive, mutually exclusive and even discouraging results. Fortunately, the discovery of referent lab oratory intervals of hormonal blood levels among elderly people improved the overall situation. Traditional trea

[Endocrine oncology : An update on surgical treatments].

BACKGROUND: In the management of solid tumours, routine concepts are increasingly being transformed into individualized patient treatment. Endocrine surgery is traditionally characterized by resection strategies that are adapted to phenotype and genotype of the underlying disease. As complication rates in surgery correlate with the extent of resection, continuous efforts are made to identify selection criteria in order to limit the extent of surgery without compromising the oncological outcome. The aim is to design risk-stratified precision endocrine surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search w

Endocrine dysregulation in COVID-19: molecular mechanisms and insights.

This review describes the impact of COVID-19 on the endocrine system, focusing on cortisol signaling and growth factor-induced endocrine resistance. As expected, SARS-CoV-2 infection induces systemic inflammation, resulting in stimulation of the adrenal glands leading to elevated cortisol levels with normal adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) levels. The cytokine storm could also stimulate cortisol production. However, in some instances, cortisol levels rise independently of ACTH due to a phenomenon known as "pseudo-Cushing's syndrome," where adrenal glands become less responsive to ACTH. Plasm

Gastric PDX-1 expression in pancreatic metaplasia and endocrine cell hyperplasia in atrophic corpus gastritis.

The homeodomain transcription factor PDX-1 plays a key role in endocrine and exocrine differentiation processes of the pancreas. PDX-1 is also essential for differentiation of endocrine cells in the gastric antrum. The role of PDX-1 in the pathogenesis of endocrine cell hyperplasia and pancreatic metaplasia in corpus and fundus gastritis has not been evaluated. By immunohistochemistry and double-immunofluorescence, we investigated the expression of PDX-1 in 10 tissue specimens with normal human gastric mucosa, nonatrophic and atrophic gastritis and in pancreatic metaplasia, respectively. In no

Contributions of fluorescence to endocrine surgery.

The use of fluorescence in surgery has expanded and become widespread in recent years, which has led to a real technological phenomenon with the emergence of devices adapted for use in laparoscopic and robotic approaches. Fluorescence-guided surgery in the field of endocrine surgery is also on the rise. More and more articles describe its use in surgery of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands, although the series are still modest in size and protocols have not been standardized. There are currently several developing areas for the application of fluorescence in endocrine surgery, includ

Tamoxifen: 28-day oral toxicity study in the rat based on the Enhanced OECD Test Guideline 407 to detect endocrine effects.

The main objective of this 28-day oral gavage toxicity study in the rat was to investigate which of the current and/or additional parameters of the OECD Test Guideline 407 would reliably and sensitively detect the endocrine-mediated effects of the nonsteroidal antiestrogen tamoxifen. In addition, as this study was performed using two subgroups of five animals of each sex run concurrently, it enabled an assessment of the intralaboratory reproducibility while also assessing the potential value of using ten animals of each sex per group instead of using the standard five animals of each sex per g

[Endocrine tumors: clinical overview].

The term endocrine tumor incorporates all neoplasms which originate from the various endocrine organs. Endocrine tumors can be characterized by different criteria: localization, endocrine function, dignity (i.e. tumorigenesis, sporadic or hereditary). These characteristics also determine the clinical outcome. The clinical history, symptoms and physical examination findings (e.g. amenorrhea, skin alterations, striae, virilization, increased blood pressure and flush) direct the diagnostic process of functioning endocrine tumors. Laboratory findings (endocrine parameters) are needed to establish

Asymmetries of Left and Right Adrenal Glands in Neural Innervation and Glucocorticoids Production.

The adrenal gland is paired peripheral end organs of the neuroendocrine system and is responsible for producing crucial stress hormones from its two functional compartments, the adrenal cortex, and the adrenal medulla under stimuli. Left-right asymmetry in vertebrates exists from the central nervous system to peripheral paired endocrine glands. The sided difference in the cerebral cortex is extensively investigated, while the knowledge of asymmetry of paired endocrine glands is still poor. The present study aims to investigate the asymmetries of bilateral adrenal glands, which play important r…

Endocrine disruption in crustaceans due to pollutants: a review.

The main endocrine-regulated processes of crustaceans have been reviewed in relation to the effects of endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs). Molting has been shown to be inhibited by several organic pollutants, such as xenoestrogens and related compounds, as well as by some pesticides. Most of these disrupters are thought to interfere with ecdysone at target tissues, although only for a few has this action been demonstrated in vitro. The heavy metal cadmium appears to inhibit some ecdysone secretion. Juvenoid compounds have also been shown to inhibit molting, likely by interfering with the st

Endocrine consequences of cranial irradiation in children: Mechanisms, impacts, and sex differences.

Cranial irradiation is a vital adjunctive therapy for pediatric brain tumors and acute lymphoblastic leukemia, significantly improving survival outcomes. However, it is often associated with complications, including neurodevelopmental disorders, endocrine dysfunctions, and obesity. This review explores the endocrine complications linked to cranial irradiation, focusing on its impact on the pituitary gland, hypothalamus, salivary glands, and thyroid gland. We discuss how radiation-induced hormonal imbalances contribute to growth restriction, obesity, and reproductive dysfunctions, with an empha

Management of a multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 during pregnancy: A case report and review of the literature.

Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1 (MEN1) or Wermer's syndrome is a rare hereditary endocrine syndrome with high penetrance caused by mutations in MEN1 tumor suppressor gene. MEN1 is characterized by hyperplasia or tumoral enlargement in a number of endocrine organs (parathyroid glands, pancreas, pituitary gland, adrenal gland) and it could be hormonally active or inactive. MEN1 is a significant cause of morbidity due to hormone secretion and mass effect. Since it is a rare condition, there are no guidelines with respect to the follow-up of pregnant women with MEN1. Herein, we aimed to presen

A novel pathogenic variant in OFD1 results in X-linked Joubert syndrome with orofaciodigital features and pituitary aplasia.

Orofaciodigital syndrome type I and X-linked recessive Joubert syndrome are known ciliopathic disorders that are caused by pathogenic variants in OFD1 gene. Endocrine system involvement with these conditions is not well described. We present the first report of a newborn male with a novel hemizygous variant in OFD1 gene c.515T>C, (p.Leu172Pro) resulting in X-linked Joubert syndrome and orofaciodigital features with complete pituitary gland aplasia and subsequent severe hypoplasia of peripheral endocrine glands. This clinical report expands the phenotypic spectrum of endocrine system involvemen…

[Autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 2 associated with autoimmune hypophysitis and coeliac disease].

Autoimmune polyendocrine syndromes (APS) are organ-specific autoimmune disorders affecting multiple endocrine glands; these are gradually destroyed by action of autoantibodies. Similarly to other autoimmune diseases, the presence of certain genetic predisposition is an essential prerequisite to the disease development; polymorphism of the main histocompatible system (HLA in humans) appears to play the most important role. APS are categorized into four types, based on what combination of endocrine glands is affected. APS type 1, characterised by hypoparathyreosis, mucocutaneous candidiasis and …

Peptide hormone precursors, subunits, and fragments as human tumor markers.

Hormone-related peptides (HRPs) are more frequently and abundantly produced in ectopic hormone-secreting tumors than in tumors of the respective endocrine glands. Most HRPs may have little functional activity. Therefore, tumors producing even high amounts of HRPs are either clinically silent or produce minor endocrine symptoms. The potential use of HRPs as tumor markers has several limitations. The difference in production and secretion between the tumor tissues and the respective normal endocrine glands is usually only a quantitative one. In cancer patients, different patterns of structural h…

Endocrine hypertension: the role of imaging in diagnosis and management.

Endocrine hypertension is an uncommon but treatable cause of secondary hypertension. It results from excessive hormone production by the endocrine glands or due to ectopic hormone production. The causes of abnormal hormonal production can be congenital or acquired. Specific syndromes can also predispose to the development of endocrine hypertension. Extensive catecholamine production can occur due to pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs). Excessive aldosterone secretion by the adrenal cortex commonly occurs due to idiopathic (bilateral) adrenal hyperplasia or aldosterone-producing adrena…
