Corneal abrasion is the most common ocular injury occurring in the perioperative period. Corneal abrasion may occur during general anesthesia, monitored anesthesia care, regional anesthesia, or in the immediate recovery period. This injury is not usually apparent until the patient is in the PACU, and the perianesthesia nurse may be the first clinician to detect this complication. Preventive measures and vigilant care can help reduce the incidence of corneal abrasion in susceptible patients. The term Universal Precautions (UP) originates from the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta (Taylor 1993). The precautions recognise that it is safer for all patients to be treated as potentially infective, whatever their status in life. The basic aim of UP is to lower the level of contact with blood or body fluids. This reduces the risk to all personnel of contact with blood born viruses and pathogenic organisms carried in other body fluids (Wicker 1991). The precautions recognise that there are high risk environments rather than high risk patients.

OBJECTIVE: There are no outcome reports in the literature for outpatient management of traumatic hyphemas in children. Therefore we studied such cases at our institutions.
DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
PARTICIPANTS: 25 children less than 16 years of age with grade I traumatic hyphemas.
INTERVENTION: Inactivity at home with frequent office visits to monitor progress and complications. Treatment otherwise varied but virtually all patients received protective eye shields and topical steroids.

Improvised explosive devices and mines pose a formidable threat to military convoys traveling in Iraq. This study evaluated battle injuries sustained by a mechanized battalion operating against this threat. The objective was to gain insight into injury profiles and prevention. In the period examined, 32 attacks injured 120 Marines, causing 188 injuries. Upper extremity and head injuries (70%) were common, whereas lower extremity injuries (11%) were rare (as expected, given the threat and the body areas exposed). The aims of this study were to assess the risk of conjunctival contamination with blood during the treatment of epistaxis and to identify if certain patients and treatments may pose a higher risk. Protective eye-wear worn by ENT trainees during the ward management of epistaxis was examined for contamination with blood splashes. This occurred in 18% of cases. The incidence of contamination was higher when two treatment modalities were required and when treating elderly female patients.
