Although an estimated 1 million Americans suffer ocular injuries each year, the setting of injury and its prognostic implications have not been closely examined. Using data compiled by the Eye Injury Registry of Alabama (EIRA) from 514 cases of serious eye injury, we examined the demographics and prognosis of ocular injury by setting of injury. A 70-year-old woman who had undergone enucleation of the left eye at the age of 28 years because of complications from an injury to the globe, and in whom a previously unsuspected posterior uveal melanoma was detected after enucleation, had no further problems until 42 years later, when she was discovered to have a liver malignancy of undetermined origin. After six months of chemotherapy, the patient developed a mass in the anophthalmic left orbit. Biopsy of the orbital mass disclosed malignant melanoma, and reexamination of the liver biopsy specimen disclosed similar malignant melanoma cells.

A clinicopathologic correlation between two patients with acute-onset Aspergillus endophthalmitis undergoing enucleation is reported. These two patients presented with pain, redness, and decreased vision following uncomplicated cataract surgery. A 5-year-old girl was bitten in her left eye by a lance-headed viper identified as Bothrops moojeni, measuring 115 cm of length. There was severe facial swelling and left exophthalmus, and enucleation of the eye was necessary. The patient apparently had mild systemic envenoming, but local inflammatory signs and histological evidence of necrosis suggest that both the mechanical trauma and the local action of the venom had a role in the genesis of the eye lesion. It is arguable if the loss of the eye could be prevented even if the antivenom was administered earlier.

A 78-year-old woman who was known to suffer from bilateral absolute glaucoma underwent enucleation of her left eye because of corneal perforation with spontaneous bleeding. The clinical and pathologic findings were compatible with spontaneous expulsive hemorrhage. A possible cause of the hemorrhage in this case was inflamed necrotic choroidal vascular walls that bled after corneal perforation with decompression in the glaucomatous eye.

AIM: To describe the clinicopathologic features of pyogenic granuloma (granulation tissue proliferation) extending from the retina.
METHODS: We describe 3 patients who underwent enucleation for endophthalmitis. The eyes were processed routinely for histopathologic examination.
RESULTS: All 3 enucleated eyes contained granulation tissue with reactive vascular channels and intervening stroma infiltrated with inflammatory cells. The vascular channels were arranged in a fan-like configuration and the tissue was classified as representing pyogenic granulomas.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to report the results in a series of acrylic orbital implant placements without the use of wrapping material.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of the patients who underwent enucleation with acrylic orbital implant insertion without scleral wrapping at the Department of Ophthalmology, Poznań University of Medical Sciences, Poland, between 2013 and 2020.
