Lung transplantation delays gastric motility in patients without prior gastrointestinal surgery-A single-center experience of 412 consecutive patients.

PURPOSE: To examine the impact of lung transplantation on gastric motility. METHODS: Adult recipients at a large, single center, who were retrospectively evaluated with solid gastric emptying (SGE) study post-lung transplantation, but had no history of gastrointestinal intervention (ie, pyloroplasty or fundoplication), were selected between June 2005 and August 2013. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to determine risk factors associated with delayed gastric emptying (DGE) after transplantation. RESULTS: Delayed gastric emptying (DGE) was noted in 236 patients (57%) after transp

GLP-1 suppresses gastrointestinal motility and inhibits the migrating motor complex in healthy subjects and patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is released after food intake to act as an incretin. GLP-1 also inhibits gastric emptying and increases satiety. In rats, GLP-1 inhibits small bowel motility. Our aim was to study the effects of GLP-1 on gastrointestinal motility in healthy subjects and patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Antro-duodeno-jejunal manometry was carried out during a 4-h control period with saline, followed by a 4-h period with intravenous GLP-1 (healthy: 0.7 and 1.2 pmol kg(-1) min(-1) (n = 16); IBS, 1.2 and 2.5 pmol kg(-1) min(-1) (n = 14). Plasma was analysed for GLP-1 an…

The mechanism of transcutaneous gastric pacing treatment on gastrointestinal motility recovery and inflammation improvement in early-stage acute pancreatitis patients.

PURPOSE: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is often accompanied by gastrointestinal motility disorders. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy and possible mechanism of transcutaneous gastric pacing (TGP) in early-stage AP patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-five AP patients were randomly divided into conventional treatment group and TGP group. The serum ghrelin and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) were used to assess the possible gastrointestinal hormonal mechanism involved. The parameters of electrogastrogram (EGG) were used to evaluate the gastric motility in AP patients. Th…

Research progress on the regulation of interstitial cell of Cajal autophagy and apoptosis crosstalk by traditional Chinese medicine in gastrointestinal motility disorders.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Gastrointestinal motility disorders (GMD) severely impact quality of life, with rising global prevalence linked to modern dietary and lifestyle changes. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), rooted in the "holistic regulation" philosophy and centuries of empirical application, demonstrates unique advantages in restoring gastrointestinal homeostasis. Historical records and modern clinical practices validate the efficacy of herbal compounds, bioactive phytochemicals, and external therapies in modulating intestinal pacemaker systems. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aim…

Effects of black garlic on the pacemaker potentials of interstitial cells of Cajal in murine small intestine in vitro and on gastrointestinal motility in vivo.

Black garlic (BG) is a newly explored food stuff obtained via fermentation of raw, healthy garlic, especially in Asian countries. Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) are the pacemaker cells of gastrointestinal (GI) motility. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of BG extract on the pacemaker potentials of the ICC in the small intestines of mice and the possibility of controlling GI motility. The antioxidant activity of BG extract was also investigated. The whole-cell electrophysiological method was used to measure pacemaker potentials of the ICC in vitro, whereas GI motility

[Analysis on the gastrointestinal motility disorder of gastroesophageal reflux disease and the mechanism of acupuncture-moxibustion from the perspective of autonomic nervous system].

From the perspective of autonomic nervous system, this paper analyzes the mechanism, current western medicine treatment methods and acupuncture-moxibustion treatment mechanism of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is believed that the main cause of GERD is that the gastric acid goes to the wrong place due to gastrointestinal motility disorder, which belongs to "acid dislocation". At present, western medical treatment cannot effectively target the pathogenesis of the disease, and its effect is limited. Acupuncture-moxibustion could regulate the neuroendocrine immune network to regulate …

Low Buffer Capacity and Alternating Motility along the Human Gastrointestinal Tract: Implications for in Vivo Dissolution and Absorption of Ionizable Drugs.

In this study, we determined the pH and buffer capacity of human gastrointestinal (GI) fluids (aspirated from the stomach, duodenum, proximal jejunum, and mid/distal jejunum) as a function of time, from 37 healthy subjects after oral administration of an 800 mg immediate-release tablet of ibuprofen (reference listed drug; RLD) under typical prescribed bioequivalence (BE) study protocol conditions in both fasted and fed states (simulated by ingestion of a liquid meal). Simultaneously, motility was continuously monitored using water-perfused manometry. The time to appearance of phase III contrac

β1/2 or M2/3 Receptors Are Required for Different Gastrointestinal Motility Responses Induced by Acupuncture at Heterotopic or Homotopic Acupoints.

Acupuncture at homotopic acupoints or heterotopic acupoints is known to either inhibit or facilitate gastrointestinal motility, depending on the acupoint location. However, little effort has been made to investigate the roles of specific receptors (such as adrenergic and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors) in mediating the effects of acupuncture at heterotopic and homotopic acupoints. Different adrenergic receptor subtypes or cholinergic receptor subtypes are predominantly expressed in various sections of the gut, resulting in variations between the effects of acupuncture at heterotopic or hom…

Precision Endoscopy in Peroral Myotomies for Motility Disorders of the Upper Gastrointestinal Tract: Current Insights and Prospective Avenues-A Comprehensive Review.

Our review delves into the realm of peroral endoscopic myotomies (POEMs) in the upper gastrointestinal tract (UGT). In recent years, POEMs have brought about a revolution in the treatment of UGT motility disorders. Esophageal POEM, the first to be introduced, has now been validated as the primary treatment for achalasia. Subsequently developed, G-POEM displays promising results in addressing refractory gastroparesis. Over time, multiple endoscopic myotomy techniques have emerged for the treatment of Zenker's diverticulum, including Z-POEM, POES, and hybrid approaches. Despite the well-establis

A Systematic Review on the Efficacy and Safety of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors in Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders: More Control, Less Risk.

Gastrointestinal motility disorders have been thought to occur due to an imbalance in the interaction of the gut-brain axis, which is regulated by serotonin. This recent discovery can be exploited to find newer therapeutic agents such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors for functional gastrointestinal disorders. PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), and Medline databases were used to obtain the data. Meta-analyses, systematic reviews, randomized control trials, and reviews were included and analyzed in the data. Of the 19240 studies, 23 were extracted, and after appropriate quality assessment, …

[Effects of bromazepam on responses of mucosal blood flow of the gastrointestinal tract and the gastric motility to stimulation of the amygdala and hypothalamus in conscious cats].

Electrical stimulation (ES) of the nucleus amygdaloideus centralis ( NAmC ) and basolateralis ( NAmBL ), like norepinephrine, decreased mucosal blood flow of the gastric antrum and duodenum and decreased antral motility amplitude in gallamine-immobilized cats. ES of the nucleus lateralis hypothalami (NHL) less extensively produced a similar action. The NAmC stimulation elevated BP and renal sympathetic discharges, whereas the NAmBL stimulation lowered BP. These findings indicate that the gastric and pressor responses to the NAmC stimulation may be attributed to an increase in cerebral sympathe

[The effect of intravenous prostaglandin F 2 alpha on the motility of the gastrointestinal tracts after major abdominal surgery (author's transl)].

TThe effect of prostaglandin F 2 alpha was studied clinically and electromyographically on the motility of the gastric antrum, duodenum, jejunum, ileum and transverse colon in 20 patients by giving 2 hours intravenous drip infusion at 0.3 approximately 0.5 microgram/kg/min for 2 hours after major abdominal surgery. Folling results were obtained. 1. The motility of stomach and colon was least active than any other site of alimentary tract during 48 hours after surgery. This seems to be one of the most important causes of so called postoperative ileus. 2. Recovery from reflex inhibition of motil

The probiotic fermented milk of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei JY062 and Lactobacillus gasseri JM1 alleviates constipation via improving gastrointestinal motility and gut microbiota.

Constipation is directly related to the intestinal microenvironment, in which the promotion of gastrointestinal (GI) motility and improvement of gut microbiota distribution are important for alleviating symptoms. Herein, after the intervention of probiotic fermented milk (FMMIX) containing Lacticaseibacillus paracasei JY062 and Lactobacillus gasseri JM1 for 14 d in Kunming mice with loperamide-induced constipation, the results indicated that FMMIX significantly increased the secretion of serum motilin, gastrin and 5-hydroxytryptamine, as well as decreased the secretion of peptide YY, vasoactiv
