From the beginning of radiotherapy, efforts have been made to improve the therapeutic effects X-rays by heat. Recently, the combined therapy of heat and X-ray therapy has gained new interest because of failures of the megavoltage therapy of solid malignant tumors. Encouraged by our own animal experiments with a Walker-tumor of rats, since 1972 we have treated 52 patients with tumors of lower sensitivity. We used decimeter waves; wave length of 69 cm and a frequency of 433.92 MHz. After preheating for 3 to 5 min we added the gamma-rays of Caesium-137 or Cobalt-60 in usual rhythms. The total dos

Despite considerable interest in enhancing, preserving, and rehabilitating working memory (WM), efforts to elicit sustained behavioral improvements have been met with limited success. Here, we paired WM training with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the frontoparietal network over four days. Active tDCS enhanced WM performance by modulating interactions between frontoparietal theta oscillations and gamma activity, as measured by pre- and post-training high-density electroencephalography (EEG). Increased phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) between the prefrontal stimulation site and

This investigation tested the hypothesis that the degree of pyridoxine depletion rather than the status of neuronal maturity determines seizure proneness in the pyridoxine-deficient rat. Dietary pyridoxine deficiency was induced in neuronally mature rats. Seizure activity was monitored using computerized EEG analysis. Dietary pyridoxine deficiency of 10 weeks' duration induced in neuronally mature rats led to spontaneous convulsive seizure activity. Even moderately pyridoxine-deficient adult rats (on the deficient diet for less than 8 weeks) exhibited seizure-like diffuse spike and wave activi

Dysfunction of neuronal networks such as aberrant excitability and disrupted oscillatory activity, especially within theta and gamma bands, in memory-related areas including the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, is increasingly recognized as an important contributor to cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this context, targeting network dysfunction via gamma sensory entrainment, such as 40 Hz auditory stimulation, has emerged as a promising non-invasive therapeutic approach; however, the therapeutic mechanisms by which 40 Hz auditory stimulation ameliorates network-level defic

OBJECTIVE: Investigate transient, non-averaged electroencephalography (EEG) signals in the gamma frequency band during an auditory chirp paradigm in individuals with Fragile X syndrome (FXS), a population characterized by elevated background gamma power, and to assess their relationship with clinical features.
METHODS: Source-localized EEG responses to auditory chirp stimulus were studied in 36 individuals with FXS and 39 typically developing controls (TDC). Transient high-power gamma-band events were extracted using a thresholding approach. Gamma event properties were compared between groups

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the effects of acute aerobic exercise on gait function and cortical activity during single and dual-task walking in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD).
METHODS: Thirty PwPD were randomly assigned to the Experimental (EG) and Control Group (CG). Both groups completed a single 40-minute session of cycling. Exercise intensity was maintained at 65-70% of the maximum heart rate for EG and within 5% of the resting heart rate for CG. Participants performed five walking trials under each condition before and after exercise. EEG and accelerometers measured cortic

OBJECTIVE: A non-invasive measure of cerebral motor system dysfunction would be valuable as a biomarker in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Task-based magnetoencephalography (tMEG) measures the magnetic fields generated by cortical neuronal oscillatory activity during task performance. Gamma activations are periods of high-power and high-frequency cortical oscillations integral to motor control.
METHODS: tMEG was undertaken during 60 bilateral isometric hand grip exercises in ALS (n = 42) and compared with healthy controls (HC, n = 33). Gamma activation spread (GAS) was estimated by calcu

Goal-directed visual attention is a fundamental cognitive function that engages multiple brain regions, yet the neural circuit mechanisms in humans remain unclear. We addressed this question by simultaneously recording neural activity from the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and medial frontal cortex (MFC) during a goal-directed visual search task. We found that gamma-band synchronization between the MTL and MFC signaled target detection. Using two additional tasks, we dissociated the neural processes underlying working memory and search decision execution, revealing distinct patterns of synchroniz

Gamma-band and single-unit neural activity in primary motor cortex are involved in the control of movement. This activity is disrupted in Parkinson's disease (PD) and levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID), a debilitating consequence of dopamine replacement therapy for PD. Physiological features of LID include pathological narrowband gamma oscillations, finely tuned gamma and altered primary motor cortex firing activity. Given that most studies characterize LID through visual scoring, little is known about the relationships between ongoing dyskinetic movements, gamma and neuronal activity at fast (

Parkinson's disease is associated with abnormal oscillatory electrical activities of neurons and neuronal ensembles throughout the basal ganglia-thalamocortical network. It has recently been documented in patients with advanced parkinsonism that the amplitude of gamma-band oscillations (50-200 Hz) in electrocorticogram recordings from the primary motor cortex is abnormally coupled to the phase of beta band oscillations within the same signals. It is not known when in the course of the disease the abnormal phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) arises, and whether it is influenced by arousal or prior e

Conscious perception occurs within less than 1 s. To study events on this time scale we used direct electrical recordings from the human cerebral cortex during a conscious visual perception task. Faces were presented at individually titrated visual threshold for 9 subjects while measuring broadband 40-115 Hz gamma power in a total of 1621 intracranial electrodes widely distributed in both hemispheres. Surface maps and k-means clustering analysis showed initial activation of visual cortex for both perceived and non-perceived stimuli. However, only stimuli reported as perceived then elicited a f

Visually induced gamma-band activity (GBA) has been implicated in several central cognitive functions, in particular perceptual binding, the feedforward routing of attended stimulus information and memory encoding. Several studies have documented that the strength and frequency of GBA are influenced by both subject-intrinsic factors like age, and subject-extrinsic factors such as stimulus contrast. Here, we investigated the relative contributions of previously tested factors, additional factors, and their interactions, in a cohort of 158 subjects recorded with magnetoencephalography (MEG). In

The circadian clock in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) is composed of thousands of oscillator neurons, each dependent on the cell-autonomous action of a defined set of circadian clock genes. A major question is still how these individual oscillators are organized into a biological clock that produces a coherent output capable of timing all the different daily changes in behavior and physiology. We investigated which anatomical connections and neurotransmitters are used by the biological clock to control the daily release pattern of a number of hormones. The picture that emerged shows projecti

A cardinal symptom of seasonal affective disorder (SAD, also known as winter depression) is hypersomnolence, while the cause of this 'winter sleepiness' is not known. Here, we found that lack of the circadian photoreceptor cryptochrome (cry) leads to increased sleep under short winter-like days in the fruit fly Drosophila, reminiscent of the hypersomnolence in SAD. CRY functions in neurons that synthesize the major inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, including the small ventral lateral neurons, which are known to be circadian pacemakers, and downregulates the GABAergic tone. This, in turn, leads

Perinatal exposure to different photoperiods can lead to differences in behaviour and sleep during adulthood. Information about acute photoperiod is first processed in the brain through the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), the primary brain nuclei responsible for circadian rhythms. In these nuclei, the photoperiodic information is coded and related to the excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) balance of GABA. We investigated in mice, whether behavioural effects of perinatal photoperiod (PNP) in adulthood are represented in a difference in the E/I balance in SCN cells. We exposed males and females to a shor

INTRODUCTION: Gamma-band oscillations (30-200 Hz) support cognitive functions such as memory, perception, and decision-making, which are often impaired in neuropsychiatric disorders including schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. These disorders show distinct gamma abnormalities that are promising targets for transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). However, phase-specific adaptation of stimulation to ongoing gamma activity has long been considered unfeasible due to the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of non-invasive recordings and stimulation-related artifac

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by impaired inhibitory circuitry and GABAergic dysfunction, which is associated with reduced fast brain oscillations in the gamma band (γ, 30-90 Hz) in several animal models. Investigating such activity in human patients could lead to the identification of novel biomarkers of diagnostic and prognostic value. The current study aimed to test a multimodal "Perturbation-based" transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation-Electroencephalography (tACS)-EEG protocol to detect how responses to tACS in AD patients correlate with patients' clinical p

How we combine minimal linguistic units into larger structures remains an unresolved topic in neuroscience. Language processing involves the abstract construction of 'vertical' and 'horizontal' information simultaneously (e.g., phrase structure, morphological agreement), but previous paradigms have been constrained in isolating only one type of composition and have utilized poor spatiotemporal resolution. Using intracranial recordings, we report multiple experiments designed to separate phrase structure from morphosyntactic agreement. Epilepsy patients (n = 10) were presented with auditory two

Cooperative interactions profoundly shape individual and collective behaviors of social animals. Successful cooperation requires coordinated efforts by cooperators toward collective goals. However, the underlying behavioral dynamics and neuronal mechanisms within and between cooperating brains remain largely unknown. We recorded intracranial electrophysiological signals from human pairs engaged in a cooperation game. We show that teammate coordination and goal pursuit make distinct contributions to the behavioral cooperation dynamics. Increases and decreases in high-gamma activity in the tempo

Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have difficulties in social interactions. Studying brain activity during social interactions is difficult with conventional artificial stimuli. This pioneering study examined the neural correlates of social perception in children with ADHD and matched controls using naturalistic stimuli. We presented 20 children with ADHD and 20 age-and-sex-matched controls with tailored movies featuring high- or low-level social interactions while recording electroencephalographic signals. Both groups exhibited synchronized gamma-band oscillations,
