Human amniotic membrane as a homograft material was compared to temporalis fascia to close tympanic membrane perforations in 50 patients with chronic otitis media. Human amniotic membrane was used in 20 patients while temporalis fascia was used in the remaining 30. Anatomical closure of the perforation and reduction of the air-bone gap was measured. The graft uptake showed a 65% success rate for the amniotic membrane and 56.7% for the temporalis fascia at 3 months post-operatively. The authors present a case of a traumatic extensor hallucis longus tendon rupture sustained 2 days after hallux valgus and hammer toe correction. The ruptured tendon, separated by a 6-cm defect, was repaired using a fascia lata allograft. This case demonstrates a serious complication of a commonly performed procedure and a salvage technique useful for dealing with large tendon defects.

The aim of this study was to compare the pubovaginal sling with a new Vicryl mesh rectus fascia (VMRF) sling in the surgical treatment of low urethral pressure genuine stress incontinence. Fifty-one consecutive women who had a VMRF (n = 27) or a pubovaginal sling (n = 24) procedure between March 1995 and December 1997 were evaluated. This study was undertaken to study the long-term rate of recurrence of ptosis and other postoperative complications after frontalis suspension using banked irradiated fascia lata. One hundred thirty-two lids of 72 patients underwent frontalis suspension between 1980 and 1989. The preoperative diagnoses included severe congenital ptosis (83%), blepharophimosis (10%), third nerve palsy (4%), and chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (3%). A traumatic, extended first ray amputation in a child was treated with an innervated cross-leg tensor fascia lata fasciocutaneous flap. The flap provided thin composite tissue coverage, immobilization in a position of relative comfort, and sensory innervation to the weight-bearing surface. Consideration of this flap is recommended when dealing with large defects of the foot.
