High Frequency of Trypanosoma congolense Savannah Type (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) Among Tsetse Flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) in a Historic Trypanosoma Foci in North-Eastern Gabon: Preliminary Study [corrected].

Human African trypanosomiasis became a neglected disease after the 1960s, when case numbers dropped dramatically. It again became a public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa at the end of the 1990s, when new cases were reported, notably in Central Africa, and specifically in Gabon, where historic foci existed and new cases have been reported. Therefore, the present study reports on an entomological survey conducted in May 2012 to determine the pathogenic trypanosome infection rate in tsetse flies and characterize the diversity of Trypanosoma species in the Ivindo National Park (INP) in north…

Day-to-day variation of egg output and schistosome circulating antigens in urine of Schistosoma haematobium-infected school children from Gabon and follow-up after chemotherapy.

A group of 31 school children from Gabon infected with Schistosoma haematobium was examined before praziquantel therapy and followed on days 3, 9, 14, 21, 24, 28, 31 and 35 after therapy. The day-to-day variation of schistosome circulating antigens, urinary egg output, and the reagent strip index (RSI, a pathologic marker) was studied in six consecutive pretreatment urine samples collected under standardized conditions. The geometric mean pretreatment for egg output ranged between 97 and 223 eggs per 10 ml of urine; for urine circulating anodic antigen (CAA) levels this was 44-154 pg/ml and fo…

Filariasis due to Loa loa and Mansonella perstans: distribution in the region of Okondja, Haut-Ogooué Province, Gabon, with parasitological and serological follow-up over one year.

The prevalence of Loa loa and Mansonella perstans filariasis has been determined in 6 rural villages in eastern Gabon. Between 18.9 and 27.2% of people carry L. loa microfilariae with an overall microfilarial rate of 25.1%. The microfilarial rate for M. perstans was more variable, between 33.3 and 62.2% (average 49.1%). No significant difference was seen in the microfilarial rate with age over 15 years for either parasite, but men were infected more frequently than women. Anti-L. loa antibody titres were measured, using a homologous microfilarial antigen in ELISA. Taking the parasitological an…

Death of a one-armed blackback male due to severe injuries in a group of wild western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) in Moukalaba-Doudou National Park, Gabon.

The survival of limb-disabled primates in the wild has been widely reported. Nevertheless, their ultimate fate is little documented. It is important to understand the influence of limb disability on primate survival from a conservation perspective, as many African great apes suffer from limb injuries caused by entrapment in snares. Here, we report the death of a one-armed blackback male in a large one-male group of wild western lowland gorillas. The subject was a blackback male (14 years old) named Dodo, who lost his right forearm in August 2008. On 8 December 2019, Dodo was found to have suff

New insights into prevalence, genetic diversity, and proviral load of human T-cell leukemia virus types 1 and 2 in pregnant women in Gabon in equatorial central Africa.

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is highly endemic in areas of central Africa; mother-to-child transmission and sexual transmission are considered to be the predominant routes. To determine the prevalence and subtypes of HTLV-1/2 in pregnant women in Gabon, we conducted an epidemiological survey in the five main cities of the country. In 907 samples, the HTLV-1 seroprevalence was 2.1%, which is lower than that previously reported. Only one case of HTLV-2 infection was found. The HTLV-1 seroprevalence increased with age and differed between regions (P </= 0.05), with the highest prev…

Malaria amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in Gabon: an application of autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models within an interrupted time series (ITS) framework to hospital-based data.

BACKGROUND: Coinciding with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, malaria cases and malaria-related deaths increased globally between 2020 and 2022. However, evidence linking the pandemic to increased malaria burden remains ambiguous. We assessed the extent to which an observed malaria resurgence in Lambaréné, Gabon, can be associated with pandemic-related disruptions in malaria control programmes. METHODS: Using observational data from two tertiary referral hospitals, spanning 2018 to early 2023, we applied autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) models in an interrupted time series (ITS) framew…

Comparative Analysis of Initial Full Blood Count Parameters in Adults Infected With Plasmodium falciparum for Classification of Disease Severity and Previous Exposure Across Endemic (Gabon) and Nonendemic (Germany) Settings.

BACKGROUND: The clinical presentation of individuals infected with Plasmodium falciparum is exceptionally diverse, ranging from asymptomatic parasitemia to life-threatening disease. Frequent previous exposure to Plasmodium spp results in partial protection from severe disease; however, this protection wanes in individuals emigrating from holoendemic regions, and there are currently no reliable biomarkers that accurately indicate this semi-immunity. METHODS: Data were analyzed from 1392 adults infected with P falciparum in Gabon and Germany. Full blood count parameters and ratios were evaluate…
