We present the case of a 59-year-old woman with a history of plastic surgery at the forehead who complained of progressive indentations at the frontal skull. CT and MR scans revealed significant bone thinning, presenting as lytic skull lesions, which progressed over a period of 3 years. Biopsies were obtained from the lytic lesions and histology showed fibrotic tissue, synthetic residue of previous cosmetic procedure, and no evidence of infection or neoplasm. Progressive cranial bone resorption places the patient at increased risk for cerebral injury. This case highlights a potential complicat

A 42-year-old woman presented with oral and labial erosions, conjunctivitis, facial rash and lichenoid erythematous papules on the trunk. Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) was suspected, and a search for a neoplasm revealed an intra-abdominal Castleman tumour sized 7 x 5 x 6 cm. After removal of the Castleman tumour, the skin and mucosal inflammation gradually subsided over the next 12 months. However, due to irreversible pulmonary involvement the patient died of intractable respiratory distress 2 years after the onset of the disease. Systemic corticosteroids, azathioprine, cyclophosphamide, high

The list of differential diagnoses in the case of midline facial granulomatous lesions is long. Intensive investigation into the true origin of disease must be done before definitive treatment can be begun. Extensive and repeated biopsies are necessary. The diagnosis may narrow down to the nonspecific midline lethal granuloma. Evidence in the literature coupled with our experience strongly indicates that this disease does not exist as a pathologic entity but merely as a clinical syndrome which upon further evaluation will reveal either Wegener's granulomatosis or a reticulum cell neoplasm. Osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle is extremely rare. An unusual case of a 32-year-old man is reported. Throughout a two-year period the patient suffered from intractable pain in the left T. M. J. region, anterior dislocation of the condylar head, malocclusion and facial asymmetry. Radiologic examination revealed that the cartilaginous cap of an overgrowth had functioned as an articular cartilage. A "pseudo articulation" was created with the prominent articular eminence and allowed an almost free movement of the mandible. Review of the seven reported cases revealed that the rare occurren

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a rare plasma cell neoplasm occurring outside the bone marrow, predominantly in the head and neck region. Representing 3%-5% of all plasma cell neoplasms, EMP poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to its rarity and, proximity to vital structures. We report two cases of EMP involving the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx. A 30-year-old male presented with right diplopia, headache, and bilateral nasal blockage. Examination revealed a nasopharyngeal mass with bony erosion and multiple osteolytic lesions. Histopathology and i

The purpose of this paper is to report a case of chondroblastic osteosarcoma in the region of the maxilla, with 5 months of evolution. The term osteosarcoma refers to a heterogeneous group of malignancies with bone formation or mesenchymal tissue with histopathological evidence of osteogenic differentiation. The pattern of chondroblastic osteosarcoma represents 25% of all reported cases of this neoplasm. Its histopathological diagnosis is based on the predominance of a chondroid matrix formed in the midst of neoplastic cells. A woman patient, 27-year old, melanoderm, presented on extraoral exa

BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common neoplasm of the parotid gland. It is a benign tumor composed of epithelial and myoepithelial cells arranged in various morphological patterns. The most common reasons contributing to a recurrent disease are obvious or underestimated tumor spillage, incomplete excision, and violation of the pseudocapsule of the tumor.
CASE REPORT: This article presents a case of gross multinodular recurrence of a parotid gland pleomorphic adenoma in a 38-year-old female patient. Upon clinical examination of the homolateral neck, multiple, painless, well-define

We report a case of exceedingly rare cutaneous neoplasm with histological features of malignancy and uncertain biological potential. The nodular, darkly pigmented facial tumor with central exulceration, size 12 x 10 x 7 mm, of the skin 61-year-old man preauricular left was completely exised. Histologically tumor consists of atypical squamous cells, which express signs of moderate to significant pleomorphism, mitotically active, with foci forming of parakeratotic horn cysts ("pearls"). Characteristically tumor also consists of large number of atypical melanocytes with multifocal pattern, insert

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastic carcinoma is a rare, aggressive odontogenic neoplasm of the jaws in which the epithelial cells exhibit cytologic features of recognizable ameloblastoma and malignancy. Cases with metastasis have been infrequently reported.
METHODS: A case of a 64-year-old white woman with mandibular ameloblastic carcinoma with documented distant metastasis is presented. The patient's presenting symptoms included facial asymmetry of the right jaw over 2 months and the development of moderate trismus. Clinical manifestations, pathology, treatment, and biologic behavior are discussed. Th

Computed tomography allows today to reconstruct three-dimensional (3D) images from axial scans. The authors report their experience in cranio-facial pathology achieved in two Departments of Radiology (University of Trieste, Italy and University of Stanford, California). 3D images have been realized using two different softwares, one of which allows to reconstruct both soft tissue and bone structures. The applications in maxillo-facial traumas, cranio-facial malformations and head tumours are discussed. 3D images turned out to be very useful for the optimal visualization and for the spatial dem

OBJECTIVE: To preliminarily establish a category of facial symmetry perception after maxillary reconstruction using anterolateral thigh flap (ALTF) by the methods of stereophotogrammetry and subjective assessment.
METHODS: The patients underwent maxillectomy due to neoplasms invasion, and all the maxillary defects were reconstructed using ALTF.Three-dimensional (3D) photographs were captured from the patients with a stereophotogrammatrical camera set-up.In the Geomagic software, the mirror image was created by reflecting along an arbitrary plane outside of the face. After the registration, the

Perineural invasion is increasingly recognized as a significant mode of tumor spread in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the skin. Clinically, it is very difficult to diagnose perineural involvement in the majority of patients due to the lack of symptoms. The occasional propensity for perineural invasion from SCCs of the skin of the head and neck region is well documented and, although SCCs arising from actinically damaged skin reportedly have a low incidence of metastasis or deep invasion, failure to recognize this potential mode of spread could result in fatal consequences.

Head and facial pain are common in neurological practice and the pain often arises in the orbit or is referred into the eye. This is due to the autonomic innervation of the eye and orbit. There are acute and chronic pain syndromes. This review gives an overview of the differential diagnosis and treatment. Idiopathic headache syndromes, such as migraine and cluster headache are the most frequent and are often debilitating conditions. Trigemino-autonomic cephalalgias (SUNCT and SUNA) have to be taken into account, as well as trigeminal neuralgia. Trigemino-autonomic headache after eye operations

INTRODUCTION: Carcinosarcomas are rare malignant neoplasms formed by embryonic tissues (ectoderm and mesoderm) and present remarkably aggressive character with unfavourable prognosis. These lesions are rarely diagnosed in the sinonasal cavity and only a few cases are reported in the literature. This manuscript aimed to report a rare case of a large and aggressive sinonasal carcinosarcoma that involved the facial middle third and to discuss the proposed treatment.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 54-year-old female patient sought treatment for a large swelling on the left side of the face. A CT-scan re

BACKGROUND: The trichilemmal carcinoma is a rare malignant neoplasm, whose origin lies in the annexes of the skin, because of its low prevalence often confused with other dermal tumors, the differential diagnosis is not easy and is usually made by exclusion; in theory, its behavior is slow with little tendency to send both regional lymph node metastasis and systemic. Due to the limited number of cases there is no consensus on the prognosis, although it is generally considered good. The aim of this report is to show a case that, contrary to previous reports, the clinical presentation is aggress

The advent of magnetic resonance imaging has allowed otologists to focus on the early removal of acoustic neuromas with the goal of hearing preservation. Clearly, there are some unpredictable factors, such as placement of the tumor in the medial vs the lateral segment of the internal auditory canal and the capricious nature of the blood supply to these benign neoplasms, that make prediction of hearing preservation difficult. Nonetheless, the present goal of surgery for removal of acoustic tumors has changed its focus from preservation of the facial nerve alone to preservation of the facial ner

The simultaneous occurrence of benign and malignant tumours in the ipsilateral parotid gland is extremely rare. The cases of five patients with synchronous multiple parotid gland tumours consisting of diverse combinations of benign and malignant histological types are presented here. In addition, all published cases of this entity identified in the PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases up to January 2018 were reviewed. It is concluded that clinical vigilance should be raised when multifocal tumours are indicated by imaging examinations, in the presence of unmovable, painful, and rapid g

Between the 2 of january and the 31 of december 1985 there was done a study of 215 children in ages between 0-15 years in the Department of Oral Diagnosis of the Ibadan University Hospital, where they were external patients with oral infections/swelling. The male-female proportion was 1.3:1. 42.33% were from 0 to 5. 70.24% belonged to the lowest social group of the community, with a high risk of oral-facial infections. The situation of their oral hygiene didn't reflect their social and economical state, and meant no predisposition to infection. The common infections were alveolar abscess, acut

Elastofibroma is a rare soft tissue tumor that most commonly occurs in the subscapular region. It has also been reported in several other anatomical locations. To our knowledge, no previous reports have described elastofibromas in the anterior aspect of the face. A 36-year-old man with intellectual disability was referred to our department for the evaluation of a painless multinodular lesion on the philtrum. The lesion was initially misdiagnosed as a dermatologic condition by the department of dermatology and was treated accordingly, however, it worsened, prompting referral to our department.
