The mechanism by which aerobic exercise promotes cardiac function after myocardial infarction (MI) is still not fully understand. BACKGROUND: Hypercalcemia is highly prevalent in kidney transplant recipients with hyperparathyroidism. However, its long-term impact on graft function is uncertain.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study investigating adverse graft outcomes associated with persistent hypercalcemia (free calcium > 5.2 mg/dL in ≥ 80% of measures) and inappropriately elevated intact parathyroid hormone (> 30 pg/mL) in kidney transplant recipients. We report a case of refractory pretibial myxoedema (PTM) with Graves' disease in which there was a good clinical response to intralesional injection of the insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) antagonist octreotide. We have examined the effects of four 'exogenous' growth factors, i.e. PDGF-BB (5 ng/ml), TGF-beta1 (5 ng/ml), bFGF (10 ng/ml) and EGF (10 ng/ml) on the contraction of floating collagen type I lattices populated by human normal skin (NS) and hypertrophic scar (HS) fibroblasts (FPCL). Only TGF-beta1 enhanced the contractility of both NS and HS fibroblasts in the collagen lattice (P < 0.01).
