This study presents a technique for gait analysis, developed for the assessment of footfall timing and speed. The system in question consists of a transmitter, a receiver, a conductive walkway and a PC with the appropriate software. The technique was first tested for accuracy and repeatability with known signals, and was validated with a group of 20 healthy male adults (mean age = 34 years, S.D. = 5.5). The results thus obtained were similar to those reported in the literature for corresponding groups. Then, measurements on 10 children suffering from cerebral palsy (spastic hemiplegia) were pe

Apraxia of gait is a unique disorder of locomotion characterized by inability in lifting the feet from the floor despite alternating stepping action (frozen gait), and disequilibrium. Responsible site of lesions are in the frontal lobe and/or the basal ganglia. It is observed in an advanced stage of Parkinson's (PD) or vascular parkinsonism with multiple cerebral infarction (MCI). Studies on equilibrium and natural gait have disclosed unique features in this condition. Records of floor reaction forces in forward locomotion showed that vertical-foreaft vector angles at kick-off phase is small i

The surface electromyogram (EMG) of leg muscles was recorded together with the changes of the angle at the ankle joint during slow gait in 10 normal children and 10 with cerebral palsy. The characteristic pattern of muscle activity recorded from the spastic legs mainly consisted of a co-activation of antagonistic leg muscles during the stance phase of a gait cycle and a general reduction in amplitude of EMG activity. The tension of the Achilles tendon, measured in 2 hemiparetic children during gait, increased much more steeply in the spastic leg than in the normal one at the beginning of the s

INTRODUCTION: Gait exercise assist robot (GEAR), a gait rehabilitation robot developed for poststroke gait disorder, has been shown to improve walking speed and to improve the poststroke gait pattern. However, the persistence of its beneficial effect has not been clarified. In this matched case-control study, we assessed the durability of the effectiveness of GEAR training in patients with subacute stroke on the basis of clinical evaluation and three-dimensional (3D) gait analysis.
METHODS: Gait data of 10 patients who underwent GEAR intervention program and 10 patients matched for age, heigh

INTRODUCTION: Dizziness and imbalance from vestibular dysfunction may lead to gait disorientation and impaired construction of mental maps needed for spatial navigation. The Gait Disorientation Test (GDT), consisting of two components, walking eyes open (WEO) and walking eyes closed (WEC), can identify gait disorientation. We aimed to examine associations between the GDT and measures that reflect aspects of spatial navigation.
METHODS: 40 adults (20 with vestibular hypofunction, 20 controls) recruited from the community completed the GDT, Sensory Organization Test (SOT), Activities-specific B

There is limited evidence about gait stability and its alteration by concurrent motor and cognitive tasks in children with cerebral palsy (CP). We examined gait stability and how it is altered by constrained cognitive or motor task in CP and their typically developed (TD) controls. Gait kinematics were recorded using inertial-measurement units (IMU) from 18 patients with hemiplegia (13.5 ± 2.4 years), 12 with diplegia (13.0 ± 2.1 years), and 31 TD controls (13.5 ± 2.2 years) during unconstrained gait, and motor (carrying a tray) and cognitive (word naming) task constrained gait at preferred sp

PURPOSE: Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCP) severely limits the range of hip motion and hinders a normal gait. Loading of the hip joint is a major consideration in LCP treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate gait patterns in LCP and identify gait modifications to decrease the load on the affected hip.
METHODS: Forty children with unilateral LCP were divided into three groups based on the time base integral of the hip abductor moments during single stance on the affected side acquired during instrumented 3D gait analysis. X-rays of the affected hip were classified according to Herring a

The study aimed at further development of a mechanised gait trainer which would allow non-ambulant people to practice a gait-like motion repeatedly. To simulate normal gait, discrete stance and swing phases, lasting 60% and 40% of the gait cycle respectively, and the control of the movement of the centre of mass were required. A complex gear system provided the gait-like movement of two foot plates with a ratio of 60% to 40% between the stance and swing phases. A controlled propulsion system adjusted its output according to patient's efforts. Two eccenters on the central gear controlled phase-

The purpose of this study was to determine whether applying a targeted downward perturbation force at the pelvis during walking would facilitate motor adaptation for improving crouch gait in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Twelve children with CP who walk with crouch gait participated in a one-visit study consisting of treadmill walking with three force conditions, i.e., early-stance, mid-stance, and constant. Each session consisted of 1 min of walking with no force (baseline), 7 min with force (adaptation), and 2 min with no force (postadaptation). For the early-stance and mid-stance condi

[Purpose] This study aimed to determine whether a common left-right asymmetry exists in frontal plane movement during gait and to explore its relationship with resting standing posture. [Participants and Methods] Twenty-five healthy adult male participants with no history of surgery were assessed during standing and gait using a three-dimensional motion analysis system. The maximum lateral movement of the trunk and center of mass, peak of the vertical ground reaction force, and lateral position of the center of pressure were compared between the left and right stance phases. The relationship b

Gait health is a key indicator of physical well-being and quality of life. Individuals with movement disorders, e.g., those with Parkinson's Disease (PD), often exhibit abnormal gait marked by Freezing of Gait (FoG) episodes, which is a debilitating symptom. This manifests itself in terms of variability in one's gait, which can aggravate with an increase in task complexity. In this study, we used GaitSense, a wearable device consisting of shoes with instrumented insoles integrated with Inertial Measurement Units to quantify one's gait in terms of spatial and temporal gait parameters. These gai

BACKGROUND: Gait disturbance is one of the most disabling symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). In particular, freezing of gait (FOG) is a major cause of falls and significantly impairs the activities of daily living. Neither drug therapy nor current neuromodulation therapy are effective against FOG in most patients, so the development of new treatments is needed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This pilot study investigated the effects and safety of neuromodulation by single session anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the cerebral cortex (supplementary motor area [S

The limb amputations caused due to emergent incidents of trauma injuries and vascular diseases currently represent crucial global problems. The patients/amputees with limb amputation who lost the residual limb (knee-ankle foot system) must depend on the prosthetic limb. Prosthetic clinicians and technicians have attempted to develop optimal limb prosthetics that will enhance the ability and functional elements of the patients/users. However, the amputees still do not gain the same level of comfort and functional stability as compared to normal limbs (without amputation). Thus, to provide that

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures (DRF) commonly occur in early postmenopausal females as the first fragility fracture. Although the incidence of DRF in this set of patients may be related to a lower ability to control their balance and gait, the detailed gait characteristics of DRF patients have not been examined.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Is it possible to identify the physical and gait features of DRF patients using in-shoe inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors at various gait speeds and to develop a machine learning (ML) algorithm to estimate patients with DRF using gait?
METHODS: In this c

BACKGROUND: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is the most common cause of permanent serious physical disability in childhood. Although many platforms have been developed, so far there are still not precise guidelines for the rehabilitation of the population with CP. The CPWalker is a robotic platform for the rehabilitation of children with CP, through which they can start experiencing autonomous locomotion in the rehabilitation environment. It allows the possibility of free movement and includes physical and cognitive interfaces into the therapy. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the effects of

This study in Parkinson's disease examined how spatiotemporal parameters in gait bradykinesia link to difficulty in terminating posture and initiating gait locomotion. 41 idiopathic Parkinson's disease patients and 15 age-matched healthy subjects participated in this study. After the patients fixated on a visual-fixation-target, gait was triggered by visual or vocal cue-stimulus. The LED instructed subjects to quickly achieve their own comfortable walking speed on a level floor. The posterior-anterior force of the y-axis vectors of sole relating to soleus and tibialis-anterior EMGs were examin
