Cancer in the offspring of radiation workers: a record linkage study.

OBJECTIVES: To test the "Gardner hypothesis" that childhood leukaemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma can be caused by fathers' exposure to ionising radiation before the conception of the child, and, more generally, to investigate whether such radiation exposure of either parent is a cause of childhood cancer. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTING: Great Britain. SUBJECTS: 35,949 children diagnosed as having cancer, together with matched controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Parental employment as radiation worker as defined by inclusion in the National Registry for Radiation Workers and being monitored

The Cajal Legacy: The papers of his granddaughter, Maria Angeles Ramón y Cajal Junquera.

María Ángeles Ramón y Cajal Junquera (1934-2018) was the daughter of Luis Ramón y Cajal Fañanás (1892-1973), the Nobel Prize winner's seventh and last child. For years, father and daughter had been collecting documents related to Cajal. María Ángeles maintained a friendly relationship with one of the present authors (SGR) by telephone for about three years (mid-2012 to 2015). Unexpectedly, she donated 28 documents that she and her father had collected to SGR (press clippings, interviews, correspondence, lawsuits, etc). She and her father had collected. Herein, we analyze documents relating to

Out of Sync: Parent-Child Behavioral Synchrony in Conduct Problem Subgroups.

Parent-child behavioral synchrony-the dyad's moment-to-moment coordination of behavior and emotion-supports children's socioemotional development, yet most evidence comes from cross-sectional community samples using global indices, limiting clinical insight for heterogeneous conduct problems (CP). This prospective study tested baseline differences and treatment-related change in discrete synchrony facets among clinic-referred children with CP, comparing CP-only, primary callous-unemotional (CU; CU without internalizing problems), and secondary CU (CU with internalizing problems) variants. Study of myths and beliefs among the parents of a child with cleft lip and palate.

AIM: The aim of the study was the identification of predictors of psychology and beliefs among parents of children affected by cleft lip and cleft palate. METHODS: The study included a sample of 157 parents of children having cleft lips and cleft palates. Parents were given a questionnaire related to their beliefs and reasons behind deformity. RESULTS: Out of 157 participants, 90 were fathers, and 67 were mothers. The children with deformities included 105 boys and 52 girls. The majority of parents (43) believed that the eclipse was one of the reasons for the deformity and the other was God'

Granulocytic progenitor cells (CFC) in a child with infantile genetic agranulocytosis (IGA) and in phenotypically normal parents.

Granulocytic progenitor cells (CFC) from the bone marrow of a child with infantile genetic agranulocytosis (IGA) were cultured twice in vitro, and the bone marrow colony-forming ability was found to be elevated. Nevertheless, when the colony-forming ability was considered in view of the differential marrow cell count and the level of circulating granulocytes, an ineffective granulopoiesis was suggested. In this patient, the blood culture showed a high number of circulating CFC. Bone marrow and blood CFC cultures were also done for the child's two parents, who were phenotypically normal and unq

Are Negative Parental Attributions Predicted by Situational Stress?: From a Theoretical Assumption Toward an Experimental Answer.

In an experimental within-subjects research design, we studied the theoretical assumption that stress predicts negative parental attributions, which until now was mainly studied using cross-sectional study designs. During home visits to 105 families, mothers and fathers were subjected to two experimental conditions and two control conditions. In the experimental conditions, parents completed the Parental Attributions of Child behavior Task (PACT, a computerized attribution task) under two different stressful conditions (i.e., cognitive load and white noise); in the control conditions, the PACT

Testosterone, fathers as providers and caregivers, and child health: Evidence from fisher-farmers in the Republic of the Congo.

Males in vertebrate species with biparental care commonly face a life history trade-off between investing in mating versus parenting effort. Among these males, testosterone is frequently elevated during mating and competition and reduced when males help raise offspring. These physiological patterns may be adaptive, increasing males' fitness through investments in young. However, for some species, including humans, indirect parenting often benefits young but can also involve male competition and risk-taking behavior and may be facilitated by elevated testosterone. Despite potential adaptive fun

Getting under the skin: Physiological stress and witnessing paternal arrest in young children with incarcerated fathers.

U.S. jails see nearly 11 million annual admissions, rates that disproportionately affect men of color-more than half of whom are fathers. An estimated 7% of U.S. children experience the incarceration of a parent, increasing their risk for poor developmental and health outcomes. Although stress processes are often suggested as an underlying mechanism linking paternal incarceration to child well-being, few studies have examined such links. To study how witnessing a father's arrest prior to incarceration in jail relates to children's stress processes, we collected data on 123 individuals from 41

Screening fathers for postpartum depression in a maternal-child health clinic: a program evaluation in a midwest urban academic medical center.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) impacts fathers as well as mothers, and is estimated to affect between 8 and 13% of fathers. Paternal PPD is a risk factor for worsened quality of life, poor physical and mental health, and developmental and relational harms in the father-mother-child triad. There are no current recommendations for PPD screening among fathers. Paternal PPD screening was piloted in an intergenerational postpartum primary care clinic. METHODS: The pilot was carried out in an intergenerational postpartum primary care clinic located at a Midwest urban academic safety net he

An analysis of homicide by young persons in England and Wales.

An analysis of 11 children (one girl, 10 boys) convicted of homicide indicates a maternal over-dominant relationship in eight of the males studied. The murderers were found to have more cooperative personalities than other children found guilty of non-capital offences and showed both normal intelligence and personality factors. Despite a history of "blackouts" in several cases, all were found on investigation to be free from both major and minor epilepsy. Difficulty was experienced in determining the presence or absence of parental alcoholism, promiscuity, and criminal convictions. All of the

Early-Life Hygiene-Related Factors and Risk of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Scandinavian Birth Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate whether early-life hygiene-related factors influenced the risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in a Scandinavian population and test the association's consistency across cohorts. METHODS: This study followed 117 493 participants in the All Babies in Southeast Sweden study and the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study. IBD diagnoses were defined by national registers. Comprehensive data on hygiene-related exposures, such as having pets, rural living, daycare attendance, and siblings, were retrieved from questionnaires administered from pregnan

Male to female: the role transformation of transsexuals.

Twelve male transsexuals were found to have acquired a successtion of gender roles from childhood to adulthood-ambivalent, homosexual, drag queen, and transsexual. Thse roles constituted different stages of their livers during which they were clarifying their psychosocial gender role as transsexuals. Their transition through these roles suggests that these individuals are a subset of the transsexual phenomenon, for many--probably most--other transsexuals do not adopt these roles prior to becoming adult transsexuals. The social interaction of these transsexuals with significant others differed

Social class and parenting children with mild and moderate mental retardation.

Based on Kohn's (1977) and Gecas' (1979) theories of social class and parenting values, the role of socioeconomic status (SES) as a determinant of parenting attitudes and behaviors and as a moderator of problems associated with raising children with handicaps was evaluated among 171 families raising a child with mild or moderate mental retardation. Self-report measures assessed mothers' and fathers' attitudes regarding control, independence, and closeness within the family, and parental and family problems. Supportive, aversive, and controlling parent-child interactions were observed in the ho
