High Frequency Ultrasound for the Analysis of Fetal and Placental Development In Vivo.

Ultrasound imaging is a widespread method used to detect organ anomalies and tumors in human and animal tissues. The method is non-invasive, harmless, and painless, and the application is easy, fast, and can be done anywhere, even with mobile devices. During pregnancy, ultrasound imaging is standardly used to closely monitor fetal development. The technique is important to assess intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), a pregnancy complication with short- and long-term health consequences for both the mother and fetus. Understanding the process of IUGR is indispensable for developing effective…

Review: The blood-brain barrier; protecting the developing fetal brain.

While placental function is fundamental to normal fetal development, the blood-brain barrier provides a second checkpoint critical to protecting the fetal brain and ensuring healthy brain development. The placenta is considered the key barrier between the mother and fetus, regulating delivery of essential nutrients, removing waste as well as protecting the fetus from potentially noxious substances. However, disturbances to the maternal environment and subsequent adaptations to placental function may render the placenta ineffective for providing a suitable environment for the developing fetus a…

Fetal Development of the Bovine Uterus: A Light Microscopy and Immunohistochemical Study.

Important steps during the prenatal development of the bovine uterus are described using conventional hematoxylin-eosin staining of fetuses from different developmental stages [crown-rump length (CRL) 9.2-94.0 cm]. Additionally, a number of intermediate filaments (keratin 7, 8, 14, 18, 19; and vimentin), the basement membrane protein laminin, smooth-muscle marker (SMA), and S100 were studied to further characterize certain differentiation processes. During early development, the uterine epithelium is simple or (pseudo)stratified with bud-like protrusions. Developing caruncles can be observed i

Spatiotemporal expression of BMP7 in the development of anorectal malformations in fetal rats.

The aim of this study was to determine the expression patterns of bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) during anorectal development in normal rat embryos and in embryos with anorectal malformations (ARM), and to investigate the possible role of BMP7 in the pathogenesis of ARM. ARM was induced by treating rat embryos with ethylenethiourea on the 10th gestational day (GD10). Embryos were harvested by Cesarean delivery and the spatiotemporal expression of BMP7 was evaluated in normal (n=168) and ARM embryos (n=171) from GD13 to GD16 using immunohistochemistry staining and western blot analysis. Immunohistochemical localization of barx2 in the developing fetal mouse submandibular glands.

The development of mouse submandibular gland (SMG) begins at embryonic day 11.5-12 (E11.5-12), during which successive rounds of epithelial clefting and branching create complex epithelial tree-like structures. Homeobox genes regulate place-dependent morphogenesis, including epithelial-mesenchymal interactions, and control the expression patterns of signaling molecules. The Barx2 containing Homeobox exerts several key roles in development. Some studies have shown that the Barx2 plays important roles in the epithelial-mesenchymal interactions of organogenesis. However, the mechanisms of Barx2 a

[Influence of vitamin D on fertility and fetal development--review of literature].

Cholecalciferol was qualified by FDA (Food and Drug Administration) into the A category if administered in recommended doses and to the D ca … zed. Moreover, some data concerning the influence of vitamin D administered during the pregnancy on fetal development are often ambiguous. All these facts are the reason why recommendations of vitamin D supplementation in pregnancy still remain uncertain and need thorough investigation.

[Recent developments in fetal surgery. Technical, organizational and ethical considerations].

Progress in prenatal diagnosis has led to more frequent detection of fetal abnormalities which, if left untreated, would be fatal or cause severe disabilities despite optimal postnatal care. Intrauterine surgery is possible in selected cases. Most procedures involve microendoscopy with local or regional analgesia. Fetal analgesia is indicated for procedures that are directly invasive for the fetus. Surgical treatment of twin-to-twin transfusion is so far the only example of successful fetal therapy, as demonstrated in a randomized controlled trial. The most severe forms of congenital diaphragm

Transcription factor expression in the developing human fetal endocrine pancreas.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Morphological changes that occur during pancreatic endocrine cell differentiation have been shown in rodent systems to be dependent on sequential alterations in transcription factor expression. However, similar data for humans have been limited. The aim of the present study was to provide a connection between pancreatic morphology, transcription factor gene expression and protein localisation during human fetal development. METHODS: Human fetal pancreases were examined at early (8-12 weeks of fetal age), middle (14-16 weeks) and late (19-21 weeks) stages, using immunohistolog…

[Effects of estrogens on the development of the testis during fetal and neonatal life].

Estrogens are classically known to play a major role in female reproduction but there is now compelling evidence that they may also be involved in the regulation of male reproductive function. In humans, a decrease in sperm count and an increase in the incidences of testicular cancer, cryptorchidism and hypospadia have been observed in many countries over the last 50 years. Male reproductive alterations were also observed in wildlife. Such male reproductive disorders have been attributed to the increase in concentration of xenobiotics, and of xenoestrogens in particular, in the environment and

Fetal alcohol syndrome and developing craniofacial and dental structures--a review.

OBJECTIVES: Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a collection of signs and symptoms seen in children exposed to alcohol in the prenatal period. It is characterized mainly by a distinct pattern of craniofacial malformations, physical and mental retardation. However, with the increased incidence of FAS, there is a great variation in the clinical features of FAS. DESIGN: Narrative review. RESULTS: This review describes data from clinical and experimental studies, and in vitro models. Experimental studies have shown that alcohol has a direct toxic effect on the ectodermal and mesodermal cells of the

Development of a guinea pig model of chorioamnionitis and fetal brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop a guinea pig model of chorioamnionitis to study the mechanisms that lead to fetal brain injury. Study design Pregnant guinea pigs at 70% gestation were inoculated intracervically with 1000 to 2500 colony-forming units of Escherichia coli. Guinea pigs were killed 2 to 3 days after bacterial inoculation. Maternal blood and fetal amniotic fluid samples were analyzed for proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-1beta, and interleukin-6 levels with the use of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Fetal brains were staine

[The influence of iodine deficiency during pregnancy of fetal and neonatal development].

The iodine is fundamental substrate for thyroid hormones synthesis. Thyroxine and triiodothyronine play a crucial role in human brain development and maturation. It is well known, that not only fetal, but also maternal thyroid hormones are essential for normal prenatal central nervous system development. During pregnancy complex changes of maternal thyroid function occur and they are influenced by the maternal iodine supply. With decreasing iodine intake, maternal goiter and hypothyroxinemia as well as fetal and neonatal hypothyroidism become more prevalent. The severity of iodine deficiency a

Effect of triamcinolone acetonide on the development of the pulmonary airways in the fetal rat.

Triamcinolone acetonide (TAC) has a potent teratogenic effect on various mammalian fetal tissues as well as a steroid effect on the lung. Less well documented is the fact that it produces profound oligohydramnios. We wished to determine what effect TAC would have on branching morphogenesis and other aspects of lung development, using an in vivo model described previously. Thirty rats were randomized to receive 0.6 mg/kg of TAC or saline on days 12, 13, and 14 of gestation. At gestational days 15, 17, 18, and 21, the left lungs of 365 fetuses were studied by dissecting microscopy, histology, an

Neurohistochemical evaluation of adrenergic innervation in fetal development of the white rat.

Physiological development of adrenergic innervation, an important component of trophic and homeostatic regulation in the mammals was estimated. Our research is directed to evaluate both exo- and endogenous factors contributing to its impairment. The present investigation was carried out on 32 rat fetuses from three various 7-day periods of gestation. Histochemical studies included reactions to catecholamines according to Falck and Owman, and silver staining with AgNO3 according to the Bielschowsky-Gros method. Adrenergic innervation was examined in all fetal body regions, with a special refere

Development of patterns of activity in diaphragm of fetal lamb early in gestation.

To examine the development of respiratory motor activity early in mammalian development and its relationship to nonrespiratory activity, we recorded spontaneous electromyogram activity from chronically instrumented fetal lambs over the period from 45 to 65 days' gestation (G45 to G65, term = G147). Two distinct forms of motor behavior were observed at G45 in recordings made from the costal diaphragm and longissimus dorsi muscles. The predominant behavior consisted of cycles of sustained, coincident activity in the two muscles alternating with periods of inactivity. The incidence of this type o

Effect of maternal diabetes and dietary copper on fetal development in rats.

To test whether diabetes associated alterations in copper metabolism contribute to diabetes-induced teratogenicity in rats, pregnancy outcome was compared between diabetic and nondiabetic rats fed either a copper adequate (12 micrograms/g diet) or low copper diet (1 microgram/g diet). The dietary regimen was begun two weeks prior to mating and continued throughout pregnancy. To facilitate the reduction of maternal copper stores in the low copper groups, the low copper diet was supplemented with a copper chelator, triethylenetetraamine, at 1% for one week; the chelator was removed from the diet

Amniotic oxytocin and vasopressin in relation to human fetal development and labour.

Previous experiments in rats revealed increased amniotic oxytocin (OXT) levels in the course of normal development and increased vasopressin (AVP) levels in retarded fetal growth. In order to see whether similar changes would also occur in human, OXT and AVP levels were determined in amniotic fluid, maternal and fetal plasma before or during labour. Positive correlations were found between umbilical AVP levels on the one hand and gestation length, birth weight, placental weight and brain size on the other. This suggests a maturation process taking place in the AVP-producing system. A marked in
