Increased production of omega-3 fatty acids protects retinal ganglion cells after optic nerve injury in mice.

Injury to the central nervous system causes progressive degeneration of injured axons, leading to loss of the neuronal bodies. Neuronal survival after injury is a prerequisite for successful regeneration of injured axons. In this study, we investigated the effects of increased production of omega-3 fatty acids and elevation of cAMP on retinal ganglion cell (RGC) survival and axonal regeneration after optic nerve (ON) crush injury in adult mice. We found that increased production of omega-3 fatty acids in mice enhanced RGC survival, but not axonal regeneration, over a period of 3 weeks after ON

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids as an angelus custos to rescue patients from NSAID-induced gastroduodenal damage.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammat ory drugs (NSAIDs) are one of the drug types frequently prescribed for their analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antithrombotic actions, but carry a risk of major gastroduodenal damage from mild erosive changes to serious ulceration leading to fatal outcomes. From the long history of willow tree bark and its extracts being applied for the relief of pain and fever, the synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid, the development of selective cyclooxygenase 2 inhibitors (coxibs), and the identification of a G-protein-coupled receptor for prostaglandin, the popular combination reg

Current evidence and future directions for research with omega-3 fatty acids and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Nutritional insufficiencies of nutrients such as omega-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs), vitamins and minerals have been linked to suboptimal developmental outcomes including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although the predominant treatment is currently psychostimulant medications, randomized clinical trials with omega-3 HUFAs have reported small-to-modest effects in reducing symptoms of ADHD in children despite arguable individual methodological and design misgivings. RECENT FINDINGS: This review presents, discusses and critically evaluates data a

Dietary interventions (plant sterols, stanols, omega-3 fatty acids, soy protein and dietary fibers) for familial hypercholesterolaemia.

BACKGROUND: A cholesterol-lowering diet and several other dietary interventions have been suggested as a management approach either independently or as an adjuvant to drug therapy in children and adults with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH). However, a consensus has yet to be reached on the most appropriate dietary treatment. Plant sterols are commonly used in FH although patients may know them by other names like phytosterols or stanols. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether a cholesterol-lowering diet is more effective in reducing ischaemic heart disease and lowering cholesterol than no dietary

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids enrichment alters performance and immune response in infectious bursal disease challenged broilers.

BACKGROUND: Infectious bursal disease (IBD) results in economic loss due to mortality, reduction in production efficiency and increasing the usage of antibiotics. This study was carried out to investigate the modulatory roles of dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) enrichment in immune response and performance of IBD challenged broiler chickens. METHODS: A total of 300 day old male broiler chicks were assigned to four dietary n-3 PUFA ascending levels as the treatment groups (T1: 0.5; T2: 8.0; T3: 11.5; T4: 16.5) using combinations of tuna oil and sunflower oil. All diets were isoca

Estimating health and economic benefits from using prescription omega-3 fatty acids in patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia.

Patients with increased triglyceride levels compared to those with normal levels are at higher risk for coronary heart disease. In patients with severe (≥500 mg/dl) hypertriglyceridemia (SHTG), clinical trials have demonstrated that prescription ω-3 fatty acids (P-OM3s) 4 g/day can decrease triglyceride levels by 45%. However, the precise health and economic benefits of decreasing SHTG with P-OM3 are unknown. We used the previously validated Archimedes model to simulate a 20-year trial involving subjects 45 to 75 years old with SHTG. The trial consisted of an intervention arm (P-OM3 4 g/day) a

Effects of omega-3 fatty acids on serum lipids, lipoprotein (a), and hematologic factors in hemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Lipid abnormalities, especially high serum lipoprotein (a) [Lp (a)] concentration, and anemia are two major causes of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) in hemodialysis patients. Therefore, this study was designed to investigate the effects of marine omega-3 fatty acids on serum lipids, Lp (a), and hematologic factors in hemodialysis patients. METHODS: Thirty-four hemodialysis patients were randomly assigned to either omega-3 fatty acid supplement or placebo group. Patients in the omega-3 fatty acids group received 2080 mg marine omega-3 fatty acids, daily for 10 weeks, whereas the pl

Methylmercury and omega-3 fatty acids: co-occurrence of dietary sources with emphasis on fish and shellfish.

Despite many claims of broad benefits, especially for in utero development, derived from the consumption of fish as a source of omega-3 fatty acids, individual species of fish and shellfish provide substantially varied levels of these fatty acids. Likewise, mean methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations for fish and shellfish species differ by greater than an order of magnitude. Consideration of within-species variability would increase this variation farther. Exposures to both MeHg and to the omega-3 fatty acids reflect dietary choices including species consumed, frequency of consumption, and porti

The Omega-3 Fatty Acids Eicosapentaenoic Acid and Docosahexaenoic Acid Enhance the Effects of Temozolomide Chemotherapy in Glioblastoma Cells.

Overcoming resistance to temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy is a major challenge in glioma treatment. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can interfere with drug resistance in glioma but their mechanism of action is poorly understood. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) effects were assessed using proliferation and clonogenic assays, adhesion and migration assays, glucose and lactate metabolism, detection of lipid droplets, acidic vesicles, reactive oxygen species, and phosphokinase proteome analysis. EPA or DHA caused significant reductions in cell number, colony formation,

Altered erythrocyte membrane fatty acid profile in typical Rett syndrome: effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation.

This study mainly aims at examining the erythrocyte membrane fatty acid (FAs) profile in Rett syndrome (RTT), a genetically determined neurodevelopmental disease. Early reports suggest a beneficial effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFAs) on disease severity in RTT. A total of 24 RTT patients were assigned to ω-3 PUFAs-containing fish oil for 12 months in a randomized controlled study (average DHA and EPA doses of 72.9, and 117.1mg/kgb.w./day, respectively). A distinctly altered FAs profile was detectable in RTT, with deficient ω-6 PUFAs, increased saturated FAs and reduced t

Does a High Ratio of Dietary Omega-6/Omega-3 Fatty Acids Increase the Risk of Helicobacter pylori Infection? A Case-Control Study.

Helicobacter pylori infection is the cause of 90% of non-cardia gastric cancer. Several dietary elements have been identified as possible contributors to H. pylori infection and its advancement through various pathways. Based on the anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial effects of a diet low in omega-6 and high in omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), this study aimed to assess the ratio of dietary omega-6 to omega-3 PUFAs and the risk of developing H. pylori. The present case-control study was conducted on 150 cases with H. pylori infection and 302 controls. The omega-6 to omega-3 ratio

Efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids in the treatment of borderline personality disorder: a study of the association with valproic acid.

Omega-3 fatty acids have received increasing interest due to their effects in stabilizing plasmatic membranes and regulating cell signaling. The efficacy of omega-3 fatty acids in psychiatric disorders, in particular mood disorders, has been studied. There have been two trials on eicosapentanoic acid (EPA) and docosahexanoic acid (DHA) in the treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD). The present 12-week controlled trial aimed to assess the efficacy of the association of EPA and DHA with valproic acid, compared to single valproic acid, in 43 consecutive BPD outpatients. Comparing Soy and Milk Protein Regulation of Hepatic Omega-3 Fatty Acid Biosynthesis.

The omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have numerous benefits, including strong anti-inflammatory and triglyceride-lowering properties. EPA and DHA are primarily obtained by consuming fatty fish; however, they are also endogenously synthesized primarily in the liver from α-linolenic acid (ALA) through a pathway mediated by the delta-6 desaturase (D6D) enzyme. Previous reports in rodents and humans suggest that dietary proteins such as soy and dairy may impact this pathway differently. The primary aim was to investigate the effects of diets containing

The effect of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation on exercise-induced muscle damage.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) results in transient muscle inflammation, strength loss, muscle soreness and may cause subsequent exercise avoidance. Omega-3 (n-3) supplementation may minimise EIMD via its anti-inflammatory properties, however, its efficacy remains unclear. METHODS: Healthy males (n = 14, 25.07 ± 4.05 years) were randomised to 3 g/day n-3 supplementation (N-3, n = 7) or placebo (PLA, n = 7). Following 4 weeks supplementation, a downhill running protocol (60 min, 65% V̇O2max, - 10% gradient) was performed. Creatine kinase (CK), interleukin (IL)-6 and tumour n
