Ferrihydrite transformations in flooded paddy soils: rates, pathways, and product spatial distributions.

Complex interactions between redox-driven element cycles in soils influence iron mineral transformation processes. The rates and pathways of iron mineral transformation processes have been studied intensely in model systems such as mixed suspensions, but transformation in complex heterogeneous porous media is not well understood. Here, mesh bags containing 0.5 g of ferrihydrite were incubated in five water-saturated paddy soils with contrasting microbial iron-reduction potential for up to twelve weeks. Using X-ray diffraction analysis, we show near-complete transformation of the ferrihydrite t

Flood syndrome: a rare case of spontaneous rupture of umbilical hernia in a cirrhotic patient.

Flood syndrome is a rare and potentially fatal complication of long-standing ascites resulting from a spontaneous rupture of an umbilical hernia. We present the case of a 67-year-old male with a medical history of diastolic heart failure, cocaine abuse, hepatitis C and cirrhosis secondary to daily alcohol consumption who presented to the emergency department with spontaneous rupture of an umbilical hernia with continuous, perfuse drainage of ascites from a 3 cm hernia defect. In this case report, we highlight the successful temporizing and definitive management of flood syndrome, as the patien

Urban flooding and risk of leptospirosis; Pakistan on the verge of a new disaster: A call for action.

Leptospirosis is an overlooked zoonotic and waterborne disease that is emerging as a global public threat due to morbidity and mortality observed in both animals and humans. The outbreaks are typically related to floods and hurricanes following monsoon rains, during which Leptospiras are washed off in contaminated soil and often settle in water bodies. Wildlife trapping for scientific purposes, industrial animal employment, water-intensive crop farming, sewage work, and open-water swimming are one of the major risk factors contributing to the rapid spread of disease. Occasionally, outbreaks ar…

Assessment of MR imaging during one-lung flooding in a large animal model.

OBJECTIVE: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lung remains challenging due to the low tissue density, susceptibility artefacts, unfavourable relaxation times and motion. Previously, we demonstrated in vivo that one-lung flooding (OLF) with saline is a viable and safe approach. This study investigates the feasibility of OLF in an MRI environment and evaluates the flooding process on MR images. METHODS: OLF of the left lung was performed on five animals using a porcine model. Before, during and after OLF, standard T2w and T1w spin-echo (SE) and gradient-echo (GRE) sequences were applied at

Characterization of the Copper Transporters from Lotus spp. and Their Involvement under Flooding Conditions.

Forage legumes are an important livestock nutritional resource, which includes essential metals, such as copper. Particularly, the high prevalence of hypocuprosis causes important economic losses to Argentinian cattle agrosystems. Copper deficiency in cattle is partially due to its low content in forage produced by natural grassland, and is exacerbated by flooding conditions. Previous results indicated that incorporation of Lotus spp. into natural grassland increases forage nutritional quality, including higher copper levels. However, the biological processes and molecular mechanisms involved

'I followed the flood': a gender analysis of the moral and financial economies of forced migration.

What would a gender analysis of refugee crises reveal if one expanded the focus beyond female refugees, and acts of physical violence? This paper draws on qualitative research conducted in Denmark, Greece, Jordan, and Turkey in July and August 2016 to spotlight the gendered kinship, hierarchies, networks, and transactions that affect refugees. The coping strategies of groups often overlooked in the gender conversation are examined throughout this study, including those of male refugees and those making crossings outside of the context of a family unit. The analysis is theoretically situated at

The impact of a high magnitude flood on metal pollution in a shallow subtropical estuarine embayment.

Drought-breaking floods pose a risk to coastal water quality as sediments, nutrients, and pollutants stored within catchments during periods of low flow are mobilized and delivered to coastal waters within a short period of time. Here we use subtidal surface sediment surveys and sediment cores to explore the effects of the 2011 Brisbane River flood on trace metals zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), and phosphorus (P) deposition in Moreton Bay, a shallow subtropical bay in eastern Australia. Concentrations of Zn, Cu, and Pb in sediments in central Mor…

DETECTION OF BURKHOLDERIA PSEUDOMALLEI FROM POST-FLOOD SOIL SAMPLES IN KELANTAN, MALAYSIA.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is an important causative organism of fatal community bacteremia especially in Southeast Asia and northern Australia. Outbreaks of melioidosis have been reported post-floods and -typhoons. A cross sectional study was conducted in January 2015, following a major flood in Kelantan, Malaysia to detect presence of B. pseudomallei from soil. A total of 89 soil samples were cultured for B. pseudomallei on Ashdown agar. Putative colonies underwent further staining and biochemical testing prior to confirmation by PCR. Rate of detection was 1%, although low, it nevertheless in…

Taenia spp. infections in wildlife in the Bangweulu and Kafue flood plains ecosystems of Zambia.

Taenia spp. have an indirect life cycle, cycling between a definitive and an intermediate host with zoonotic species causing public health problems in many developing countries. During the course of 2 separate surveys in Zambia (2004 and 2009), the presence of Taenia larval stages (cysticerci) was examined in Kafue lechwe (Kobus leche kafuensis), Black lechwe (Kobus leche smithermani) and other wildlife species from the Kafue and Bangweulu flood plains. Examinations involved post-mortem inspection and serum specific antigen detection. The recovered cysts from seven carcasses were characterised

Annual flooding and fish-mercury bioaccumulation in the environmentally impacted Rio Madeira (Amazon).

Regular annual flooding of the Amazonian rivers changes the aquatic environment affecting fish feeding strategies. The Rio Madeira has been greatly impacted by deforestation for agricultural projects, damming for a hydroelectric power plant, and alluvial gold extraction. We studied fish-Hg concentrations within defined weight ranges of representative species at the top of the food web, comparing high and low water seasons. Selected piscivorous species (Cichla spp, Hoplias malabaricus, Pinirampus pirinampu, Serrasalmus spp) showed a large variation of Hg concentrations but only "traíra" (Hoplia

Modified Starch Flooding in Carbonates: Impact on Oil Recovery and Crude Oil Composition.

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in carbonate reservoirs has been a persistent challenge due to their complex wettability and heterogeneity. In a previous study, the introduction of quaternary ammonium groups was shown to increase the amphiphilic character and solubility of the starch derivatives, promoting wettability alteration from oil-wet to mixed-wet conditions at concentrations of 1 mg/mL on the limestone outcrop surface. Motivated by these findings, three 2-hydroxy-3-(trimethylammonium)-propyl starch derivatives (HTPS), previously synthesized from corn starch with different cationic degrees

Flooding-induced transcriptomic responses and yield stability in oil palm (Elaeis guineensis).

Flooding response in oil palm involves a subtle or broad transcriptional strategy, each associating differently to yield stability across flooding depths. ADH1 baseline expression discriminates these response types. Oil palm is among the world's most productive oil crops, yet information on its response to flooding is limited despite increasing flooding frequency associated with climate change. In this study, leaf transcriptomes from oil palms in the field sampled under non-flooding, low-flooding, and high-flooding conditions revealed two distinct transcriptomic response types, designated as G

How can hydrological connectivity inform catchment scale stormwater flood management?

Landscape-based stormwater solutions can attenuate runoff locally, yet translating hydrological benefits into catchment-scale flood mitigation often remains difficult. This shortfall reflects a current site-focused paradigm that overlooks the role of hydrological connectivity (HC) in organising flood inundation. HC has long informed process understanding in fluvial hydrology, but it has been less frequently operationalised as a spatial diagnostic for urban stormwater flooding. This study applies the spatially explicit, event-aware Index of Hydrological Connectivity (IHC) to diagnose connectivi

Experimental Study on the Mechanism and Effect of Middle-Phase Microemulsion Flooding in a Conglomerate Reservoir.

To address the characteristics of strong heterogeneity, complex pore-throat structures, and poor adaptability of conventional flooding systems in conglomerate reservoirs, a systematic comparative study on the oil displacement efficiency of middle-phase microemulsion and conventional binary systems (polymer + surfactant) was conducted using a combination of long-core displacement experiments, interfacial tension measurements, and polarizing microscopy observations. Representative cores with permeability ranging from 50 to 500 mD were selected for displacement experiments under varying condition
