Enamel Remineralizing Agents: State of the Art.

Dental caries remains the most prevalent chronic disease worldwide, yet early enamel lesions are reversible if managed with appropriate remineralizing agents. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on remineralizing agents, their mechanisms of action, and clinical applications, with a focus on dental materials used in preventive and minimally invasive dentistry. Traditional fluoride-based approaches enhance remineralization through fluorapatite formation; however, their effectiveness is limited when calcium and phosphate bioavailability is insufficient. Biomimetic agents, including

The Use of 3D-Printed Space Maintainers: Clinical Outcomes and Parental Satisfaction.

Space maintainers (SMs) have traditionally been the treatment of choice for preventing space loss following the premature loss of primary teeth. The advent of digital dentistry has revolutionized dental care with the introduction of 3D-printed space maintainers. A systematic literature review was conducted to synthesize the existing evidence on the use of 3D-printed SMs, their clinical outcomes, and parental satisfaction. The literature review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. A predefined search strategy le

Titanium Degradation Products from Dental Implants: Mechanisms of Release, Biodistribution, and Analytical Detection in Biological Matrices.

Titanium-based implants remain among the most successful biomaterials in modern dentistry, but accumulating evidence demonstrates that titanium is not biologically inert under long-term physiological conditions. Mechanical loading, tribocorrosion, acidic and oxidative microenvironments, and biofilm-driven electrochemical processes contribute to progressive surface degradation and the release of titanium ions, microparticles, and nanoparticles into surrounding tissues and biological fluids. The present narrative review synthesizes current evidence regarding the mechanisms of titanium release fr

Restorative dentistry clinical decision-making for hypodontia: peg and missing lateral incisor teeth.

Peg-shaped and missing lateral incisor teeth are common features for patients affected by hypodontia. While improvements in dental appearance may be a strong motivating factor for these patients, providing dental treatment to improve the clinical condition and achieve an acceptable and stable outcome can be complex and lengthy. For patients affected by hypodontia, discussion and consideration of various approaches to their individual treatment are best achieved in a multidisciplinary team environment. This allows debate of options and joint agreement between at least orthodontic and restorative

Tooth resorption in cats: pathophysiology and treatment options.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Tooth resorption is common in the domestic cat and the incidence has been reported to increase with increasing age. Cats with clinically missing teeth have also been found to be more likely to have tooth resorption. All types of teeth in the feline dentition may be affected, but lesions seem to be more common in certain teeth. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Tooth resorption can be difficult to detect, with cats often masking signs of oral discomfort or pain. Routine radiography is required for timely diagnosis, as clinical (visual and tactile) methods only detect late-stage lesions

Diagnosis and management of ankyloglossia in infants and children.

The diagnosis and management of ankyloglossia, commonly referred to as tongue-tie, has become a controversial topic spanning multiple subspecialties within pediatrics, dentistry, and rehabilitation medicine. Changing perspectives on clinical significance, increased awareness of breastfeeding challenges, and a stronger emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach have contributed to a dramatic rise in both diagnosis and intervention in this condition. Between 1997 and 2012, inpatient diagnoses of ankyloglossia in the United States increased nearly 10-fold, from 3,934 to 32,837 cases, with a similar

Radiological Evaluation of Stainless Steel Crowns Placed on Permanent Teeth in Patients Treated under General Anaesthesia.

Evidence-based evaluations of dental treatment are needed to support the development of special care dentistry services. This retrospective study was designed to collect and analyse X-ray images of permanent teeth restored with stainless steel crowns (SSC) in patients treated under general anaesthesia. Between 2013 and 2019, 360 permanent molars were crowned with SSCs in 198 adult patients. One calibrated investigator used an original validated tool to evaluate four radiographic criteria for molars restored with SSCs: (i) marginal adaptation; (ii) interdental proximal contact; (iii) the presen

Restorative Therapy of MIH-Affected Molars.

One fourth of teeth affected by molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) have required or will require treatment due to pain, sensitivity, or posteruptive breakdown. Restorative treatment becomes necessary in cases of severe MIH, characterized by posteruptive breakdown, which exhibits a wide range of clinical characteristics. Until approximately 20 years ago, all techniques, materials, and research were developed for treating caries lesions, not hypomineralisation. Research attempting to evaluate approaches to MIH treatment is recent and inconclusive. Therefore, there is still insufficient high-

[CHRONIC PERIODONTITIS WITH SYMPTOMATIC HYPERTROPHIC GINGIVITIS: CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE].

Gingivitis in traditional national dentistry referred to independent diseases or symptomatic condition in periodontitis and classified morphologically. The diagnostic features of the diseases are characteristic, but the clinical presentation of symptomatic gingivitis and patterns of bone destructions may vary between patients. Successful treatment of the disease depends from proper diagnosis and advanced disease stages, but for symptomatic gingivitis that accompanying chronic periodontitis, protocols include surgical excision. Despite of the high prevalence of chronic generalized periodontitis

Past, present, and future of predoctoral dental education in orofacial pain and TMDs: a call for interprofessional education.

Over the past several decades, there has been an explosion of knowledge in the fields of science and technology as they relate to the profession of dentistry. Due to these advances, dental curricula have had to incorporate many changes as they prepare students as well as faculty members for the twenty-first century. Dental educators have been encouraged to alter their paradigms to these new realities. One of the areas in which change has been profound is the field of orofacial pain (OFP) and, more specifically, temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). OFP/TMDs, once subject matters surrounded by am

Oral signs in the diagnosis of celiac disease: review of the literature.

This study explores the possibility that the celiac disease (CD) may be correlated with the insurgence of some oral signs, as based on a systematic review of the literature. Should this correlation be proven, any dentistry's screening would then be important to diagnose early celiac sprue pathogenesis. A literature survey was accomplished by using the Medline database (Entrez PubMed). The survey, which covered the period from the year 1972 to 2009, provided 382 published articles. Of these, 29 articles were selected according to inclusionary/exclusionary criteria, and consequently qualified fo

[Who will be a good physician? Admission procedures for medical and dental students].

Since 2005, German universities are free to select 60% of their freshmen according to their own admission processes. In 2008, selection of medical students in Germany was mainly based on grades achieved in final school examinations (Abiturnote). Further criteria were used in various combinations: some medical schools conducted interviews or tests, while others rewarded work experience, research awards, or cultural and social dedication. However, solely high school grades and some measures of ability show acceptable validity coefficients with regard to academic and professional success. Evidenc

Laser applications in peri-implantitis therapy: A narrative review.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: The treatment of peri-implantitis remains one of the most challenging areas in implant dentistry, with no universally accepted gold standards for long-term disease resolution. As the prevalence of peri-implantitis continues to rise with increased implant placement, the need for predictable and effective therapies becomes increasingly critical. Laser-assisted treatment has emerged as a promising modality in surgical and non-surgical management of peri-implant diseases due to its ability to decontaminate the implant surface, reduce the bacterial load, and debride bone de

Updated consensus guidelines on the management of Phelan-McDermid syndrome.

Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) is a genetic condition caused by SHANK3 haploinsufficiency and characterized by a wide range of neurodevelopmental and systemic manifestations. The first practice parameters for assessment and monitoring in individuals with PMS were published in 2014; recently, knowledge about PMS has grown significantly based on data from longitudinal phenotyping studies and large-scale genotype-phenotype investigations. The objective of these updated clinical management guidelines was to: (1) reflect the latest in knowledge in PMS and (2) provide guidance for clinicians, resear
