Polymethyl-Methacrylate Hypersensitivity with Associated Folliculitis Decalvans After Cranioplasty: A Case Report.

Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) has been routinely used as bone cement, being well tolerated by most patients. The authors report the case of a 42-year-old patient that underwent cranioplasty with PMMA prosthesis, that reported progressive and persistent skin symptoms starting 45 days after surgery. Dermatologic evaluation revealed an extensive reddish scar plaque, associated with polytrichia and alopecia, located only in the left parieto-occipital region, above the PMMA cranioplasty. Scalp biopsy and bone cement specific patch test revealed both folliculitis decalvans (FD) and weak PMMA hypers…

Exploring fluorescent light energy as management option for canine superficial bacterial folliculitis.

Superficial bacterial folliculitis (SBF) represents a common dermatological diagnosis in dogs that can be successfully managed with either topical and/or systemic treatments. In the present study we evaluated the efficacy of a fluorescent light energy (FLE) device as sole management for SBF. The same FLE device has been shown, as adjunct therapy to systemic antibiotic or alone, to effectively control clinical manifestation of interdigital furunculosis. Twenty dogs were randomized to receive FLE once (six dogs) or twice (six dogs) weekly in comparison with oral anti-biotic (eight dogs) until co…

Canine superficial bacterial folliculitis: current understanding of its etiology, diagnosis and treatment.

Superficial bacterial folliculitis (SBF) is more common in the dog than other mammalian species. Until recently, a successful outcome in cases of canine SBF was possible by administering a potentiated amoxicillin, a first generation cephalosporin or a potentiated sulfonamide. Unfortunately, this predictable susceptibility has changed, because methicillin resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) and Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are becoming more prevalent in canine SBF cases. The increasing frequency of multidrug resistance complicates the selection of antimicrobial therapy. Antimicrobi…

Expanding the histologic findings in smallpox-related post-vaccinial non-viral folliculitis.

Post-vaccinial non-viral folliculitis has been recognized in the past decade as a new adverse cutaneous reaction to smallpox vaccination. Contrary to more serious smallpox vaccine reactions, post-vaccinial non-viral folliculitis has a benign course and resolves spontaneously within approximately 7 days. We describe additional histopathologic findings associated with post-vaccinial non-viral folliculitis, which has only been described once previously. New findings include the presence of a neutrophilic or lymphohistiocytic infiltrate that is concentrated around the hair follicles. We compare ou…

Viral folliculitis. Atypical presentations of herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and molluscum contagiosum.

BACKGROUND: Viral folliculitis is an infrequently reported entity. The patients described herein were seen over a 12-year period of practice in a referral dermatologic setting. The cases involve a variety of viral infections limited to the hair follicle. OBSERVATIONS: We describe 5 patients with a variety of viral folliculitides: 2 with herpetic sycosis caused by herpes simplex; 1 with herpex simplex folliculitis (this patient also had human immunodeficiency virus); 1 with herpes zoster without blisters; and 1 with molluscum contagiosum. CONCLUSIONS: These 5 cases demonstrate that viral foll…

Refractory eosinophilic pustular folliculitis treated with tofacitinib: a case series and literature review.

Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis (EPF) is an uncommon skin condition that presents as follicular papules or pustules. The treatment of EPF is challenging because of the high relapse rates. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tofacitinib as a treatment for EPF. We present three patients with refractory EPF who were successfully treated with tofacitinib at our clinic. We also conducted a literature review using the PubMed database to gain further insight into this promising therapy. Our patients were effectively treated with tofacitinib. To the best of our knowledge, only th…

Management of folliculitis decalvans: The EADV task force on hair diseases position statement.

Folliculitis decalvans is the most common form of primary neutrophilic scarring alopecia, which is diagnosed in 2.8% of patients with hair loss. The course of the disease is typically chronic and relapsing. Thus, numerous therapies may be needed. Treatment extended beyond the resolution of the manifestations may be considered to avoid recurrences. As folliculitis decalvans is a form of scarring alopecia, the aim of any therapy is to control inflammation and prevent further hair loss. Hair regrowth cannot be expected. The aim of the EADV Task Force on Hair Diseases position statement was to pro…

Characterization and Risk Factors of Folliculitis after Hair Transplantation: A Multicenter Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative folliculitis is a common complication of hair transplantation (HT) requiring effective preventive interventions. This study characterized postoperative folliculitis and determined risk factors in patients undergoing HT. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed 1317 patients who underwent HT and completed 9-month follow-up between January of 2018 and June of 2021 at 4 medical centers. The incidence of postoperative folliculitis and demographic characteristics were assessed. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify risk factors, and the characteristics of…

Common condition with uncommon cause: fungal folliculitis in immunosuppressed patient with Blau syndrome.

We present a case of a patient with a history of Blau syndrome, who presented with acute onset of widespread florid painful folliculitis rash, which was resistant to the treatment with multiple courses of antibiotics in the community. Despite of the negative skin swab and negative periodic acid-schiff (PAS)stain on the skin biopsy, clinical diagnosis was fungal folliculitis and patient responded well to the course of itraconazole.

Erythema multiforme complicated by bacterial folliculitis in a 3-year-old Nubian goat.

Erythema multiforme is a rare hypersensitivity reaction that is reported in several domestic animal species, and not in goats. This case report describes the clinical and histopathological features of erythema multiforme and secondary bacterial skin infection in a goat.

Reflectance Confocal Microscopy Applied to Folliculitis Decalvans: Preliminary Results of a Multicenter Study.

Although trichoscopic criteria indicative of disease severity and inflammatory activity have been recently proposed, the potential use of reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) in the evaluation of the inflammatory stage of FD has never been published to date. Our study investigated RCM features of 14 patients with a histopathological diagnosis of FD, evaluating clinical and trichoscopic findings. RCM findings were divided into 2 main patterns: "follicular" and "interfollicular." Our results suggest a potential role for RCM as a noninvasive, fast technique for a complementary investigation in t
