Polarity of the surrounding medium affects the excited states of UV-B sunscreens. Therefore understanding excited state processes in a mixed polarity model system similar to skin is essential. We report the excited state lifetimes, quantum yields, radiative and non-radiative rates of three sunscreens. Among the three UV-B sunscreens studied, octyl salicylate emits from a single excited state, while padimate O and octyl methoxy cinnamate show multiple states. Despite the fact that thioridazine is used clinically as a neuroleptic drug, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying its biological effects, in particular about its interactions with membranes. Uniocular posterior polar lesions thought to be characteristic of suspected adult ocular toxocariasis have been observed in a group of eight patients whose ages ranged from 20 to 50 years. Six patients had positive fluorescent antibody tests for Toxocara species, whereas control serological studies showed that only 4% of healthy adults in the same age group had positive fluorescent antibody responses. All the patients with clearly defined progression of their retinal lesions had positive fluorescent antibody tests. In two patients positive tests reverted to negative within 2 years.

A chemiluminescent immunoassay for theophylline in serum or plasma was developed for the Ciba Corning ACS: 180 automated analyzer. The assay has a limit of quantitation of 0.2 microgram/ml, with a range up to 40 micrograms/ml. We have used spin labeling, fluorescence polarization, and chemical analysis to characterize membrane properties of thymocytes from mice treated with immunomodulatory drugs. The number of thymocytes was reduced 90-95% by treatment of 6-9 week old mice with hydrocortisone acetate (HCA) or methylprednisolone (both 125 mg/kg) or with cyclophosphamide (250 mg/kg). A micromethod for estimating free levels of phenobarbitone, phenytoin and carbamazepine in patients' sera is described. Serum samples are subjected to a process of ultrafiltration, the filtrates treated with acetonitrile and the drug concentration quantified using high performance liquid chromatography. The stability of free levels in specimens before and after storage is investigated.
