A cross-sectional study was conducted on bovine brucellosis in a sample of 173 medium/small-scale cattle farmers in a tropical region of Ecuador. A total of 173 milk tank samples were collected and analyzed through an indirect ELISA. A survey was also applied to each farm to collect information on herd management, evaluate the level of knowledge about the disease and estimate the risk that bovine brucellosis on those farms could represent for public health. The apparent prevalence among farms was 11.5% (95% CI: 6.7%-16.2%). The medium farms had a prevalence significantly higher (23.8%, 95% CI:

Foodborne pathogens, including antibiotic-resistant species, constitute a severe menace to food safety globally, especially food animals. Identifying points of concern that need immediate mitigation measures to prevent these bacteria from reaching households requires a broad understanding of these pathogens' spread along the food production chain. We investigated the distribution, antibiotic susceptibility, molecular characterization and clonality of Enterococcus spp. in an intensive pig production continuum in South Africa, using the farm-to-fork approach. Enterococcus spp. were isolated from

Cats represent a potential source of Coxiella burnetii, the aetiological agent of Q fever in humans. The prevalence and risk factors of C. burnetii infection in farm, pet and feral cats were studied in Quebec, Canada, using a cross-sectional study. Serum samples were tested using a specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the presence of antibodies against C. burnetii, whereas rectal swabs were assayed using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) for the molecular detection of the bacteria. Potential risk factors for farm cats were investigated using clinical exa

Fasciolosis caused by Fasciola hepatica is responsible for major production losses in cattle farms. The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of farm management practices on liver fluke prevalence on Irish dairy farms and to document the current control measures against parasitic diseases. In total, 369 dairy farms throughout Ireland were sampled from October to December 2013, each providing a single bulk tank milk (BTM) sample for liver fluke antibody-detection ELISA testing and completing a questionnaire on their farm management. The analysis of samples showed that cows on 78% (

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a major seafood-associated bacterial pathogen that occurs in marine and aquaculture environments. This study examined genome-wide diversity among 109 V. parahaemolyticus isolates recovered from shrimp farms and retail markets in Zhejiang Province, China. Whole-genome data were analyzed using an all-core-genome single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) phylogeny, multilocus sequence typing (MLST), O- and K-locus genotyping, accessory-gene composition, and virulence- and antimicrobial-resistance gene screening. The callable core genome comprised 4,219,518 bp (77.8% of the 5

Schmallenberg virus (SBV) is endemic in Europe and other parts of the world and represents an underestimated and underdiagnosed cause of abortion and economic losses for livestock farms. In the present study, we evaluated SBV's impact on three ruminant farms, in particular, two dairy cattle farms with reproductive problems (including abortions, stillbirths, and malformations) and a clinically healthy buffalo farm involved in oocyte collection through ovum pick-up (OPU) for in vitro embryo production and commercial sale. All sampled animals were subjected to serological assays against the main

This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial resistance profiles of Enterococcus faecium (E. faecium) in waterfowl farms across selected provinces in China and to explore the impact of florfenicol on linezolid resistance in E. faecium. Between 2022 and 2025, 490 E. faecium strains were isolated from samples collected from duck and goose farms in 11 Chinese provinces. These isolates exhibited high resistance rates to multiple antibiotics, with a linezolid resistance rate of 69.2% (339/490). Transferable linezolid resistance genes were identified as the primary mechanism underlying linezoli

Studies of the porcine respiratory virome are essential for understanding the complex viral communities in the porcine respiratory tract and their roles in health and disease. Characterizing the respiratory virome provides insights into the diversity, prevalence, and dynamics of pathogenic and commensal viruses, thereby facilitating the identification of emerging and previously unrecognized respiratory pathogens. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) is a method for analyzing viral communities, enabling comprehensive monitoring of circulating and co-detected pathogens in animals. In th

Most people are unaware of the common practice of separating dairy cows and calves shortly after birth, and when informed, often have a negative view of this practice. To better reflect the natural behavior of cows and calves, some dairy farms are developing alternative systems that allow longer contact between cows and calves than the conventional separation immediately after birth. Such cow-calf-contact (CCC) systems are not widespread but are becoming increasingly important to farmers. The main objective of this work was to descriptively explore the implementation strategies of successful C

Many piglet-producing farms are facing poor reproductive performance, yet their characteristics remain poorly understood. This study aimed to identify factors contributing to reproductive disorders based on information easily identifiable through an oral survey. Therefore, forty Austrian piglet producing farms (35-2000 sows) were surveyed using a questionnaire mainly addressing management, treatment and prophylaxis. Five key performance indicators (KPIs) were defined to assess farm productivity: farrowing rate, return-to-estrus rate, abortion rate, total piglets born per litter, and piglets we

Trichinosis is a parasitic disease caused by Trichinella spiralis that affects pigs, rodents, and some wild animals. Poor sanitation facilitates the spread of disease in swine, posing a risk to public health. In Mexico, pig farming ranks third in meat production and operates at 3 primary levels: industrial, semi-industrial, and backyard farming. In Mexico, backyard pig farming is a common practice primarily because it provides a source of meat at minimal or no cost. However, these pigs can act as reservoirs, sustaining the parasite's life cycle and potentially introducing it into domestic envi

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Ducks worldwide are infected with duck circovirus (DuCV), which causes feather abnormality, emaciation, and poor growth performance. DuCV is similar to other circoviruses that induce immunosuppression due to the occurrence of the bursae of Fabricius (BF) and spleen atrophies. In Thailand, retarded ducks with feather losses were submitted for disease investigation. The ducks presented low body weight gain, had small BF and spleens, and were consistent with duck-infected DuCV. Our study investigated the possibility of DuCV infection in duck flocks in Thailand. We also analyze

Extensive farming systems form an integral part of sheep production systems across Europe. However, with innate production handicaps, declining sheep numbers and narrow economic margins, production is becoming increasingly challenging threatening the future sustainability of the industry. Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are a significant cause of production losses to the global sheep industry, with well-established resistance to the major anthelmintic groups. Traditionally, extensive farming systems are not thought to have a significant parasite challenge compared with intensive farms, but t

INTRODUCTION: Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause food-borne infections and is responsible for the most common gastrointestinal illnesses. The emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains worldwide is a major threat, representing a major challenge in public health. To reduce its incidence, the One Health approach is required, and the development of new biocontrol protocols will help prevent or eliminate the spread of Salmonella. Prevention measures, such as on-farm cleaning and disinfection protocols, are a crucial step in reducing infection to new flocks and eliminating bacteria that

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis can cause meningitis, polyarthritis and acute death in piglets. However, the risk factors associated with S. suis infection remain incompletely understood. Therefore, a longitudinal study was carried out, in which six batches from two Spanish pig farms with S. suis problems were repeatedly examined to determine possible risk factors.
METHODS: A prospective case-control study was conducted, and potential risk factors were evaluated using mixed-effects logistic regression models. The explanatory variables included: (a) concomitant pathogens; (b) biomarkers associa

This study was designed to characterize the dynamics of infection of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae in naïve replacement gilts after introduction to positive systems. Ninety-eight naïve gilts were monitored in three positive commercial farms (A, B, and C). The näive gilts were housed for 21 days in pens adjacently located to older gilt cohorts (named seeders), which have been naturally exposed to the positive farms. The infection dynamics was evaluated by PCR and ELISA, from laryngeal swabs and serum samples, respectively. Samples were collected at 150 (arrival), 165, 180, 210, 240, 270, 300 days of
