A new technique for tear film fluorophotometry.

AIM: To develop a reliable and objective non-touch technique for determination of tear volume and tear secretion by means of tear film fluorophotometry. METHODS: 10 defined concentrations of sodium fluorescein were given in an artificial chamber and measured by the Fluorotron Master (Coherent Radiation Inc). A calibration line was established and the calibration equation was programmed into the Fluorotron Master computer software. In 28 patients (56 eyes) with dry eye symptoms and 15 volunteers (30 eyes) tear volume and tear secretion were then measured directly without taking a tear sample,

Phacoemulsification and nucleic acid-enriched aerosol: considerations from an eye model of cataract simulation.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether phacoemulsification can generate aerosolized single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) and retain sequence integrity using an artificial eye model for experimental cataract surgery. METHODS: A simulation of cataract surgery was performed using an anterior chamber eye model filled with an ssRNA probe at different scalar dilutions (kanamycin positive control ssRNA). A plastic conical cage was built over the artificial eye surface of the mock-up. A total of 24 tests (twice reproduced) were performed, and five nitrocellulose strips were placed 15 cm

Infrared-Triggered Retinomorphic Artificial Synapse Electronic Device Containing Multi-Dimensional van der Waals Heterojunctions.

Biological systems excel in image recognition with low power and fast responses. Inspired by the human eye, researchers have developed solid-state artificial visual systems. In this study, a retinomorphic artificial synapse device based on a tungsten diselenide (WSe2)/indium arsenide quantum dot (InAs QD) heterostructure is developed. This device exhibits enhanced short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) responsivity at 1060 nm, which is a synaptic behavior analogous to the human retina. The WSe2/InAs QD improves charge transport and photon absorption through the quantum confinement effects of InAs QD

Corneal calcification following intensified treatment with sodium hyaluronate artificial tears.

AIM: To report a potential adverse effect of intensified treatment with sodium hyaluronate artificial tears. METHODS: Five cases of deep calcium deposition in the cornea associated with ocular surface disease and frequent use of hyaluronic acid artificial tears are described. All patients used one formulation of phosphate buffered hyaluronate eye drops when rapid calcification developed. All eyes required corneal graft surgery for visual rehabilitation. Specimens at keratoplasty were available for light microscopy and investigation by dispersive x ray analysis. The phosphate concentration in

Recalcitrant Paecilomyces keratitis.

A 54-year-old Caucasian woman presented with corneal ulcer of the right eye of 4 weeks duration after scratching her cornea while removing her contact lens and artificial eye lashes. Her visual acuity was 20/32 (left eye) and finger counting (right eye). She had a 3x3 mm epithelial defect with underlying corneal oedema and hypopyon. Right eye cultures grew Paecilomyces species. Topical and systemic antifungal agents were initiated. Due to the sight-threatening disease, the patient underwent surgical intervention with intrastromal injection of amphotericin B and a large conjunctival flap coveri

Dellen and corneal perforation after bilateral pterygium excision in a patient with no risk factors.

Corneal perforation associated with dellen is a rare but serious complication of a primary pterygium excision. In this case report, we describe a 60-year-old man who underwent a corneal perforation in the centre of corneal dellen in his right eye and corneal dellen in his left eye after the surgical treatment of a bilateral pterygium with a bare sclera technique without adjunctive therapy. He was successfully treated with lamellar keratoplasty in his right eye and a conservative approach in his left eye, consisting of the use of artificial tears, antibiotic ointment and a patch. The clinical e

A Pilot Nonrandomized Controlled Trial Examining the Use of Artificial Tears on the Radioactivity of Tears After Radioactive Iodine Treatment for Thyroid Cancer.

Background: Nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO) is an adverse effect of high dose radioactive iodine (RAI) therapy for thyroid carcinoma. There are currently no established preventive measures. This study assesses whether preservative free artificial tears (PFATs) can decrease the 131I sodium iodide (131I) activity in the tears of patients following RAI therapy for thyroid carcinoma, and potentially serve as a preventive measure for RAI-associated NLDO. Methods: This non-randomized prospective pilot clinical trial recruited contact-lens wearing patients undergoing RAI therapy for thyroid canc

Visual analysis of autoimmune dry eye studies based on bibliometrics.

BACKGROUND: Dry eye is a chronic ocular surface disease caused by the instability of tear film or the imbalance of the ocular surface microenvironment which can lead to a diverse range of ocular discomfort symptoms. At present, the relevant mechanism of autoimmunity and treatment of dry eye is still unclear. Due to the proliferation of research papers in this field, visual analysis of existing papers can provide reference for future research. METHODS: The academic papers of Web of Science were searched with the topics of "autoimmunity" and "dry eye," and the countries, institutions and keywor

Rationale for 24-hour management of dry eye disease: A review.

The symptom severity of patients with dry eye disease (DED) varies over a 24-hour period. It is typically worse upon waking than later in the morning and deteriorates towards the evening. Substantial differences in the characteristics and physical properties of the tear film, such as levels of inflammation, pH, osmolarity, volume and stability, also exist between night (sleeping) and day (waking), and over the course of the day itself. Data on diurnal variation in symptom severity and tear film characteristics have been reviewed to recommend a management strategy that supports the various need
