The aim of this study was to measure the levels of lactase, sucrase, maltase, leucine amino peptidase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase in duodenum of Indian patients with duodenal ulcer. The levels of arylsulfatases A and B, alpha-amylase, aspartate transcarbamylase, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase were investigated during the infection of mice with schistosoma mansoni. This infection caused a significant (p < 0.001) increase in the activity of hepatic arylsulfatase B (ASB), aspartate transcarbamylases and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase. A non-significant difference occurred for alpha-amylase (p < 0.3) and arylsulfatase A (p > 0.5) when compared to the control. The specific activity of hepatic ASB was progressively increased with the progression of the Schistosoma-infection.

Experiments were performed on laboratory rats with acute pancreatitis caused by local freezing the pancreas with chlorethyl. An active action of enzymes alpha-amilase, lipase, phospholipase A2, was revealed. During the first hours, an increase in action of all three enzymes, particularly that of phospholipase A2, was found. It was established that the lipid spectrum of pancreas had changed. It shows that cell membranes were destroyed. Experiments revealed an activating role of Ca2+ ions for all the enzymes and a correcting action of chlorpromasine.

UNLABELLED: Carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase deficiency is a rare and life-threatening mitochondrial fatty acid beta-oxidation disorder. We describe a patient who, despite a severe clinical course and an extremely low carnitine-acylcarnitine translocase activity, is currently alive and in good health. Genotoxicity of adriamycin in human cell lines was investigated by using a micronucleus assay. The result obtained was negative: the cells treated showed no increase in micronuclei. The chromosome aberration study with adriamycin indicated that the number of aberrant cells, high immediately after treatment, decreased to nearly the control level in 24 h of postincubation, probably as a result of the DNA repair process. The complete amino acid sequence of a factor V activator (VLFVA) is deduced from the nucleotide sequence of a cDNA encoding the enzyme. The cDNA was isolated by PCR screening a venomous gland cDNA library of Central Asian Vipera lebetina snake.
