Quantification of nutritive sucking among preterm and full-term infants.

PURPOSE: We developed summaries of oral bottle-feeding skills among preterm (<37 gestational weeks) and full-term (≥37 gestational weeks) infants using a mechanical device (Orometer) to measure intraoral pressure changes, with accompanying automated software and analytics. We then compared the rates of change in feeding skills over several weeks (feeding trends) between preterm and full-term infants. We also compared group means at 40 weeks post menstrual age (PMA). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Healthy full-term and preterm infants capable of oral feeding were recruited from the Pediatric Outpatient

Associations of feeding and delivery modes with the risk of otitis media with effusion in children: A cross-sectional study.

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is predominantly observed in children under 6 years of age and can lead to hearing loss or even severe complications, impacting speech, and cognitive development. While the benefits of breastfeeding and natural birth in enhancing infant immunity and cognitive abilities are globally recognized, their effects on OME have been scarcely reported. This study investigates the relationship between feeding methods and delivery modes with OME in children, aiming to identify potential associative factors that may inform health education and early risk awareness, where me…

Misplacement of a nasogastric feeding tube: a case report.

Nasogastric tube (NGT) insertion is widely used for enteral feeding. After blind insertion of a NGT, confirmation of correct placement prior to feeding using reliable methods is mandatory. NGT misplacement in the respiratory tract can lead to serious complications. We report a case of a patient with dysphagia and malnutrition that needed enteral feeding as nutritional support. A NGT was blindly inserted, and its gastric position was confirmed through air insufflation and epigastric auscultation. Enteral feeding was initiated. Few hours later, the patient presented with respiratory distress. An

Early oral feeding vs. traditional feeding in patients undergoing elective open bowel surgery-a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: This prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare the safety, tolerability and outcome of early oral feeding vs. traditional feeding in patients undergoing elective open bowel surgery. METHODS: A total of 120 consecutive patients who underwent elective open bowel surgeries were randomized into either early feeding (n = 60) or traditional feeding group (n = 60). Patients in the early feeding group were started on oral fluids on post-operative day 1, while those in the traditional feeding group were started orals after the resolution of ileus. Patient characterist

Minimal enteral nutrition during neonatal hypothermia treatment for perinatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy is safe and feasible.

AIM: The safety and efficacy of enteral feeding during hypothermia treatment following hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy has not been studied before, resulting in variations in practice. Our study compared the benefits and safety of both early minimal and delayed enteral feeding during hypothermia treatment. METHODS: Our retrospective cohort study, from January 2009 to December 2011, compared a Swedish cohort, who received early enteral feeding during hypothermia, and a UK cohort, who received delayed enteral feeding. RESULTS: In Sweden (n = 51), enteral feeds were initiated at a median of 23

Antroduodenal motility and feeding outcome among neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation survivors.

OBJECTIVES: Feeding difficulties are common among survivors of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). In this study, we characterized antroduodenal motor patterns and feeding outcomes among 10 ECMO survivors. METHODS: Intestinal motor patterns were recorded in 10 ECMO survivors within 48 hours of the initiation of enteral feeding. Subsequent feeding outcomes were tracked until discharge. We compared the motor patterns of infants achieving full oral feedings by 1 month postnatal age with those who did not achieve full oral feedings by 1 month postnatal age. RESULTS: In infants failing to

Comparative analysis of glass and Hemotek membrane feeding systems for malaria transmission research.

BACKGROUND: Glass membrane feeders are used in malaria research for artificial blood feeding. This study investigates the use of Hemotek membrane feeders as a standardized alternative feeding system. METHODS: Hemotek feeders were compared with glass feeders by assessing mosquito feeding rate, imbibed blood meal volume and Plasmodium falciparum infection intensity on mosquito guts. RESULTS: While mosquito feeding rate and blood meal volume were comparable between Hemotek and glass feeders, a loss in transmission was observed using the Hemotek feeder with a conventional collagen membrane. Fluoroscopically guided percutaneous gastrostomy: current status.

The authors review the current status of fluoroscopically guided percutaneous gastrostomy (FGPG). The indications for this procedure have been expanded since the technique was first described over a decade ago. Ther are few contraindications to FGPG, although modifications are required in some situations. The procedure involves placing a feeding tube into the stomach by a modified Seldinger technique. According to the literature, most interventionalists do not routinely employ gastropexy. The insertion of gastrojejunostomy feeding tubes rather than gastrostomy feeding tubes to reduce gastroeso

Milk temperature reducing necrotizing enterocolitis in very preterm infants: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a common and serious gastrointestinal condition among preterm infants. Factors such as infection, inflammation, and improper feeding are believed to contribute to its onset, but its precise pathophysiology remains unclear. Cold exposure, including feeding at low temperatures, has been associated with increased risks of NEC, yet the direct relationship between feeding temperature and NEC development remains underexplored. This study aims to assess the impact of thermostatic versus standard feeding on the incidence of stage 2 or higher NEC in very p

The Intervention Nurses Start Infants Growing on Healthy Trajectories (INSIGHT) responsive parenting intervention for firstborns impacts feeding of secondborns.

BACKGROUND: The Intervention Nurses Start Infant Growing on Healthy Trajectories (INSIGHT) study's responsive parenting (RP) intervention, initiated in early infancy, prevented the use of nonresponsive, controlling feeding practices and promoted use of structure-based feeding among first-time parents compared with controls. OBJECTIVES: We sought to examine the spillover effect of the RP intervention on maternal feeding practices with their secondborn (SB) infants enrolled in an observational-only study, SIBSIGHT, and to test the moderating effect of spacing of births. METHODS: SB infants of

Quality improvement initiative to decrease time to full feeds and central line utilization among infants born less than or equal to 32 0/7 weeks through compliance with standardized feeding guidelines.

BACKGROUND: There are emerging evidences that support more aggressive feeding advancement among preterm infants. Our NICU had conservative feeding advancement guidelines that delayed enteral feeding and prolonged central line use. We aimed to reduce time to full feeds among infants born ≤ 32 0/7 weeks from 12.8 days to 8 days. METHODS: A multidisciplinary team implemented evidence-based feeding guidelines using quality improvement methods. Days to full enteral feeds, central line days, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) rates, and extrauterine growth restriction (EUGR) rates were analyzed. RESU

Observations of feeding practices of US parents of young children with Down syndrome.

Parental behaviours influence food acceptance in young children, but few studies have measured these behaviours using observational methods, especially among children with Down syndrome (CWDS). The overall goal of this study was to understand parent feeding practices used during snack time with young CWDS (N = 111, aged 11-58 months). A coding scheme was developed to focus on feeding practices used by parents of CWDS from a structured home-use test involving tasting variously textured snack products. Behavioural coding was used to categorise parental feeding practices and quantify their freque

Patients' experience of enteral feeding following (chemo) radiotherapy for head and neck cancer: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Enteral feeding is commonly required during radiotherapy treatment for head and neck cancer. Only limited qualitative research into head and neck cancer patients' experiences of enteral tube feeding has been undertaken. The aim of this qualitative study was to evaluate patients' experiences of EF and the surrounding decision making process. METHODS: Semi-structured, face-to face interviews were conducted with ten patients who had completed (chemo)radiotherapy/radiotherapy for head and neck cancer at a cancer centre in the North of England. Interviews were recorded, transcri

Comparison of Efficacy Between Paladai and Syringe Feeding in Stable Preterm Neonates-A Randomized Control Trial.

Background: Feeding abilities of preterm neonates differ based on their gestational and postnatal maturity. Maturity of sucking pattern and improved coordination between sucking and swallowing and breathing, which is seen in babies with a gestation of 32 weeks onward, makes trial of oral feeds more successful in these babies. The oral feeds can be given either with a cup and spoon or a paladai. However, we observed that the milk spilt during feeding was an issue due to a wider spout of the paladai. Feeding through syringe is practiced in many neonatal units. However, there is a lack of scienti

Supporting Feeding of Late Preterm Infants in the Hospital: A Quality Improvement Project.

BACKGROUND: Feeding difficulty is the most common cause of delayed hospital discharge and readmission of late preterm infants. Frequent and adequate feedings from birth are protective against dehydration, hypoglycemia, and jaundice. The National Perinatal Association's feeding guidelines provide the foundation for late preterm infant standards of care. Feeding at least every 3 hours promotes nutritional status and neurologic development. One feeding assessment every 12 hours during the hospital stay can ensure quality of infant feeding. PROBLEM: At a large urban hospital, medical record revie
