OBJECTIVE: Well-being is influenced by the activities we undertake. Hearing loss may reduce well-being directly through increased listening-related fatigue due to cognitive and emotional strain in challenging situations. Hearing loss and hearing device use may also indirectly impact fatigue and well-being by altering the frequency and type of daily-life activities. This review examines the available literature to help understand the relationships.
DESIGN: We provide (i) a summary of the extant literature regarding hearing loss, hearing device use and fatigue in adults, as well as regarding fa…

INTRODUCTION: Cancer is a debilitating disease with an often chronic course. One of the most taxing and prevalent sequelae in this context is cancer-related fatigue (CRF) resulting from the disease and/or associated treatments. Over the last years mindfulness-based interventions such as eurythmy therapy (ERYT), a mindful-movement therapy from anthroposophic medicine, have emerged as promising adjunct therapies in oncology. This prospective study investigated an online implementation of ERYT for CRF using a single arm repeated-measures design based on two consecutive studies.
METHOD: Study 1 c…

To study the effect of the surface properties on the bending fatigue performance of heavy-duty gear steel, the authors of this paper used the ultrasonic surface rolling process (USRP) to strengthen 20Cr2Ni4A carburized gear steel. USRP is a novel technique in which the ultrasonic technology is incorporated into the concept of conventional deep rolling. In this study, we illustrated how the surface properties and cross-section mechanical property influence the three-point bending fatigue life of the samples before and after USRP treatment. At the same time, the predicted failure probability-str…

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a common and debilitating non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD), significantly impairing patient quality of life and often observed in clinical management. Its pathophysiology involves complex interactions among dopaminergic, non-dopaminergic, and neuroinflammatory pathways. Although fatigue is highly prevalent, evidence-based treatment strategies remain limited.
METHODS: This review is based on a targeted literature search focusing on recent advances in research on PD-related fatigue. Using a combination of keywords such as "Parkinson's disease", "fatigue", "no…

Fatigue is characterized as a feeling of exhaustion or lack of energy, is a common symptom of multiple chronic illnesses and interferes with daily activities and quality of life. There is a limited availability of animal models to examine potential underlying mechanisms ultimately limiting development of potential therapeutic strategies. The primary purpose of this study was to develop a mouse model of persistent fatigue. A secondary purpose was to characterize potential measures of "fatigue-like" behaviors. An exploratory goal was to examine for immune and metabolic changes in the model. We e…

Fatigue, the experience of extreme tiredness, is common and associated with poor health outcomes and worse quality of life. The present study examines purpose in life and the likelihood of concurrent fatigue and risk of developing fatigue over time. Participants from the Health and Retirement Study (N = 6,865) reported on their purpose in life and fatigue concurrently and their fatigue again every four years up to 12 years later. Controlling for sociodemographic covariates, higher purpose in life was associated with lower likelihood of concurrent fatigue (OR = .65, 95% CI = .61, .69, p < .001)…

Fatigue fractures, also known as stress fractures, are frequent overuse injuries among athletes. They result from repetitive mechanical loads that exceed the bone's adaptive capacity, leading to microdamage and eventual fracture. Early and accurate diagnosis, primarily through magnetic resonance imaging, prevents complications and facilitates optimal recovery. This article provides a comprehensive review of the imaging of fatigue fractures.

This is a case report of a 71-year-old woman with periodic depression manifested by atypical symptoms, i.e. extreme fatigue, who was successfully treated with ECT. At the onset of symptoms, about 30 years earlier, the patient had been diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) and had been unable to walk for six years until she was successfully treated with ECT. The misdiagnosis of CFS/ME as depression is well described in the literature. The opposite - depression being diagnosed as CFS/ME - does not seem to have been previously reported.

Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a distressing side effect of cancer and treatment, affecting both patients during active treatment and survivors, negatively impacting quality of life. While its exact cause remains uncertain, various mechanisms such as immune dysfunction, HPA-axis dysfunction, and treatment toxicity are proposed. Inflammatory biomarkers of CRF have been explored in previous research, but non-inflammatory markers have not been comprehensively studied. This systematic review analysed 33 studies to identify non-inflammatory peripheral blood biomarkers associated with CRF. Promisin…

Metabolic myopathies are a group of genetic disorders that affect the normal functioning of muscles due to abnormalities in metabolic pathways. These conditions result in impaired energy production and utilization within muscle cells, leading to limitations in muscle function with concomitant occurrence of related signs and symptoms, among which fatigue is one of the most frequently reported. Understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms of muscle fatigue in these conditions is challenging for the development of an effective diagnostic and prognostic approach to test targeted therapeutic i…
