Surviving more than cancer: the unseen toll of financial toxicity and basic needs insecurity in adolescent and young adult cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent and young adult (AYA) survivors of cancer are at elevated risk for financial challenges, food insecurity, and basic needs instability. However, little is known about their lived experiences. Hence, this study explored the lived experiences of financial toxicity, basic needs instability, and food insecurity among AYA survivors and described the impact of financial toxicity on the overall well-being of AYA survivors. METHODS: Using a systematic content analysis approach, this study examined 3,868 Reddit items (original posts and associated comments) drawn from 26 Reddit co

A Patient-Informed Framework of Financial Strain Among Adults with Multimorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Over one-quarter of adults have multimorbidity. Patients with multimorbidity are more likely to struggle to afford their care than patients without multimorbidity, but their experiences with financial strain have not been fully described. OBJECTIVE: We qualitatively explored the lived experiences of adults with multimorbidity to develop a framework describing financial strain in this patient population. DESIGN: Using semi-structured interviews, we asked participants to describe scenarios causing financial strain, any exacerbating or alleviating factors, and emotional/behavioral r

Impacts of Financial Toxicity on Patients Receiving Dialysis: An Exploratory Qualitative Study.

KEY POINTS: The loss of income and surging health care expenditures exacerbate financial toxicity in patients with kidney failure undergoing dialysis. Patients experienced financial toxicity through reduced spending, social withdrawal, negative emotions, and limited treatment options. The study highlights the importance of addressing financial concerns in dialysis care. BACKGROUND: Many patients with kidney failure experience deteriorating financial situations that affect their everyday lives. Financial toxicity (FT) provides a person-centered perspective of this phenomenon. However, little i

Lived Experiences of Male Caregivers Supporting Individuals with Parkinson's Disease.

Background/Objectives: Individuals living with Parkinson's disease often rely on informal caregivers for daily support. Existing research on caregiving has largely been framed from a predominantly female perspective. However, caregiving roles are evolving, with an increasing number of men assuming these responsibilities. Despite this shift, the experiences of male caregivers remain underexplored. A deeper understanding of their perspectives is essential to inform more inclusive and effective caregiver support in Parkinson's disease care. This study aimed to explore the lived experience of male

The determinants of caregiver use and its costs for elderly inpatients in Korea: a study applying Andersen's behavioral model of health care utilization and replacement cost method.

OBJECTIVES: The average annual healthcare expenditure among elderly patients in Korea is increasing rapidly in indirect healthcare sectors, … e. RESULTS: Elderly inpatients who used tertiary hospitals (OR: 2.77, p-value < 0.00) and received financial support (OR: 2.68, p-value < 0.00) were more likely to receive support from a caregiver. However, elderly inpatients living alone were lesser to do so (OR: 0.49, p-value < 0.00). Elderly inpatients with Medicaid insurance (β:0.54, p-value = 0.02) or financi …

'Money up in smoke': The financial benefits of smoking cessation may be more motivating to people who are homeless than potential health gains.

INTRODUCTION: High rates of tobacco smoking among people who are homeless or living in temporary accommodation exacerbate poor health outcomes and financial disadvantage. There is limited research on this population's perceptions of smoking cessation benefits or support strategies. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 68 male smokers living in a temporary accommodation hostel in Brisbane, Australia. The survey measured smoking and quit attempt history, perceptions of cessation aids and benefits of cessation, and awareness of the Intensive Quit Support program-a free Queensland go

Not for the faint of heart? A gendered perspective on psychological distress in entrepreneurship.

Our research was motivated by the goal of better understanding how male and female first-time entrepreneurs psychologically appraise key stressors during the business start-up process, and how these stress appraisals are related to psychological distress after business launch. Informed by role congruity theory (Eagly & Karau, 2002), we argue that financial and social stressors during business launch are appraised as particularly stressful by women. Both starting a business due to financial needs motivation (i.e., high agency) and failing to receive social support during business launch (i.e.,

Relationship of length of transverse process of seventh cervical vertebra with positive nerve conduction studies in cases of brachialgia.

INTRODUCTION: Pathway programs aim to increase diversity in medicine by providing exposure, opportunities, and mentorship for underrepresented minority (URiM) students. While many studies focus on undergraduate-level pathway programs, few examine high school students' career trajectories. Doctors of Tomorrow (DoT) is a high school pipeline program at the University of Michigan that partners with Detroit high schools. This study evaluates the outcomes of this program and the additional needs for achieving its goal of improving diversity in the medical workforce. METHODS: A cross-sectional surv

Explainable Machine Learning for Predicting Student Depression Risk.

Depression among students has emerged as a critical issue within educational institutions, leading to the need for approaches that can support early identification of students at risk. This study developed an explainable machine learning framework for predicting student depression risk using non-clinical demographic, academic, lifestyle, and psychosocial factors. Using a public OpenML dataset containing approximately 27,901 student records, logistic regression, random forest, and XGBoost models were developed and evaluated using accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and ROC-AUC. Benefits of HIV screening of blood transfusions in Zambia.

Blood transfusion continues to be an important route of transmission of HIV in developing countries, especially for young children following the perinatal period. Testing for HIV is costly and reliable donor support for the purchase of test kits is often essential, yet difficult to secure. The costs of screening transfusions for HIV and the financial benefits in terms of savings on treatment costs averted were calculated for a district hospital in Zambia where seroprevalence among donors was 15.9%. Financial benefits exceed costs by a factor of 2.7-3.5. In 1991, 1073 transfusions were given an

Nurse-Led Identification of Financial Toxicity in Stroke Patients Using Machine Learning: Development and Validation of an Associational Prediction Model.

AIM: To develop and validate a machine learning-based associational prediction model for nurse-led identification of financial toxicity (FT) among stroke patients. BACKGROUND: FT is increasingly recognized among patients with chronic conditions, yet evidence in stroke patients remains limited. Early identification may help nurses provide timely financial, psychosocial, and discharge-related support. METHODS: A total of 575 stroke patients were recruited. Based on Health Ecology Theory, factors were grouped into five levels. The dataset was randomly split 7:3 into training and test sets. Leas

Measuring economic burden in families of individuals with Angelman Syndrome in Poland: a caregivers' survey.

BACKGROUND: Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a rare neurogenetic disorder characterized by severe intellectual disability, seizures, and motor and speech impairments, requiring lifelong, intensive care. Although caregivers of individuals with AS often face reduced quality of life and substantial emotional and financial strain, little is known about the cost-of-illness in Poland. To address this gap, we conducted a cross-sectional study in collaboration with the Foundation for Angelman Syndrome Therapeutics Poland (FAST Poland). An anonymous web-based survey was completed by 85 parents of individuals

COVID-19 water, sanitation, and hygiene response: Review of measures and initiatives adopted by governments, regulators, utilities, and other stakeholders in 84 countries.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a light on handwashing as an inexpensive, widely applicable response measure. In consequence, most governments have taken action to promote access to water and sanitation services for all. This paper documents an overview of initiatives and interventions that countries have implemented during the first months of the COVID-19 response. Initiatives have been identified across 84 countries worldwide, and categorized into those that aimed at securing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) for all, and those that sought to provide technical and financial support to se…

Financial incentives and long-acting injectable antipsychotics engagement: community mental health professionals' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Long-Acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics prevent relapse in patients with unreliable adherence to oral antipsychotics. Non-engagement with treatment is associated with relapse and involuntary admission. Financial incentives have been shown to increase engagement with LAI antipsychotics among those at highest risk of relapse. This study aimed to explore whether community mental health professionals who deliver LAI antipsychotics find financial incentives acceptable and whether empirical research has addressed their concerns. METHODS: Fourteen mental health professionals who deliv

Can preventive care activities in general practice be sustained when financial incentives and external audit plus feedback are removed? ACCEPt-able: a cluster randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Financial incentives and audit plus feedback on performance are two strategies commonly used by governments to motivate general practitioners (GP) to undertake specific healthcare activities. However, in recent years, governments have reduced or removed incentive payments without evidence of the potential impact on GP behaviour and patient outcomes. This trial (known as ACCEPt-able) aims to determine whether preventive care activities in general practice are sustained when financial incentives and/or external audit plus feedback on preventive care activities are removed.
