PURPOSE: We evaluated the amplitude of steady state pattern visually evoked cortical potentials (St PVECP) by comparing the amplitude ratio to transient PVECP (Tr PVECP) with the latency of Tr PVECP in macular, optic nerve, and chiasmal lesions.
METHODS: PVECPs were obtained by pattern reversal stimulation of both 3 times and 12 times per second from normal subjects and patients. The peak latency of the P100 component of Tr PVECP and the amplitude ratio (St PVECP/ Tr PVECP) were studied.

A study of 7-year-old children from a fishing village on Madeira has suggested that latencies of evoked potentials may be delayed because of increased exposures to methylmercury during development. The sensory role of the intact and ruptured anterior cruciate ligament was studied by the use of cortical evoked potentials during arthroscopy. This showed a response from the intact ligament in four patients that was reproducible. This response was consistent with those obtained from stimulation of the ipsilateral posterior tibial nerve. We recorded upper and lower limb MEPs and SEPs in 55 patients with clinically suggestive and myelography-documented cervical cord compression due to spondylotic changes. MEPs were abnormal in biceps brachii of 21 patients (38%), in first dorsal interosseous muscle of the hand of 49 patients (89%) and in tibialis anterior of 47 patients (85%). Cortical posterior tibial somatosensory (SSEP) responses were reliably recorded from 67 infants of 33 weeks gestation or less who had normal neurological outcome at 24 months corrected age. Nineteen, randomly selected male patients with lepromatous leprosy were evaluated electrophysiologically. All of these patients had long-standing disease and were treated with dapsone alone. A group of 42 adult patients with supratentorial brain tumors were studied with computed tomography (CT or/and NMR) and brain-stem evoked potentials (BAEPs). 12 patients had meningiomas and 30 had malignant tumors (gliomas and metastases). Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were evaluated in three patients with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy belonging to the same family. This study showed marked alterations of BAEPs in all patients: reduction of wave amplitude, poor repeatability of responses in test-retest and abnormalities in wave form and latency. The neuroradiological examinations (CT-scan, MRI) did not show significant structural brain abnormalities. Abnormal BAEPs in our patients may be related to central metabolic disorder rather than hearing loss.
