Anisotropic Compressive Behavior of Metallic Foams under Extreme Temperature Conditions.

Metallic foams find their applicability in complex systems that operate under both real-life conditions (Earth living conditions) and extreme temperature conditions (low or high temperatures). In this paper, the main mechanical properties of closed-cell aluminum alloy (A356) foams under quasi-static compression loading conditions were determined. In order to investigate the compressive behavior, three orthogonal directions (X, Y, and Z) and three testing temperatures (-196, 25 and 250 °C) were considered. It has been observed that the temperature significantly influences the strength propertie

SAP deficiency mitigated atherosclerotic lesions in ApoE(-/-) mice.

OBJECTIVE: Serum amyloid P conpoent (SAP), a member of the pentraxin family, interact with pathogens and cell debris to promote their removal by macrophages and neutrophils and is co-localized with atherosclerotic plaques in patients. However, the exact mechanism of SAP in atherogenesis is still unclear. We investigated whether SAP influence macrophage recruitment and foam cell formation and ultimately affect atherosclerotic progression. METHODS: we generated apoE(-/-); SAP(-/-) (DKO) mice and fed them western diet for 4 and 8 weeks to characterize atherosclerosis development. RESULTS: SAP d

An improved method of delivering a sclerosing agent for the treatment of malignant pleural effusion.

BACKGROUND: Malignant pleural effusion (MPE) is a devastating sequela associated with cancer. Talc pleurodesis is a common treatment strategy for MPE but has been estimated to be unsuccessful in up to 20-50% of patients. Clinical failure of talc pleurodesis is thought to be due to poor dispersion. This monograph reports the development of a foam delivery system designed to more effectively coat the pleural cavity. METHODS: C57BL/6 mice were injected with Lewis lung carcinoma (LL/2) cells intrapleurally to induce MPE. The mice then received either normal saline (NS) control, foam control (F),

The role of macrophage ion channels in the progression of atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is a complex inflammatory disease that affects the arteries and can lead to severe complications such as heart attack and stroke. Macrophages, a type of immune cell, play a crucial role in atherosclerosis initiation and progression. Emerging studies revealed that ion channels regulate macrophage activation, polarization, phagocytosis, and cytokine secretion. Moreover, macrophage ion channel dysfunction is implicated in macrophage-derived foam cell formation and atherogenesis. In this context, exploring the regulatory role of ion channels in macrophage function and their impacts

Regulation of cholesterol homeostasis in health and diseases: from mechanisms to targeted therapeutics.

Disturbed cholesterol homeostasis plays critical roles in the development of multiple diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases (CVD), neurodegenerative diseases and cancers, particularly the CVD in which the accumulation of lipids (mainly the cholesteryl esters) within macrophage/foam cells underneath the endothelial layer drives the formation of atherosclerotic lesions eventually. More and more studies have shown that lowering cholesterol level, especially low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level, protects cardiovascular system and prevents cardiovascular events effectively. Maintaining cho…

Chimeric Antigen Receptor Regulatory T Cells Targeted Against Oxidized Low-Density Lipoprotein Reduce Atherosclerotic Plaque Development.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease caused by atherosclerosis is responsible for 18 million deaths annually, highlighting a need for new medical therapies, especially for patients who are not eligible for percutaneous intervention. Atherosclerosis is driven by the accumulation of low-density lipoprotein and the formation of foam cells, accompanied by oxidative stress and the accumulation of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OxLDL), a proinflammatory molecule. Lowering low-density lipoprotein levels is the mainstay of current treatment, along with blood pressure control and lifestyle changes, bu…

Gene regulatory network analysis identifies auranofin as an anti-atherosclerotic drug.

Gene-regulatory networks (GRNs) offer a mechanistic framework for dissecting the complex molecular and genetic architecture of coronary artery disease and for identifying new therapeutic opportunities. Here, we present a GRN-driven drug-repurposing strategy that integrates transcriptional signatures induced by silencing key drivers of the human arterial wall foam cell regulator GRN 42 with drug-induced gene expression profiles from the NIH LINCS program. In vitro screening of top candidate compounds validates the computational predictions, identifying candidate foam cell modulators and showing

Verruciform xanthoma in an epithelial nevus.

Verruciform xanthoma is an unusual lesion that was initially reported in 1971. Clinically, it is a verrucous, vascular, epithelial plaque or papillomatous growth commonly found on oral or mucosal tissues. Histologically, it is characterized by a verruciform epithelium with abundant parakeratosis and by foam cells occupying the vascularized dermal papillae. This is the second extramucosal verruciform xanthoma reported. Our patient had several unique features. She is the youngest patient described to date, her lesion is the largest reported, and the lesion occurred in an epithelial nevus-type er…

New research avenues in toxicology: 7-gas N-Gas Model, toxicant suppressants, and genetic toxicology.

Three research areas -- a 7-gas N-Gas Model, toxicant suppressants, and genetic toxicology -- are presented as new research approaches in toxicology. The current 6-gas N-Gas Model predicts the toxic potency of the combustion products of materials based on the toxicological interactions of the fire gases carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), low oxygen (O2) concentrations, hydrogen cyanide (HCN), hydrogen chloride, and hydrogen bromide. The present research includes nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in a new 7-gas model which incorporates the synergistic effects of NO2 and CO2, the antagonistic effe

Radiation Cross-Linked Polyurethane/Aluminum Hydroxide Composites with High Strength, Self-Healing, Thermal Insulation, and Flame Retardancy.

Despite the demand for polymer-based porous materials offering both high thermal insulation and flame retardancy, hurdles remain in fabricating low thermal conductivity foams and achieving satisfactory fire-retardant efficiency. We successfully loaded the environmentally friendly flame-retardant agent aluminum hydroxide (ATH) in polyurethane (PU) foam and simultaneously constructed radiation cross-linked structure to obtain polyurethane/aluminum hydroxide (PU/ATH-X) foams, achieving efficient insulation and flame-retardant properties. With a low expansion ratio of 9.4, the thermal conductivity

Menaquinone-4 inhibits the formation and vulnerability of atherosclerotic plaques in apolipoprotein E knockout mice by decreasing the uptake of the oxidized low-density lipoprotein in macrophages.

Menaquinone-4 (MK-4), a subtype of vitamin K2 (VK2), is associated with bone metabolism, blood coagulation and anti-inflammation. Atherosclerosis develops and progresses as oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) uptake in macrophages via scavenger receptors, leading to the formation of foam cells and vulnerable plaques. However, the effects of MK-4 on macrophages in atherosclerosis and on oxLDL uptake in macrophages remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of MK-4 on atherosclerotic plaque formation and vulnerability, focusing on macrophage function and plaque stability. In apolip…

Isovaleroylbinankadsurin A ameliorates atherosclerosis and restenosis by promoting LXRα signaling pathway and inhibiting TGF-β1 and FHL1 signaling pathways.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis is a leading factor in the development of several cardiovascular conditions, including ischemic heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. A defining characteristic of atherosclerosis is the formation of macrophages and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs)-derived foam cells in plaques. Angioplasty can effectively remove atherosclerotic plaque, while it may lead to restenosis. A crucial pathological feature of restenosis is neointimal formation, which is driven by the phenotypic change, growth, and migration of VSMCs. Nonetheless, there are only a handf…

Nitric oxide‑releasing porous titanium foams fabricated by scalable sintering-dissolution process for antibiofilm activity and cytocompatibility.

Orthopaedic implants require surfaces that resist bacterial colonisation while supporting host cell compatibility. In this study, we fabricated highly interconnected porous titanium (Ti) foams using a cost‑effective sintering-dissolution process (SDP) and functionalised them with 11‑aminoundecyltriethoxysilane (AUTES) and covalently tethered N-diazeniumdiolate nitric oxide (NO) donors. Structural characterisation by Scanning electron microscopy, X‑ray micro‑CT, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analyses confirmed a hierarchical porous architecture with ~ 73% total porosity and extensive internal surf

Technical Feasibility of Custom-Fabricated Auxetic Foam Insoles for Plantar Pressure Redistribution: An Exploratory Pilot and Bootstrap Resampling Investigation.

Peripheral neuropathy degrades gait mechanics, elevating peak plantar pressures (PPP) and tissue ulceration risks. This exploratory pilot study evaluates custom orthotics using thermo-mechanically synthesized re-entrant auxetic foam insoles with targeted dome-shaped inserts. Bilateral dynamic gait analysis was conducted across a heterogeneous cohort (N = 9) utilizing a P-Walk 600 pressure plate and a MARVUE 2D motion capture system inside standardized footwear. To address small-sample limits, a non-parametric bootstrap resampling analysis (B = 1000) was executed. Native auxetic foam demonstrat

Deficiency of the NR4A orphan nuclear receptor NOR1 in hematopoietic stem cells accelerates atherosclerosis.

The NR4A orphan nuclear receptor NOR1 functions as a constitutively active transcription factor regulating cellular inflammation and proliferation. In this study, we used bone marrow transplantation to determine the selective contribution of NOR1 expression in hematopoietic stem cells to the development of atherosclerosis. Reconstitution of lethally irradiated apoE(-/-) mice with NOR1-deficient hematopoietic stem cells accelerated atherosclerosis formation and macrophage recruitment following feeding a diet enriched in saturated fat. NOR1 deficiency in hematopoietic stem cells induced splenome
