Batterer typologies: substance use, impulsivity and results of an IPVAW offender treatment program in Spain.

INTRODUCTION: Batterer impulsivity and substance use are relevant factors in the study of gender violence. Impulsivity is defined by the tendency to act suddenly and without forethought. Combined with drunkenness, it can materially increase the likelihood of intimate partner violence. METHODS: The present study examines substance use and impulsivity among a sample of 243 men convicted of IPVAW offences under the Spanish Gender Violence Act (Organic Law 1/2004) in relation to the levels of violence and psychopathologies presented by these perpetrators, in order to understand the results of cou

Disclosure bias for group versus individual reporting of violence amongst conflict-affected adolescent girls in DRC and Ethiopia.

Methodologies to measure gender-based violence (GBV) have received inadequate attention, especially in humanitarian contexts where vulnerabilities to violence are exacerbated. This paper compares the results from individual audio computer-assisted self-administered (ACASI) survey interviews with results from participatory social mapping activities, employed with the same sample in two different post-conflict contexts. Eighty-seven internally displaced adolescent girls from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and 78 Sudanese girls living in Ethiopian refugee camps were interviewed using the tw

Gender differences in the association between housing status and violence among people who report exposure to benzodiazepines.

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepine exposure through the contaminated unregulated drug supply is associated with heightened risk of violent victimization, particularly for women. It is critical to identify the structural factors that intersect with drug toxicity and condition vulnerability to violence. As such, we conducted a gender-based analysis of the impacts of stable housing on violence among a sample of people exposed to benzodiazepines. METHODS: Using data from 724 participants who reported suspected exposure to benzodiazepines (SEB) from three prospective cohorts of people who use drugs in Van

Gender differences in cyber dating violence among adolescents and young adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Despite the growing body of research on cyber dating violence, a comprehensive understanding of gender differences in cyber-violent behaviors across developmental stages remains limited. The main purpose of this meta-analytic review was to estimate the direction and magnitude of gender differences in cyber dating violence perpetration and victimization by synthesizing results from various studies. The second purpose of this study was to examine the effect of potential moderators (i.e., continent, age, grade level, time frame, method of survey administration, the metric of the outcome, study de

Exploring the relationship between spousal violence during pregnancy and subsequent postpartum spacing contraception among first-time mothers in India.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing body of research exploring how intimate partner violence affects contraceptive decision-making, recognizing that these decisions are reflective not only of access and acceptability, but also spousal power imbalances. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of knowledge regarding contraceptive choices following gender-based violence during pregnancy. There are an estimated 7·8 million in India affected by violence during pregnancy, and an ongoing, heavy reliance on female sterilization as the dominant form of contraception. This study examines the relationship between ab

Psycho-social profile of battered women in Galicia, Spain: Distress as a result of intimate partner violence and child abuse.

In Spain, a country of great cultural diversity, there is an increasing demand for psychosocial care for victims of gender-based violence. The objective is to describe the psychosocial profile of these women residing in the Autonomous Community of Galicia. In a sample (n = 40) of victims of intimate partner violence, it was found a high incidence of PTSD, depression, and low self-esteem associated with greater severity of PTSD and depression. A prolonged relationship increases the types of violence experienced, which is associated with particular psychosocial conditions that are analyzed quant

Importance of gender and attitudes about violence in the relationship between exposure to interparental violence and the perpetration of teen dating violence.

OBJECTIVE: Mounting evidence has demonstrated a link between exposure to family of origin violence and the perpetration of teen dating violence (TDV). However, only recently have mechanisms underlying this relationship been investigated and very few studies have differentiated between exposure to father-to-mother and mother-to-father violence. METHODS: The current study used structural equation modeling on a large ethnically diverse school-based sample of male and female adolescents (n=917) to address these gaps in the literature. RESULTS: For adolescent girls, there was an association betwe

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on violence exposure and alcohol use among adults who drink alcohol.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated prevalence of alcohol use and violence, including gender-based violence (GBV); however, little is understood about the pandemic's impact on the relationship between the two. Data were collected from January 2021-April 2023 with adults who drink alcohol (N = 565) in the San Francisco Bay Area. Questions assessed prevalence of heavy alcohol use (≥4 drinks on one occasion ≥4 times a month) in the past 3 months and violence/GBV exposure before and during the pandemic. Logistic regression examined associations between violence and alcohol use. Overall, particip

Socio demographic determinants of violence among school-going adolescent girls in a rural area of North India: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The United Nations defines violence against women as "any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life".[1] Violence can take many forms, including physical, sexual or emotional and varies in its severity. Gender discrimination, norms and practices mean that adolescent girls are likely to experience certain forms of violence, such as sexual violence, at much higher rates than b

Gender-Affirming Care and Comprehensive Sexuality Education.

Every year, an estimated 246 million children are subject to some form of gender-based violence, including mistreatment, bullying, psychological abuse, and sexual harassment. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit, or questioning youth are at a heightened risk of experiencing violence and have unique health, educational, and social needs. Fostering an atmosphere of support and acceptance can help alleviate many of these negative outcomes.

Transgender-specific developmental milestones and associated experiences of violence, discrimination, and stigma among Filipinx transgender women who are sexually active with men.

BACKGROUND: For transgender people, reaching transgender (trans)-specific developmental milestones, including recognizing and expressing one's identity, plays an integral role in overall health, wellbeing, and the pursuit of gender affirmation. Yet trans people continue to face minority stressors, including structural violence (i.e., discrimination, violence, and stigma), which may interfere with the achievement of these milestones. Among trans women specifically, however, potential associations between gender developmental milestones and structural violence are not well characterized in the l

Predicting violence in female forensic inpatients with substance use disorders - the utility of a gender-responsive assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Given that risk assessment tools are commonly based on male samples, the applicability to justice-involved women remains to be clarified. This study aimed at assessing (1) the predictive validity of the HCR-20 V3, the prevailing, yet primarily male-based violence risk assessment instrument, and (2) the incremental validity of the FAM, a gender-responsive supplement, for both inpatient violence and violent recidivism in justice-involved women. METHODS: The sample included 452 female forensic inpatients with substance use disorder discharged from German forensic psychiatric care b

Technology-Facilitated Sexual Violence: A Literature Review of Empirical Research.

Technology-facilitated sexual violence (TFSV) refers to a range of behaviors where digital technologies are used to facilitate both virtual and face-to-face sexually based harms. Such behaviors include online sexual harassment, gender- and sexuality-based harassment, cyberstalking, image-based sexual exploitation, and the use of a carriage service to coerce a victim into an unwanted sexual act. This article reviews the current state of knowledge on these different dimensions, drawing on existing empirical studies. While there is a growing body of research into technology-facilitated harms perp

Typologies of violence against women in Brazil: A latent class analysis of how violence and HIV intersect.

We address the limited understanding around the overlap between violence and HIV in Brazil. Data was from two clinic-based samples of HIV-positive (n = 1534) and HIV-negative women (n = 1589) in São Paulo and Porto Alegre. We conducted latent class analysis and identified violence typologies by type of violence, life course timing, frequency, and perpetrator, stratified by city and HIV-status. Overall, HIV-positive women experienced more lifetime physical and sexual violence than HIV-negative women. Twelve unique violence latent classes were identified. In São Paulo, HIV-positive women were li

Animal health emergencies: a gender-based analysis for planning and policy.

There has been increasing recognition of gender-based inequity as a barrier to successful policy implementation. This consensus, coupled with an increasing frequency of emergencies in human and animal populations, including infectious disease events, has prompted policy makers to re-evaluate gender-sensitivity in emergency management planning. Seeking to identify key publications relating to gendered impacts and considerations across diverse stakeholders in different types of animal health emergencies, we conducted a non-exhaustive, targeted scoping review. We developed a matrix for both acade

Service-seeking behaviors among male victims of violence in five African countries: The effects of positive and adverse childhood experiences.

BACKGROUND: Violence against boys and men is widely under-reported. Boys and men face unique and gendered barriers to accessing services following experiences of violence. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study is a secondary data analysis of five nationally representative population-based Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys (VACS) conducted in Kenya (2019), Côte d'Ivoire (2018), Lesotho (2018), Mozambique (2019), and Namibia (2019). Analysis was limited to males between 18 and 24 years who experienced lifetime physical or sexual violence. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: We analyzed the associat

Evaluating the Alliance against Violence and Adversity Online Training Program: an online curriculum to support children, women, and gender-diverse people.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are Canadian public health concerns and human rights violations that inequitably impact the health of children, women, and gender-diverse people. The Alliance against Violence and Adversity (AVA) developed an Online Training Platform (AVA Online) to facilitate learning about GBV, ACEs, implementation science, and equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility for students, academics, and community partners. This study evaluated the first iteration of AVA Online using mixed-method survey data from platform users.

Unequal power relations and partner violence against women in Tanzania: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Research on factors associated with partner violence against women is often framed within the context of gender inequality and power imbalances between husbands and wives-inequalities that are considered products of broader structural systems. Tanzania, a patriarchal society where high levels of partner violence exists, has gone through rapid economic and social changes over the past two decades. Increasing numbers of women are seeking paid work, and men's ideals of manhood have reshaped with evidence of extra marital relations and alcohol use. Nationally representative population-

Prevention of sexual violence among college students: Current challenges and future directions.

Objective Preventing sexual violence among college students is a public health priority. This paper was catalyzed by a summit convened in 2018 to review the state of the science on campus sexual violence prevention. We summarize key risk and vulnerability factors and campus-based interventions, and provide directions for future research pertaining to campus sexual violence. Results and Conclusions: Although studies have identified risk factors for campus sexual violence, longitudinal research is needed to examine time-varying risk factors across social ecological levels (individual, relationsh
