Dietary L-arginine supplementation enhances growth performance, intestinal antioxidative capacity, immunity and modulates gut microbiota in yellow-feathered chickens.

This study investigated the effects of dietary Arginine (Arg) on performance, intestinal antioxidative capacity, immunity, and gut microbiota in Chinese yellow-feathered chickens. One thousand two hundred 1-day-old female Qingyuan partridge chickens were randomly assigned to 5 groups with 6 replicates of 40 birds each. Chickens were fed diets with 5 levels of total Arg (8.5, 9.7, 10.9, 12.1, and 13.3 g/kg) without antibiotics for 30 d. The ADFI, ADG, and feed conversion ratio were improved with dietary Arg levels (P < 0.05). The proportions of CD3+ and CD4+/CD8+ lymphocytes responded in a line

Transcriptional profiling of liver in riboflavin-deficient chicken embryos explains impaired lipid utilization, energy depletion, massive hemorrhaging, and delayed feathering.

BACKGROUND: A strain of Leghorn chickens (rd/rd), unable to produce a functional riboflavin-binding protein, lays riboflavin-deficient eggs, in which all embryos suddenly die at mid-incubation (days 13-15). This malady, caused by riboflavin deficiency, leads to excessive lipid accumulation in liver, impaired β-oxidation of lipid, and severe hypoglycemia prior to death. We have used high-density chicken microarrays for time-course transcriptional scans of liver in chicken embryos between days 9-15 during this riboflavin-deficiency-induced metabolic catastrophe. For comparison, half of rd/rd emb

Clinical beak and feather disease virus infection in wild juvenile eastern rosellas of New Zealand; biosecurity implications for wildlife care facilities.

CASE HISTORY: Four juvenile eastern rosellas (Platycercus eximius) were admitted to two separate wildlife care facilities in the Auckland region by members of the public. They had missing or dystrophic wing and tail feathers that rendered them flightless, suggestive of beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) infection. Two were subject to euthanasia after failing to re-grow their feathers, with samples taken for histopathology and PCR analysis. Blood samples were obtained from the other two birds at the time of examination, however these individuals were lost to follow up. PATHOLOGICAL AND MOLE…

A simple and cost-effective denaturation-reannealing multiplex PCR (drmPCR) method for discriminating late-feathering genotypes in male Korean indigenous breed chickens.

Feather-based autosexing visually distinguishes the sex of day-old chicks to optimize commercial poultry production. Crossbreeding early-feathering (EF) males (Zk+/Zk+) with late-feathering (LF) females (ZK/W) yields LF male and EF female progeny for rapid identification. However, maintaining this system requires accurately distinguishing homozygous (ZK/ZK) form heterozygous (ZK/Zk+) LF males in parental lines. Currently, the reliance on specialized equipment limits the routine use of quantitative genotyping for this screening in large breeding populations. To overcome this limitation, this st

The feather mites of the hoatzin Opisthocomus hoazin (Müller) (Aves: Opisthocomiformes), with the description of two new genera and six new species (Acari: Analgoidea, Pterolichoidea).

Six new species and two new genera of feather mites are described from the hoatzin Opisthocomus hoazin (Müller) (Opisthocomiformes: Opisthoc … terolichoidea). They represent two morpho-ecological groups: (1) mites inhabiting the wing and tail feathers, and (2) mites living in downy and body contour feathers. We hypothesize that these mites represent a native feather mite fauna of the hoatzin, inherited from its ancestors and existing on this bird for a long time. The controversial and unresolved …

Novel goose parvovirus as a major risk factor for red skin and bristle feather syndrome in meat ducks: Epidemiological associations with duck circovirus and reovirus.

In recent years, a disease characterized by dorsal skin reddening and feather development disorder, termed "red skin and bristle feather syndrome" (RSBFS), has emerged in meat duck farms in China, resulting in substantial economic losses. To clarify the major etiological risk factor, their epidemiological patterns, and molecular characteristics, we collected 300 clinical samples from symptomatic and asymptomatic ducks across eight major duck-producing provinces in China between February and July 2025. Multipathogen screening was conducted using quantitative real-time PCR, followed by phylogene

Research note: Transient behavioral effects of feed restriction in a white feathered laying hen pullet strain - Assessment of frustration and locomotor energy expenditure.

Quantitative feed restriction is used to effectively manipulate layer pullet growth trajectories in research and rarely in commercial practice. In this study, we asked whether this intervention impairs pullet welfare or affects locomotor energy expenditure. Pullets were raised in furnished floor pens in a split-plot design: Two ages at photostimulation (18 weeks: early-PS vs 20 weeks: late-PS) with two feeding regimens each (ad libitum: AL vs 20%-restricted: R) between 12 and 21 weeks. Home pen video recordings were annotated for four behavioral categories: abnormal pecking, aggression, high-e

Effects of Fluorescent Lighting Versus Sunlight Exposure on Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin D, and Feather Destructive Behavior in Hispaniolan Amazon Parrots (Amazona ventralis).

Low exposure to ultraviolet light, and resulting vitamin D deficiency, has recently been linked to autism spectrum disorder in people. Captive psittacine birds that exhibit feather destructive behavior share similarities with people affected by autism spectrum disorder, such as repetitive (stereotypies) and self-harming behaviors. The metabolic and psychological effects of housing pet parrots indoors without ultraviolet B lighting are not typically considered in animal husbandry or veterinary care. Calcifediol (serum vitamin D), ionized calcium, and ionized magnesium levels were compared betwe

Impact of a 15% spirulina (Limnospira platensis) dietary inclusion on productive performance and meat traits in naked neck and fully feathered slow-growing broiler strains.

Global population is rising, leading to higher demand for meat and concerns on environmental and economic impacts of conventional feedstuffs that corn and soybean meal have. Recently there has been a shift towards more sustainable feedstuffs such as Spirulina (Limnospira platensis) due to its nutritional value and ability to be produced locally. Consumer awareness prompts shifts towards free range poultry production but presents environmental challenges due to climate change. The naked neck (Na) gene, which reduces feather coverage, and enhances growth under adverse conditions offers a possibl

Multi-level comparisons of cloacal, skin, feather and nest-associated microbiota suggest considerable influence of horizontal acquisition on the microbiota assembly of sympatric woodlarks and skylarks.

BACKGROUND: Working toward a general framework to understand the role of microbiota in animal biology requires the characterisation of animal-associated microbial communities and identification of the evolutionary and ecological factors shaping their variation. In this study, we described the microbiota in the cloaca, brood patch skin and feathers of two species of birds and the microbial communities in their nest environment. We compared patterns of resemblance between these microbial communities at different levels of biological organisation (species, individual, body part) and investigated …
