Precision-Arranged DNA Origami Plasmonic Nanoantennas for Multidimensional Smart-Warning of Weightlessness Induced Bone Loss.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) shows promise for monitoring health during space missions, particularly in assessing the effects of microgravity and radiation. However, traditional SERS sensors struggle with precise interfacial engineering, leading to a relatively poor assembly efficiency, and are unable to meet the practical needs of extreme spaceflight environments. To address this, it is designed and fabricated precision-arranged DNA origami plasmonic nanoantennas. By leveraging DNA origami's addressability, it is built a 3 × 4 antenna array with a controlled spacing of 21.76 nm, e

Confined spaces in space: Cerebral implications of chronic elevations of inspired carbon dioxide and implications for long-duration space travel.

Cerebrovascular regulation is critically dependent upon the arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide ( P aC O 2 ), owing to its effect on cerebral blood flow, tissue P C O 2 , tissue proton concentration, cerebral metabolism and cognitive and neuronal function. In normal environments and in the absence of pathology, at least over acute time frames, hypercapnia is usually managed readily via the respiratory chemoreflex arcs and/or acid-base buffering capacity, such that there is minimal impact on cerebrovascular and neurological function. However, in non-normal environments, such as en

Aging and putative frailty biomarkers are altered by spaceflight.

Human space exploration poses inherent risks to astronauts' health, leading to molecular changes that can significantly impact their well-being. These alterations encompass genomic instability, mitochondrial dysfunction, increased inflammation, homeostatic dysregulation, and various epigenomic changes. Remarkably, these changes bear similarities to those observed during the aging process on Earth. However, our understanding of the connection between these molecular shifts and disease development in space remains limited. Frailty syndrome, a clinical syndrome associated with biological aging, h

Detection of Target Genes for Drug Repurposing to Treat Skeletal Muscle Atrophy in Mice Flown in Spaceflight.

Skeletal muscle atrophy is a common condition in aging, diabetes, and in long duration spaceflights due to microgravity. This article investigates multi-modal gene disease and disease drug networks via link prediction algorithms to select drugs for repurposing to treat skeletal muscle atrophy. Key target genes that cause muscle atrophy in the left and right extensor digitorum longus muscle tissue, gastrocnemius, quadriceps, and the left and right soleus muscles are detected using graph theoretic network analysis, by mining the transcriptomic datasets collected from mice flown in spaceflight ma

The digestive tract of rat after flight in the biosatellite Cosmos 1667.

From the histochemical investigation carried out on the digestive tract of rats after 7 days space flight in the soviet biosatellite Cosmos 1667 it resulted that neutral and acid glycoproteins diminished slightly in the sublingual gland, stomach, small intestine and the colon. Some intestinal enzymes augmented (leucineaminopeptidase, acid phosphatase, adenosinetriphosphatase and glucose-6-phosphatase). The changes observed after this flight were less marked than after an 18 day flight (in the Soviet biosatellite Cosmos 936 and 1129) and similar to those revealed after 7 days of hypokinesia. Th

Emergence of Human and Animal Melioidosis in Southern Africa, 2018-2021.

Melioidosis is increasingly recognised in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide as a serious and potentially fatal bacterial infection affecting humans and animals, acquired from the environment. Until now, human cases of melioidosis had not been reported in Southern Africa. Over a four-year period, we identified three human and two animal cases of melioidosis in South Africa and Namibia. Burkholderia pseudomallei isolates were investigated by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Phylogenetic analysi

Effects of spaceflight on the attachment of tendons to bone in the hindlimb of the pregnant rat.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of spaceflight on the structure of the tendon-bone junction (TBJ). Pregnant rats either flew in the space shuttle Atlantis (flight group; F) or were exposed to simulated launch and landing protocols (synchronous control group; SC) during days 9-19 of pregnancy. Following birth of their pups, maternal hindlimbs were studied using scanning electron and light microscopic histomophometric techniques. The tibial and calcaneal tuberosities, the fibular head, and the tibia-fibula junction were studied. Myofiber density and cross-sectional area

[Rapid screening of 111 pesticides and veterinary drugs in livestock and poultry meat by ultra performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometry].

The consumption of agricultural products has increased in recent years owing to abundant production and improved living standards. Veterinary drugs are highly commercialized and widely used in animal husbandry to ensure animal health and production performance. Moreover, pesticides can become enriched during animal breeding, resulting in animal-derived food pollution through foraging, drinking, and environmental disinfection that can potentially damage human health. Consequently, food-safety issues associated with pesticide and veterinary-drug residues have attracted considerable attention. Ho

Achieving automated scorpion venom mass fingerprinting (VMF) in the nanogram range.

During the past decade mass spectrometry (MS) has become one of the major suitable techniques for peptide and protein analysis from animal venoms, not only to identify new toxins within these complex mixtures, but also for toxin structural studies. The goal of the experiments presented here was to test the ultimate limit for producing scorpion venom mass fingerprinting (VMF; i.e. a comprehensive list of all masses in presence). Thanks to recent developments in nano ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrome

Application the mass spectrometry MALDI-TOF technique for detection of Babesia canis canis infection in dogs.

The aim of this study was to use rapid mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics analyses for diagnosis of Babesia canis canis infections in dogs. The study was conducted on two groups of dogs--healthy dogs and dogs infected with B. canis canis which demonstrated symptoms of babesiosis. The matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) MS technique revealed the presence of a protein fraction of 51-52 kDa in the blood serum of all the animals infected with the protozoa, which was not found in the serum of healthy dogs. The proteins are suspected to be disease markers, whe

Indirect flight of an African bat to Israel: an example of the potential for zoonotic pathogens to move between continents.

The transmission of harmful pathogens during commercial air flights is an increasing health concern. A potential, yet relatively overlooked source of zoonotic infectious diseases involves collisions of birds and bats with aircraft and long distance transport of their carcasses. We report a case of aerial transportation of the remains of an African fruit bat over three continents, following a collision with an aircraft, and demonstrate the relative ease with which zoonotic pathogens, such as rabies virus or other viruses associated with bats, may cross national boundaries and continents even. Centrifugation as a countermeasure during actual and simulated microgravity: a review.

This paper summarizes what has been learned from studies of the effects of artificial gravity generated by centrifugation in actual and simulated weightless conditions. The experience of artificial gravity during actual space flight in animals and humans are discussed. Studies using intermittent centrifugation during bed rest and water immersion, as a way to maintain orthostatic tolerance and exercise capacity, are reviewed; their results indicate that intermittent centrifugation is a potential countermeasure for maintaining the integrity of these physiological functions in extended space miss

Transportation noise and the cardiometabolic risk.

Transportation noise is a widespread and often underestimated environmental pollutant, posing a substantial health risk particularly in urban areas. In contrast to air pollution, the health effects of noise pollution are less extensively documented. Defined as an unwanted and/or harmful sound, noise pollution affects over 20 % of the European Union (EU) population, contributing to an estimated 12,000 premature deaths and 48,000 new cases of ischemic heart disease annually. Recent epidemiological evidence strengthens the link between transportation noise and cardiovascular disease (CVD). A 2024

Hop, hop and away: On the take-off of Archaeopteryx using a multiple leaping mechanism.

Archaeopteryx, the iconic 150-million-year-old basal bird, lies at the heart of the debate on the origin of avian flight. While its asymmetric wing feathers indicate some flight capability, its limited shoulder mobility and reduced feather asymmetry suggest it lacked the capacity for the single, powerful leap used by modern birds for rapid take-off. Observations of extant birds reveal that many species, including corvids, employ multiple bipedal leaps with minimal wing assistance to gradually accelerate during take-off, particularly in low-stress contexts. Given Archaeopteryx's robust hindlimb

Activation of mating-related behavior by serotonin in males of the Japanese yellow hornet Vespa simillima.

The behavioral physiology of males in social wasps has received little attention, despite the importance of male behavior adapted to complex social environments. To explore the roles of brain biogenic amines in mating-related behavior in male Japanese yellow hornets (Vespa simillima), we first determined the development of mating-related behavior and age-related changes to biogenic amines in the brain. The activities of locomotion, flight, and mating in the males increased with day-age by 1 week after emergence. Testes size decreased within 1 week after adult emergence, suggesting that male se

Male-Specific Substances Possibly Contributing to Nuptial Flight of the Japanese Carpenter Ant Camponotus japonicus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

The nuptial flight of ants usually occurs during certain periods of the year. Alate females and males fly out of their nests to mate simultaneously. In the genus Camponotus, sex-specific chemicals are deposited in the male head; however, their roles in nuptial flight have not yet been clarified. This study aimed to elucidate the functions of male-specific chemicals in the Japanese carpenter ant Camponotus japonicus. First, we identified three chemicals characteristic to the male - methyl salicylate (MS), methyl 6-methylsalicylate (MMS), and methyl anthranilate (MA) - all of which triggered ele

A simple and reliable method for longitudinal assessment of untethered mosquito induced flight activity.

Aedes aegypti adult females are key vectors of several arboviruses and flight activity plays a central role in mosquito biology and disease transmission. Available methods to quantify mosquito flight usually require special devices and mostly assess spontaneous locomotor activity at individual level. Here, we developed a new method to determine longitudinal untethered adult A. aegypti induced flight activity: the INduced FLight Activity TEst (INFLATE). This method was an adaptation of the "rapid iterative negative geotaxis" assay to assess locomotor activity in Drosophila and explore the spont

Effects of flight speed upon muscle activity in hummingbirds.

Hummingbirds have the smallest body size and highest wingbeat frequencies of all flying vertebrates, so they represent one endpoint for evaluating the effects of body size on sustained muscle function and flight performance. Other bird species vary neuromuscular recruitment and contractile behavior to accomplish flight over a wide range of speeds, typically exhibiting a U-shaped curve with maxima at the slowest and fastest flight speeds. To test whether the high wingbeat frequencies and aerodynamically active upstroke of hummingbirds lead to different patterns, we flew rufous hummingbirds (Sel

Testing the role of sensory systems in the migratory heading of a songbird.

The identification of the sensory cues and mechanisms by which migratory birds are able to reach the same breeding and wintering grounds year after year has eluded biologists despite more than 50 years of intensive study. While a number of environmental cues have been proposed to play a role in the navigation of birds, arguments still persist about which cues are essential for the experience based navigation shown by adult migrants. To date, few studies have tested the sensory basis of navigational cues used during actual migration in the wild: mainly laboratory based studies or homing during
