There is often the risk of confusing pollen grains with helminth eggs from archaeological sites. Thousands to millions of pollen grains can be recovered from archaeological burial sediments that represent past ritual, medication and environment. Some pollen grain types can be similar to parasite eggs. Such a confusion is represented by the diagnosis of enterobiasis in ancient Iran. The authors of this study confused a joint-pine (Ephedra spp.) pollen grain with a pinworm egg. This paper describes the specific Ephedra pollen morphology that can be confused with pinworm eggs.

Enterobius vermicularis, the pinworm, is one of the most prevalent intestinal parasites in the world. Ectopic infestations in the genital or urinary tracts rarely occur and chronic enterobiasis of the urinary tract has rarely been reported. Here we present such a case in a 7-year-old girl presenting with fever, pain in the abdomen, vomiting and burning micturition. Ultrasonography and micturating cystourethrogram (MCU) studies were normal. The ova were demonstrated from both the patient's urine and stool specimen. This child was treated successfully with Albendazole and Ivermectin.

In Ibadan, Nigeria, an Enterobius vermicularis worm was found in the urine of a soldier complaining of urethral irritation that had started 4 hours after coitus. After his first post-coital micturition, which yielded the worm, the irritation stopped. There was convincing evidence that the worm had entered the soldier's urethra from his partner's perianal region (rear-entry coital position, no ejaculation because of partner's complaint of painful coitus, the partner was a school girl of 15, enterobiasis is common in young school girls in the city, etc.).

A prevalence survey of Enterobius vermicularis in primary school students aged 6-10 years in Bang Plee district, Samut Prakarn Province, Thailand was undertaken from January to March 2000. There were 783 subjects, 395 males and 388 females. Diagnosis was done by transparent tape swab technique. It revealed that 1) worms were found in 38.82% of the students, 2) there was a correlation between prevalence of parasite infection and student sex and age and 3) family socio-economic background (income and occupation) had no relationship with the prevalence of the enterobiasis (p < 0.05).
