Primary eosinophilic granuloma of frontal lobe. Diagnostic use of S-100 protein.

Solitary eosinophilic granuloma of the frontal lobe of the brain is a rare lesion. A 30-year-old Jordanian man with a history of recurrent bilateral chronic middle ear infections and tuberculosis presented with focal seizures. A solitary right frontotemporal mass was diagnosed by brain biopsy as an eosinophilic granuloma. Immunoperoxidase stains of virtually all histiocytes in the lesion were strongly positive for S-100. Four cases of eosinophilic granuloma and one of Letterer-Siwe disease were also examined, and virtually all histiocytes demonstrated strong S-100 positivity. In comparison, 24

The neural correlates of grit: Frontal lobe activity in grit effort and interest.

Prior research has linked left frontal activity to well-being and right frontal activity to regulatory control, both of which relate to grit, leaving the frontal profile of grit unclear. The present study examined resting-state frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) and frontal alpha power in relation to grit, self-control, and conscientiousness in 76 young adults. Using 8-13 Hz alpha activity with average reference and following CSD transformation, we identified neural patterns for grit components and associated constructs: grit-effort and conscientiousness were associated with reduced right frontal c

Primary cerebral melanoma of the frontal lobe: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Primary cerebral melanoma is an exceedingly rare intracranial neoplasm, accounting for a minuscule fraction of all brain tumors and melanomas. Originating from melanocytes within the central nervous system, its diagnosis is one of exclusion, requiring thorough investigation to rule out metastatic disease from cutaneous, uveal, or mucosal primary sites. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 58-year-old male who presented with a recent onset of headaches and right lower limb weakness. Neuroimaging revealed a large, solitary, hemorrhagic mass measuring 5 × 5 cm in the left frontal lobe w

Stereo-EEG features of temporal and frontal lobe seizures with loss of consciousness.

The loss of consciousness (LOC) during seizures is one of the most striking features that significantly impact the quality of life, even though the neuronal network involved is not fully comprehended. We analyzed the intracerebral patterns in patients with focal drug-resistant epilepsy, both with and without LOC. We assessed the localization, lateralization, stereo electroencephalography (SEEG) patterns, seizure duration, and the quantification of contacts exhibiting electrical discharge. The degree of LOC was quantified using the Consciousness Seizure Scale. Thirteen patients (40 seizures) wi

[Anterior transperiinsular approach to the head of the caudate nucleus and mediobasal frontal lobe].

BACKGROUND: The head of the caudate nucleus and adjacent mediobasal frontal lobe are deeply localized and have complex anatomical and topographic relationships with surrounding functionally significant cerebral structures. These aspects determine difficult surgical treatment of pathology in this zone. OBJECTIVE: To propose a new anterior transperiinsular approach for optimizing surgical access to the head of the caudate nucleus and mediobasal frontal lobe. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two patients with cavernoma of the head of the caudate nucleus and oligodendroglioma of the head of the caudate nuc

Unilateral akathisia and choreoathetosis as an unusual presentation of a frontal lobe dermoid cyst.

OBJECTIVE: To consider an unusual presentation of a frontal lobe dermoid cyst. Intracranial masses very rarely present with movement disorders. We describe a highly unusual presentation of an intracranial dermoid with unilateral choreoathetosis, akathisia and facial tics. MATERIAL: A 63-year-old man presented with left-sided akathisia and tardive dyskinesia of his upper limb, attributed to a dermoid cyst in the right frontal lobe. Resection of the cyst led to a complete resolution of his symptoms without neurological deficit. CONCLUSION: Pathogenic mechanisms of such symptoms may include com

The functions of the frontal lobes: Evidence from patients with focal brain damage.

Patients with focal frontal lobe damage have long been a crucial source of information about the role of this region in human behavior. This method remains the only means to provide inferentially powerful loss-of-function evidence for many regions within the human frontal lobes. This chapter demonstrates modern focal lesion research methods, focusing on specific subregions within prefrontal cortex, and their contributions to widely studied aspects of executive function and decision-making. Examples of such studies are reviewed in detail, to demonstrate the strengths, limitations, and logic of

Widespread frontal lobe cortical dysplasia or partial hemimegalencephaly: a continuum of the spectrum.

Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) type II and hemimegalencephaly (HME) are currently considered as a continuum of pathology, the most important distinction being the extent or the size/volume of the lesion. While partial HME involving the posterior cortex has been well described, we present an unusual case with a dysplastic lesion of the whole frontal lobe. A 17-year-old boy had focal seizures from the age of nine years. Apart from diminished right-hand dexterity, his neurological and cognitive status were unremarkable. The course of his epilepsy exhibited a relapsing-remitting pattern, with prol

Levetiracetam efficacy on frontal lobe dysfunctions and anger rumination in patients with epilepsy.

This study compared the frontal lobe functioning and anger rumination between patients with epilepsy and healthy individuals. The second objective was to examine the efficacy of levetiracetam therapy on frontal lobe dysfunctions and anger rumination in patients with epilepsy. Participants (50 patients with epilepsy and 50 healthy individuals) completed the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) and Anger Rumination Scale (ARS). The patients had two testing sessions: pre- and post-levetiracetam therapies. The results showed that patients with epilepsy had frontal lobe dysfunctions in contrast with he

Rationale for an adjunctive therapy with fenofibrate in pharmacoresistant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE) is an idiopathic partial epilepsy with a family history in about 25% of cases, with autosomal dominant inheritance (autosomal dominant NFLE [ADNFLE]). Traditional antiepileptic drugs are effective in about 55% of patients, whereas the rest remains refractory. One of the key pathogenetic mechanisms is a gain of function of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) containing the mutated α4 or β2 subunits. Fenofibrate, a common lipid-regulating drug, is an agonist at peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) that is a lig

Obsessions appear after the removal a brain tumor in the right frontal lobe.

A series of case reports and neuroimaging research points to the underlying neuropathological substrate for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and the underlying associations between OCD and areas of the frontal lobe. We report a patient wherein the onset of OCD occurred after resection of meningioma of the right frontal lobe and who was treated successfully with paroxetine hydrochloride. We suggest that the onset of secondary (organic) OCD is associated with the frontal lobe, and we propose that the origin of obsessions is located in the right frontal lobe.

Subjective rating of working memory is associated with frontal lobe volume in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia commonly show deficits in working memory on objective neuropsychological measures, and brain imaging studies have documented neural abnormalities during performance of working memory tasks. It remains unclear to what extent such patients are able to accurately gauge the integrity of their working memory in their daily lives. AIMS: We evaluated the relationship between subjective rating of working memory integrity in daily life and volumes of the frontal, temporal, and parietal lobes in patients with schizophrenia. METHODS: Participants included 29 pati

Identification and characterization of frontal lobe degeneration: historical perspective on the development of FTD.

This is a historical account of the development of the concept frontotemporal dementia, beginning with our discovery in the late 60s of a simple degenerative form. It was named frontal lobe degeneration of non-Alzheimer type to clearly separate it from the then almost totally dominating diagnosis Alzheimer disease. In the absence of immunohistochemical methods for specific disease markers, we had to rely solely on structural features. Later, from the 80s, the successively introduced methods to show glial acidic protein, tau, synaptophysin, ubiquitin, and other markers confirmed our impression

Interobserver reliability of video recording in the diagnosis of nocturnal frontal lobe seizures.

BACKGROUND: Nocturnal frontal lobe seizures (NFLS) show one or all of the following semeiological patterns: (1) paroxysmal arousals (PA: brief and sudden recurrent motor paroxysmal behavior); (2) hyperkinetic seizures (HS: motor attacks with complex dyskinetic features); (3) asymmetric bilateral tonic seizures (ATS: motor attacks with dystonic features); (4) epileptic nocturnal wanderings (ENW: stereotyped, prolonged ambulatory behavior). OBJECTIVE: To estimate the interobserver reliability (IR) of video-recording diagnosis in patients with suspected NFLS among sleep medicine experts, epilept

The impact of extensive medial frontal lobe damage on 'Theory of Mind' and cognition.

The ability of humans to predict and explain other people's behaviour by attributing to them independent mental states, such as desires and beliefs, is considered to be due to our ability to construct a 'Theory of Mind'. Recently, several neuroimaging studies have implicated the medial frontal lobes as playing a critical role in a dedicated 'mentalizing' or 'Theory of Mind' network in human brains. Here, we report a patient, G.T., who suffered an exceptionally rare form of stroke-bilateral anterior cerebral artery infarction, without rupture or the complications associated with anterior commun

Reduced communication between frontal and temporal lobes during talking in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Communication between the frontal lobes, where speech and verbal thoughts are generated, and the temporal lobes, where they are perceived, may occur through the action of a corollary discharge. Its dysfunction may underlie failure to recognize inner speech as self-generated and account for auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia. METHODS: Electroencephalogram was recorded from 10 healthy adults and 12 patients with schizophrenia (DSM-IV) in two conditions: talking aloud and listening to their own played-back speech. Event-related electroencephalogram coherence to acoustic stimuli

Deficits in executive functions and motor coordination in children with frontal lobe epilepsy.

Frontal lobe dysfunction in adults has been associated with impairments of planning abilities, working memory, impulse control, attention and certain aspects of motor coordination. However, very few studies have attempted to assess these functions in children suffering from frontal lobe epilepsy. The aim of the present study was to determine whether some or all of the components of the frontal lobe syndrome are present in children with this disorder. For this purpose, a neuropsychological test battery was administered to 32 unresected epileptic children, aged 8-16 years: 16 with frontal lobe e

A case of the frontal lobe syndrome following head injury in Harare, Zimbabwe.

A 51 year old male, presented with recurrent outbursts of aggression, hypersexuality, sexual indiscretion and hoarding litter following a head injury sustained in a road traffic accident. His premorbid personality was described as energetic but quick tempered. He had no delusions or perceptual disturbances and cognitive functions were intact. Physical and detailed neurological examination were essentially normal, with the exception of disuse atrophy of the lower limb muscles. He lacked insight into his problems. This case illustrates the need for a multidisciplinary approach to assessment, man

[Affective disorders and dementia of the frontal lobe type. Hypothesis of a pathogenic relationship].

The evolution of some dysthymic states towards dementia is now rarely considered whereas it was well known at the beginning of the century. In French the final stage of this evolution was known as "démence vésanique". In recent years it has been noted that a proportion of patients with presenile dementia do not have Alzheimer's disease (AD) but a particular type of cognitive impairment., called dementia of the frontal lobe type (DFT), characterised by clinical and neuropsychological signs of frontal lobe disorder as well as an anterior defect of cerebral perfusion or metabolism. The onset of D
