Skeletal disease in a father and daughter with a novel monoallelic WNT1 mutation.

CONTEXT: Most heritable causes of low bone mass in children occur due to mutations affecting type 1 collagen. We describe two related patients with low bone mass and fracture without mutations in the type 1 collagen genes. CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe the index case of a 10-year-old girl with low-impact fractures in childhood and her 59-year-old father with traumatic fractures in adulthood, both with low bone mineral density. They were found to have the same heterozygous missense mutation in the WNT1 gene (p.Gly222Arg), occurring in a highly conserved WNT motif in close proximity to the Friz

Father Absence, Childhood Stress, and Reproductive Maturation in South Africa.

The hypothesis that father absence during childhood, as well as other forms of childhood psychosocial stress, might influence the timing of sexual maturity and adult reproductive behaviors has been the focus of considerable research. However, the majority of studies that have examined this prediction have used samples of women of European descent living in industrialized, low-fertility nations. This paper tests the father-absence hypothesis using the Cape Area Panel Study (CAPS), which samples young adults in Cape Town, South Africa. The sample contains multiple racial groups (blacks, coloured

Child is father of the man: child abuse and development of future psychopathology.

Available epidemiological data indicate that the abuse of children within families is a very common phenomenon, and is still on the rise. Among others, abuse includes direct physical and emotional violence to the child, as well as the indirect emotional trauma of witnessing interparental violence. These early trauma experienced within the context of the family can influence the development of the child's personality as well as predispose towards the development of mental disorders in adulthood. There are some important factors influencing the occurrence of abuse, or the conditions predisposing

Inherited 15q24 microdeletion syndrome in twins and their father with phenotypic variability.

BACKGROUND: Deletions including chromosome 15q24 have been delineated in recent years as a separate syndrome with phenotypic variability. Here we report a familial 15q24 deletion and further contribute to the phenotypic description of this syndrome. METHODS: Molecular karyotyping and description of the phenotype of three patients in the same family with a 15q24 deletion. RESULTS: Parental transmission of the 15q24 deletion syndrome is described in the same family. The affected, the father and his twin offspring, all exhibit the typical facial features, signs and symptoms consistent with the

Asymptomatic hypospadias with tight meatal stricture in the father of twelve children.

Hypospadias is a highly prevalent congenital anomaly. English articles, indexed in PubMed, published the long-term sexual and reproductive outcome following hypospadias repair. Almost all repairable cases of hypospadias are operated in childhood. Although distal hypospadias does not interfere with fertility, it is worthy reporting a case of an elderly man, who fathers 12 children and has no urologic complaint, presented with unrepaired coronal hypospadias and severely tight external urethral meatus.

Proven germline mosaicism in a father of two children with CHARGE syndrome.

CHARGE syndrome is an autosomal dominant malformation syndrome caused by mutations in the CHD7 gene. The majority of cases are sporadic and only few familial cases have been reported. In these families, mosaicism in one parent, as well as parent- to-child transmission of a CHD7 mutation, has been described. In some further cases, germline mosaicism has been suggested. Here, we report the first case in which germline mosaicism could be demonstrated in a father of two affected children with CHARGE syndrome. The truncating mutation c.7302dupA in exon 34 of the CHD7 gene was found in both affected

The death of John Paul Jones and resurrection as 'father of the US Navy'.

John Paul Jones, 'father of the US Navy', died under mysterious circumstances on July 18, 1792. Although his remains were resurrected and autopsied 113 years later, the cause of his death has yet to be explained fully. In this detailed review of his clinical history and autopsy findings, we conclude, as have others, that Jones died of kidney failure of undermined etiology. Although 'interstitial nephritis' was diagnosed by the prosectors who performed his autopsy, we believe glomerulopathy (possibly IgA nephropathy) was more likely responsible for his kidney failure and that his death was due

Longitudinal study on the predictors of parental stress in mothers and fathers of toddlers.

AIM: Longitudinal study on the predictors of parental stress in mothers and fathers of toddlers. BACKGROUND: To study whether anxiety, depression, or marital problems increase the parenting stress in parents of toddlers. METHODS: At early pregnancy, 2 - 3 months, and 2 - 3 years after delivery, 214 low-risk couples filled in questionnaires on their marital relationship, social support, child's temperament, and self-evaluated competence in routine care-taking. In hierarchical regression analyses, they were used as predictors of parental stress. RESULTS: Those mothers who in early pregnancy h…

Molecular evidence of father-to-child transmission of hepatitis B virus.

At present in Japan, only high-risk infants born to chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected mothers are given HBV vaccine. However, children can contract the virus from other HBV-infected family members, including fathers. The aim of this study is to present substantial and unequivocal evidence of father-to-child transmission of HBV infection using techniques including homology analysis and phylogenetic analysis. Thirteen chronic HBV-infected members of five families that included eight children and their respective fathers were enrolled in this study. Homology analysis and phylogenetic analy…

Donor, father or parent? Conceiving paternity in the Australian Family Court.

Planned parenthood within the international lesbian and gay communities has attracted considerable attention and controversy in the past decade. On 5 April 2002, Guest J of the Family Court of Australia acknowledged a lesbian couple as resident parents of 2-year-old 'Patrick'. This judgement was remarkable in that it signalled a break with the well-documented international legal non-recognition of lesbian non-biological parents. However, the judgement was actually a loss for the two women, who had initiated legal proceedings in a bid to have the biological father's contact visits with the chil

[HBV C gene mutation in the transmission from father to infant].

OBJECTIVE: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA was detected from infants whose mothers were negative for all HBV markers and the fathers were HBV carrier, the homology of HBV sequence of fathers and fetus was high, and HBV mutations concentrated on some points, and the transmission of HBV from father to fetus was also identified in some reports. The present study aimed to study HBV transmission from father to infant. METHODS: The study enrolled 16 pairs of fathers who were HBV carriers and infants whose mothers were negative for HBV markers. The infants had evidences for intrauterine HBV infection. T…

Fathering pregnancies: marking health-risk behaviors in urban adolescents.

PURPOSE: To establish self-reported rates and associated correlates of fathering pregnancies in urban teen males, and to explore the possibility of using their pregnancy history as a marker for other health-risk behaviors. METHODS: A blinded, self-administered questionnaire was given to the predominantly African-American patients of an inner-city adolescent outpatient clinic. Urine was also collected in a blinded, anonymous fashion, matched to the questionnaires, and tested for five drugs of abuse. Males were classified as having or not having a pregnancy history (PH) according to a questionn

[Familial form of ureterocele with double ureter: 2 sisters and their father].

Double ureter is a frequent congenital malformation and the presence of a ureterocele on the ureter draining the superior renal pelvis is a not exceptional association. The abnormality is usually diagnosed in children by intravenous urography or ultrasound. It is extremely rare to find such a lesion in different members of the same family, as only a few cases have been published in the literature. Our case is original in that three members of the family presented the abnormality and it was the father who was affected, rather than the mother, as in the cases reported in the other two publicatio

Early loss of mother or father predicts depression in old age.

The independent predictive roles of early losses, personality traits, acute losses and long-term stress situations for the occurrence of depression in elderly Finns were described using a longitudinal design. The persons non-depressed in an epidemiological study in 1984-85 were interviewed in 1989-90 (N = 679) and the occurrence of depression was determined according to DSM III-criteria. Logistic regression models were used to assess the independent roles of the hypothesized factors as predictors. An early loss of the mother among men and an early loss of the father among women independently p

Father and two children with total anomalous pulmonary venous connection.

Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) is a rare form of cyanotic congenital heart disease which, without surgical treatment, has a high mortality in the first year of life. Reports of familial recurrence of TAPVC have involved sibs, first cousins, and twins. This is the first report of TAPVC in a father and his 2 children. The implications for genetic counseling to families with this anomaly and individuals reaching adulthood after repair of TAPVC are considered.
