We describe a large family, including 54 affected individuals, with multiple epiphyseal dysplasia (MED) with involvement of the peripheral joints only. In this family, a mutation in the COL9A2 gene was detected. Every affected person has involvement of the knee joints. Other involved joints are the elbow, ankle, wrist, hand, and feet joints. Of 823 pediatric hand fractures treated between 1981 through 1996, only 11 (1.3%) were Salter-Harris type III fractures of the proximal phalanx. We review the anatomic basis, etiology, age prevalence, treatment, and results of these epiphyseal injuries. The average age at injury was 14.9 years, with a narrow range from 14 years 2 months to 15 years 11 months. Nine of 11 fractures were displaced and treated with open reduction and internal fixation. We evaluated growth, maturity of the skeleton and formation of skeletal deformities and epiphysiolysis of the femoral head in 22 children with end-stage renal failure undergoing haemodialysis, CAPD (continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis) and after kidney transplantation. Seventy-seven hips in 61 patients (mean age, 13 years) with slipped capital femoral epiphysis treated with in situ pinning were retrospectively evaluated to determine the frequency and magnitude of epiphyseal growth after pinning. Threaded Steinmann pins, Knowles pins, and cannulated screws were used. The effect of stimulation with continuous small amounts (20 microA) of electric current on the distal epiphyseal plate of rabbit femurs was examined. In contrast to control animals 6 weeks after the operation 18 of the 20 experimental animals showed an increased lengthening or broadening of the femur on the operated side. In 14 cases the increased growth resulted in varus or valgus deformities.

Methylmethacrylate cement was used as a substitute for the epiphyseal bone of the canine proximal femora, after femoral neck osteotomy. Manganese deficiency in chickens results in perosis and a higher incidence of slipped tendon.
