The Presence and the Location of an Ulnar Styloid Fracture Associated With Distal Radius Fracture Predict the Presence of Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex 1B Injury.

PURPOSE: To investigate the correlation between ulnar styloid fracture (USF) associated with distal radius fracture (DRF) and triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injuries and to elucidate whether the presence or location of an USF in a patient with DRF predicts the presence of traumatic TFCC injuries. METHODS: From 2005 to 2018, an arthroscopic evaluation was performed to detect TFCC injuries associated with DRF. The presence and location of USFs were evaluated using computed tomography. TFCC injuries were classified in accordance with Palmer's classification. All wrists were divided int

The Importance of the Knee Joint Meniscal Fibrocartilages as Stabilizing Weight Bearing Structures Providing Global Protection to Human Knee-Joint Tissues.

The aim of this study was to review aspects of the pathobiology of the meniscus in health and disease and show how degeneration of the meniscus can contribute to deleterious changes in other knee joint components. The menisci, distinctive semilunar weight bearing fibrocartilages, provide knee joint stability, co-ordinating functional contributions from articular cartilage, ligaments/tendons, synovium, subchondral bone and infra-patellar fat pad during knee joint articulation. The meniscus contains metabolically active cell populations responsive to growth factors, chemokines and inflammatory c

Synovium-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Based Scaffold-Free Fibrocartilage Engineering for Bone-Tendon Interface Healing in an Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Model.

BACKGROUND: Current tendon and ligament reconstruction surgeries rely on scar tissue healing which differs from native bone-to-tendon interface (BTI) tissue. We aimed to engineer Synovium-derived mesenchymal stem cells (Sy-MSCs) based scaffold-free fibrocartilage constructs and investigate in vivo bone-tendon interface (BTI) healing efficacy in a rat anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction model. METHODS: Sy-MSCs were isolated from knee joint of rats. Scaffold-free sy-MSC constructs were fabricated and cultured in differentiation media including  TGF-β-only, CTGF-only, and TGF-β + CTG

Arthroscopic Suture Repair With Additional Pronator Quadratus Advancement for the Treatment of Acute Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex Tear With Distal Radioulnar Joint Instability.

Treatment of acute triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) tear using arthroscopic suture repair has been used as a general treatment method, but it is difficult to obtain perfect results in all cases. We evaluated clinical and radiologic outcomes of the acute TFCC tear with distal radioulnar joint instability using the arthroscopic suture repair with pronator quadratus (PQ) advancement. Altogether, 80 patients (48 male, 32 female; mean ± SD age, 37.3 ± 11.5 years; mean ± SD follow-up, 23.7 ± 11.4 months) were enrolled in the study. Follow-up was at least 12 months (range, 12-38 months). Pati

Combined repair of scapholunate ligament (SL) and triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) lesions in chronic trauma of the wrist: surgical treatment of 14 patients.

PURPOSE: Injuries of the scapholunate ligament (SL) and of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) represent the main ligament injuries of the traumatic wrist. A double injury of the SL and TFCC ligaments is quite common in the trauma setting, and clinical examination is fundamental. MRI allows to detection of a TFCC and SL ligament injury, but wrist arthroscopy is still the gold standard for diagnosis. We present the clinical results of the combined reconstruction of chronic scapholunate ligament and TFCC injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen patients were treated at our hospital with

Implantation of autogenous meniscal fragments wrapped with a fascia sheath induces fibrocartilage regeneration in a large meniscal defect in sheep: A histological and biomechanical study.

INTRODUCTION: Currently, various studies have been reported to regenerate the meniscus tissue in a large defect after partial meniscectomy using biological or synthetic scaffolds with or without fibrochondrocytes. However, the clinical utility of those treatments has not been established as of yet. HYPOTHESIS: Purposes of this study were to develop a sheep model to evaluate feasibility of this new surgical strategy to treat the irreparable meniscus injury, and to test the hypothesis that implantation of autogenous meniscal fragments wrapped with a fascia sheath may significantly induce fibroc

Effectiveness of two orthotic designs on pain and hand function in patients with degenerative triangular fibrocartilage complex lesions: A preliminary randomized crossover study.

BACKGROUND: Degenerative lesions of the Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex (TFCC) cause ulnar-sided wrist pain and functional impairment. While orthoses are a common conservative treatment, evidence comparing the efficacy of different orthotic designs is limited. PURPOSE: To compare the immediate effects of a novel hinged ulnar gutter orthosis versus a conventional volar wrist immobilization orthosis on pain, hand function, grip strength, and weight-bearing tolerance in individuals with degenerative TFCC lesions. STUDY DESIGN: Preliminary randomized crossover study. METHODS: Twenty one adult

Recurrent Dislocation of the Extensor Carpi Ulnaris Tendon with Ulnar-Sided Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex Injury in an Ice Hockey Player: A Case Report.

Ulnar-sided wrist pain is common among athletes who subject their wrists to forceful rotational movements. Injury to the numerous complex structures in the ulnar wrist, including the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) tendon and triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC), can result in ulnar-sided wrist pain. Although differentiating between ECU tendinitis and TFCC injury is necessary, ECU tendon disorders and TFCC injury occasionally occur concurrently. Subluxation or dislocation of the ECU tendon is rare but may cause symptoms in athletes subjecting their wrists to forceful rotational movements. We

The holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser in wrist arthroscopy: a five-year experience in the treatment of central triangular fibrocartilage complex tears by partial excision.

Arthroscopic debridement of the articular disk is an accepted method for the treatment of symptomatic central tears of the triangular fibrocartilage complex. Current techniques use punches, knives, and shavers to debride the torn disk back to a stable peripheral rim. The holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser offers an alternative method for disk debridement with potential advantages of enhanced speed, precision, and hemostasis. We present a retrospective review of 35 patients who underwent arthroscopic laser debridement for a Palmer type IA tear in the triangular fibrocartilage complex. Overal
