Iron Transformation and Its Role in Phosphorus Immobilization in a UCT-MBR with Vivianite Formation Enhancement.

The formation of vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O) in iron (Fe)-dosed wastewater treatment facilities has the potential to develop into an economically feasible method of phosphorus (P) recovery. In this work, a long-term steady FeIII-dosed University of Cape Town process-membrane bioreactor (UCT-MBR) system was investigated to evaluate the role of Fe transformations in immobilizing P via vivianite crystallization. The highest fraction of FeII, to total Fe (Fetot), was observed in the anaerobic chamber, revealing that a redox condition suitable for FeIII reduction was established by improving operati

Functional redundancy imparts process stability to acidic Fe(II)-oxidizing microbial reactors.

In previous work, lab-scale reactors designed to study microbial Fe(II) oxidation rates at low pH were found to have stable rates under a wide range of pH and Fe(II) concentrations. Since the stirred reactor environment eliminates many of the temporal and spatial variations that promote high diversity among microbial populations in nature, we were surprised that the reactors supported multiple taxa presumed to be autotrophic Fe(II) oxidizers based on their phylogeny. Metagenomic analyses of the reactor communities revealed differences in the metabolic potential of these taxa with respect to Fe

Kinetics of cyanide and carbon monoxide dissociation from ferrous human haptoglobin:hemoglobin(II) complexes.

Haptoglobin (Hp) counterbalances the adverse effects of extra-erythrocytic hemoglobin (Hb) trapping the αβ dimers of Hb. In turn, the Hp:Hb complexes display heme-based reactivity. Here, the kinetics of cyanide and carbon monoxide dissociation from ferrous-ligated Hp:Hb complexes are reported at pH 7.0 and 20.0 °C. Cyanide dissociation from Hp1-1:Hb(II)-CN- and Hp2-2:Hb-CN- has been followed upon the dithionite-mediated conversion of ferric to ferrous-ligated Hp:Hb complexes. Values of kon for the dithionite-mediated reduction of Hp1-1:Hb(III)-CN- and Hp2-2:Hb(III)-CN- are (7.3 ± 1.1) × 106 M-

Ion exchange removal of Cu(II), Fe(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) from acid extracted sewage sludge - Resin screening in weak acid media.

A shortage of phosphate rock resources has led to a focus on the use of sewage sludge as a fertiliser. One factor preventing the unlimited application of sewage sludge in agriculture is the heavy metal content. This work looks at a process where weak acid leaching of sewage sludge would be coupled to ion exchange (IX) for heavy metal ion removal. IX offers an effective method for the recovery of these metals from a leachate. This study presents the pH performance of six selected IX resins in extracting Cu2+, Fe2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ from acetic, lactic and citric acid media simulated weak acid leac

1H-1,2,3-triazole tethered isatin-ferrocene conjugates: Synthesis and in vitro antimalarial evaluation.

1H-1,2,3-triazole tethered isatin-ferrocene conjugates were synthesized and evaluated for their antiplasmodial activities against chloroquine-susceptible (3D7) and chloroquine-resistant (W2) strains of Plasmodium falciparum. The conjugates 5f and 5h with an optimum combination of electron-withdrawing halogen substituent at C-5 position of isatin ring and a propyl chain, introduced as linker, proved to be most potent and non-cytotoxic among the series with IC50 values of 3.76 and 4.58 μM against 3D7 and W2 strains, respectively.

[Simulation study on behaviors of sediment phosphorus affected by iron ion].

A simulation study has been done that vertical transport of conduct of phosphorus in sediment affected by iron inorganic salt. The results showed: when 10 mL or 50 mL of 1 mol/L FeCl3 solution were added to the simulation system respectively, phosphorus content in sediments was reduced, however, 30 mL of 1 mol/L FeCl3 solution was added, phosphorus content of sediments increased. Appropriate quantum iron inorganic salt will prevent phosphorus in sediment released to the water, otherwise, iron ion quantum added is too high or too low, to a certain extent, will promote the release of phosphorus

Evaluation of the treatment of chromite ore processing residue by ferrous sulfate and asphalt.

The effectiveness of the treatment of chromite ore processing residue (COPR) with ferrous sulfate and encapsulation into asphalt were explored separately and in combination. The asphalt treatment was conducted by mixing COPR or ferrous sulfate pretreated COPR with varying amounts of asphalt. To assess the efficacy of the treatment, the leachability of toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) total chromium (Cr) from all treated samples was determined for curing periods up to 16 months. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analyses were also performed to evaluate the Cr(6+) con

Evidence for a basalt-free surface on Mercury and implications for internal heat.

Microwave and mid-infrared observations reveal that Mercury's surface contains less FeO + TiO2 and at least as much feldspar as the lunar highlands. The results are compatible with the high albedo (brightness) of Mercury's surface at visible wavelengths in suggesting a rock and soil composition that is devoid of basalt, the primary differentiate of terrestrial mantles. The occurrence of a basalt-free, highly differentiated crust is in accord with recent models of the planet's thermal evolution and suggests that Mercury has retained a hot interior as a result of a combination of inefficient man

Electron donor concentration- and pH-dependent, biogenic Fe(II)-facilitated biotransformation of ferrihydrite to various iron oxide nanomaterials by Shewanella sp. strain HN-41.

Dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria catalyze the biotransformation of ferrihydrite into iron oxide nanomaterials by producing aqueous Fe(II), which subsequently transfers electrons to ferrihydrite. However, the specific environmental factors that determine the biotransformation of ferrihydrite to distinct iron oxide nanomaterials remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the biotransformation of ferrihydrite to various iron oxide nanomaterials using the iron-reducing bacterium Shewanella sp. strain HN-41, depending on lactate concentrations from 0.1 to 10 mM at pH 6.8 and 7.5.

Multivalent Cu sites in CuFe2O4@Cu@C synergistically enhance electrochemical detection and degradation efficiency of organophosphorus pesticides.

Pesticides are omnipresent environmental pollutants negatively influencing on human health and ecosystem, emphasizing the urgent need for high-efficiency detection and degradation treatment measures. Herein, we propose an electrochemical detection and catalytic degradation dual system based on a multivalent Cu-based catalyst (CuFe2O4@Cu@C) that utilizes Cu-FcDA MOF as a sacrificial template. Experimental results suggested that enhanced detection and degradation efficiency originates from synergistic effect of multivalent Cu sites, that can significantly promote electron transfer and enrich act

Contrasted redox-dependent structural control on Fe isotope fractionation during its adsorption onto and assimilation by heterotrophic soil bacteria.

Despite the importance of structural control on metal stable isotope fractionation in inorganic and abiotic systems, the link between metal structural changes and related isotopic fractionation during reactions with organic surfaces and live cells remains poorly established. We conducted reversible adsorption of Fe(II) and Fe(III) on the surface of exopolysaccharide (EPS)-rich and EPS-poor Pseudomonas aureofaciens, and we allowed Fe intracellular uptake by growing cells. We analyzed the Fe isotopic composition of the remaining fluid and cell biomass, and compared the isotopic fractionation dur

Transforming waste brake pads from automobiles into Nano-Catalyst: Synergistic Fe-C-Cu triple sites for efficient fenton-like oxidation of organic pollutants.

The arbitrary disposal of used brake pads from motor vehicles has resulted in severe heavy metal pollution and resource wastage, highlighting the urgent need to explore the significant untapped potential of these discarded materials. In this study, The in-situ growth of highly dispersed Fe2O3 nanocrystals was achieved by simple oxidation annealing of brake pad debris(BPD). Interestingly, Cu remained unoxidized and acted as a "valence state transformation bridge of Fe2O3" to construct the "triple Fe-C-Cu sites". The Fenton degradation experiment of pollutants was conducted under constant temper

Two Iron(II), α-Ketoglutarate-Dependent Enzymes Encoded by the PPZ Gene Cluster of Metarhizium majus Enable Production of 8-Hydroxyperamine.

Entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium majus contains the nine-gene PPZ cluster, with ppzA, encoding a peramine-producing nonribosomal peptide synthetase, as the central component. In this work, the roles of two α-ketoglutarate, iron-dependent oxygenases encoded by the PPZ genes ppzC and ppzD were elucidated. PpzD was found to produce both trans-4-hydroxy-l-proline and trans-3-hydroxy-l-proline in a 13.1:1 ratio, yielding a key precursor for peramine biosynthesis. PpzC was found to act directly on peramine, yielding the novel analogue 8-hydroxyperamine.

Salvianolic acid B influences the ferritin function in iron(II)/iron(III) transformation and iron chelation.

BACKGROUND: Ferritin is a cage-like iron storage protein and can regulate the iron balance of life. It can be developed as a new type of iron supplement, while its function may be influenced by certain food bioactive components. To evaluate the effects of the typical food biomolecules, such as phenolic acid, on the physicochemical property of ferritin are of great importance to clarify the ferritin function in maintaining iron balance. RESULTS: In this study, the interaction mechanism of ferritin with iron ions and salvianolic acid B (SalB) was investigated. The complex formed by SalB and iro

Efficient removal of naphthenic acids from real petroleum wastewater by natural pyrite activated persulfate system.

The petroleum wastewater (PWW) contains a diverse range of recalcitrant organic contaminants. Of particular concern is the removal of naphthenic acids (NAs) due to the high toxicity and persistence. Persulfate (PS) based oxidation processes have shown promising in treating refractory wastewater, while the high costs of prepared catalysts limited their widespread implementation. This study aims to develop a cost-effective natural pyrite activated PS system for PWW treatment. The removal of NAs by pyrite/PS system was initially investigated. More than 90% of cyclohexanoic acid (CHA), a model NA,

Coupling of Dissolved Organic Matter Molecular Fractionation with Iron and Sulfur Transformations during Sulfidation-Reoxidation Cycling.

Iron (oxyhydr)oxides and organic matter (OM) are intimately associated in natural environments, and their fate might be linked to sulfur during sulfidation-reoxidation cycling. However, the coupling of DOM molecular fractionation with Fe and S transformations following a full sulfidation-reoxidation cycle remains poorly understood. Here, we reacted Fh and Fh-OM associations with S(-II) anaerobically and then exposed the sulfidic systems to air. S(-II) preferentially reacted with Fh to form inorganic S (e.g., mackinawite, S0, and S22-) over being incorporated into OM as organic S and therefore

Atomic-Level Structural Differences between Fe(III) Coprecipitates Generated by the Addition of Fe(III) Coagulants and by the Oxidation of Fe(II) Coagulants Determine Their Coagulation Behavior in Phosphate and DOM Removal.

In situ Fe(III) coprecipitation from Fe2+ oxidation is a widespread phenomenon in natural environments and water treatment processes. Studies have shown the superiority of in situ Fe(III) (formed by in situ oxidation of a Fe(II) coagulant) over ex situ Fe(III) (using a Fe(III) coagulant directly) in coagulation, but the reasons remain unclear due to the uncertain nature of amorphous structures. Here, we utilized an in situ Fe(III) coagulation process, oxidizing the Fe(II) coagulant by potassium permanganate (KMnO4), to treat phosphate-containing surface water and analyzed differences between i

Labile Fe(III) phase mediates the electron transfer from Fe(II,III) (oxyhydr)oxides to carbon tetrachloride.

Labile Fe(III) phase (includes Fe(III)aq, Fe(III)ads, or Fe(III)s species) is an important intermediate during the interaction between Fe(II) and Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides, but how does labile Fe(III) influence the electron transfer from Fe(II) to oxidant environmental pollutant during this Fe(II)-Fe(III) interaction is unclear. In this work, the dynamic change of Fe(II,III) (oxyhydr)oxides at the same time scale is simulated by synthesizing Fe(III)-Fe(II)-I (Fe(III)+NaOH+Fe(II)+NaOH) with different Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratios. CCl4 is used as a convenient probe to test the reduction kinetics of mixed

Hematite-promoted nitrate-reducing Fe(II) oxidation by Acidovorax sp. strain BoFeN1: Roles of mineral catalysis and cell encrustation.

Although nitrate-reducing Fe(II) oxidizing (NRFO) bacteria can grow sustainably in natural environments, numerous laboratory studies suggested that cell encrustation-induced metabolism limitations and cell death occurred more seriously in the absence of natural minerals. Hence, a study on how natural minerals could affect NRFO is warranted. This study examined the impact of hematite on NRFO by Acidovorax sp. BoFeN1 with different electron donors (acetate and Fe(II), acetate alone, and Fe(II) alone) and with nitrate as an electron acceptor. When acetate and Fe(II) were used as the electron dono
