BACKGROUND: The accuracy of diagnoses of acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFRS) based on frozen sections has been questioned.
METHODS: PubMed, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar were used for data sources. True-positive, true-negative, false-positive, and false-negative data were extracted for each study. Methodological quality was evaluated using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies 2 (QUADAS-2) Tool.
RESULTS: Nine prospective and retrospective studies were included. The diagnostic odds ratio of intra

BACKGROUND: The exact etiology of ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) is unknown, and inadequate excision of the narrow segment has been proposed as a cause of failure in 5% to 7% of cases of pyeloplasty.
AIMS: To study whether frozen section can be useful to detect normal ureter distal to UPJO during pyeloplasty.
METHODS: Histological sections from 31 patients with UPJO were analyzed for collagen to muscle ratio (CMR) on conventional (formalin) and rapid (frozen section) Masson's trichrome staining. Pathological findings were correlated with postoperative outcomes analyzed at 1-year f

PURPOSE: To determine the tumor control rate of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the eyelid margin managed by full-thickness eyelid resection with en-face frozen section-controlled margins and primary reconstruction of the defect.
METHODS: This is a retrospective, consecutive, noncomparative, longitudinal interventional case series from a single institution. A review of medical records of all patients with BCC involving the eyelid margin treated by full-thickness en-face frozen section histopathology between June 1997 and June 2011 was conducted. All cases were managed with gross full-thickness

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend full axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) whenever the SLN is positive for metastases. In our institute, we aim to complete surgery in a single setting and base the decision for ALND on the intraoperative FS analysis of the SLN. In this study, we evaluate the efficacy this practice in terms of the accuracy of FS analysis, patient recall rate, and additional time required for FS analysis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective review was performed of 586 patients who underwent SLN biopsy at our institution from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2010. Intra

Intraoperative consultation (synonym: frozen section diagnostics) has increasingly gained significance for the daily practice in head and neck surgery. The main aim of this investigation method which is usually associated with much stress and effort is to facilitate an optimal and timely oncological surgical treatment of neoplastic diseases with a minimum rate of postoperative functional disturbance. In order to achieve this purpose pathologists are expected to deliver as much correct information as possible to accurately influence intraoperative surgical decisions. At the same time this aim s

To investigate the role of frozen section assessment in sparing unnecessary orchiectomy for suspected lesions, we retrospectively reviewed intraoperative testicular and paratesticular frozen section assessments performed at our institution between the years 1993 and 2010. Frozen section assessments were performed on 45 testicular lesions (age, 5-60 [mean, 32.2] years; lesion size, 0.5-9.7 [mean, 2.1] cm) and 20 paratesticular lesions (age, 26-76 [mean, 43.5] years; lesion size, 0.4-11.0 [mean, 2.8] cm) before the decision to complete radical orchiectomy. Benign/malignant frozen section assessm

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) has become the standard treatment for patients with invasive breast cancer. Intra-operative frozen section allows for the detection of nodal metastases, thereby allowing a simultaneous axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) for those patients with nodal metastases. We herein report the accuracy of frozen section in the detection of SLN metastases.
METHODS: Patients with operable breast cancer and clinically negative axillae were recruited for SLNB. The SLNs were identified by blue dye, an isotope, or a combination. Enlarged lymph nodes that were no

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of frozen section analysis (FSA) for detecting and eliminating malignant ureteral margins at radical cystectomy (RC) and to determine the impact of final margin status obtained by a sequential resectioning strategy on the risk of upper urinary tract recurrence (UUT-R).
METHODS: A total of 425 ureteral margins obtained from 218 patients undergoing RC for invasive bladder cancer between 1999 and 2009 were initially examined by FSA. When positive, additional resections were performed. Subsequently, all specimens were reexamined on forma

OBJECTIVE: One problem existing in breast-conservation surgery is ipsilateral breast tumour recurrence, and one of its major risk factors is surgical margin positivity. We therefore investigated whether total-circumference surgical margin examination can reduce surgical margin-positive rates.
METHODS: A total of 122 cases were examined after BCS was performed between March 2004 and March 2006. After partial mastectomy, specimens were taken from the remnant breast side along the total-circumference of the mammary gland (width, approximately 5 mm). Intraoperative frozen section analysis was per

BACKGROUND: Whereas specimen radiography (SR) is an established strategy for intraoperative resection margin analysis during breast-conserving surgery for nonpalpable lesions, the use of frozen section analysis (FSA) is still a matter of debate.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of 115 consecutive operations in which the two objectives sought were the excision of nonpalpable malignant lesions and breast conservation. Breast surgery was performed in the Gynecology and the Surgery Departments at the Basel University Hospital Breast Center. Whereas one department preferably uses SR f

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the clinical significance of preoperatively-unsuspected ureteral involvement of cancer detected on intraoperative frozen section analysis of ureteral margins during radical cystectomy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 115 patients who received radical cystectomy for locally-advanced but node-negative transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder between 1995 and 2002 by reviewing their records.
RESULTS: Of 115 total patients, 5 (4.3%) demonstrated carcinoma in situ at the ureteral margin with 2 of 5 having a positive margin on final patho

This study examines the performance of the preliminary, on-site interpretation by the pathologist of fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology smears compared to the final cytology report, the frozen section diagnosis and the final histopathological report. We found that both the preliminary and the final cytology reports gave satisfactory results over the minimum standards for quality assurance required by both the Norwegian breast screening programme and the NHS BSP in the UK with the exception of the 'suspicious' rate. We noted that the preliminary report had fewer false negatives (2.1%) than t

BACKGROUND: The preferred technique for intraoperative evaluation of the sentinel lymph node has not been determined. The purpose of this study was to compare the sensitivity and accuracy of intraoperative evaluation of the sentinel lymph node by touch preparation cytology and frozen section.
METHODS: A total of 117 patients with clinically node-negative breast cancer or ductal carcinoma-in-situ undergoing sentinel lymph node biopsy had intraoperative evaluation of the sentinel node by touch preparation, frozen section, or both. The results of the intraoperative evaluation were compared with

A 59-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for hemoptysis. Chest X-ray films showed a mass shadow in the left lower lobe. Any definitive diagnosis could not be made after examinations including sputum culture and bronchial cytology. Exploratory thoracotomy was performed since malignancy was not excluded. During the operation, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma was suspected based on the pathological findings of the frozen section. The permanent section of the resected specimen contained colonies of actinomycetes in the bronchus, and the peripheral region demonstrated marked

The utility of intraoperative frozen sections for determining ureteral and urethral margin status is controversial. In this study, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of frozen section diagnosis with the corresponding final tissue diagnosis in a series of 364 patients undergoing radical cystectomy for urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder. Multiple definitions of a positive diagnosis were analyzed. We then used clinical follow-up data to determine the effect of various frozen section diagnoses, frozen/permanent section discordance, and surgical margins on overall survival and di

PURPOSE: Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) targeted prostate biopsy is still commonly combined with systematic biopsy, resulting in a high number of extracted biopsy cores. This study evaluated whether a frozen section analysis (FSA) guided biopsy strategy enabling immediate assessment of targeted biopsy and omitting systematic biopsy in case of clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa) is non-inferior to standard combined biopsy while substantially reducing the number of biopsy cores.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this prospective randomized trial, men with PI-RADS ≥ 4 lesio

BACKGROUND: Ewing sarcoma is a rare and highly aggressive pediatric bone cancer that is histologically composed of small, round blue cells. These histologic findings can make it difficult to assess intraoperative frozen section bone marrow margins because the bone marrow that regenerates after preoperative chemotherapy has a similar appearance, especially on frozen section analysis. Prior studies have more broadly questioned the utility of intraoperative assessment of bone marrow margins using frozen sections during the resection of bone sarcomas; however, to our knowledge, no prior study has

Background: Advancements in surgical management in a single-stage procedure made intraoperative frozen section biopsies critical for determining of level of resection to avoid the potential risk of leaving a retained aganglionic segment. However, in most low-income countries, due to the lack of this facility, the surgeon's intraoperative judgment is used for the determination of the resection level. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of determining the level of bowel resection in short-segment Hirschsprung's disease based on macroscopic changes. Materials and methods: Intraope
