From 1992 to 1997, multi-drug resistant (MDR) Salmonella Heidelberg isolates were cultured from a number of horses hospitalised in a veterinary hospital in Victoria, Australia. To examine the relationships between the cases, 28 isolates from the hospital were compared by pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), IS200 element profiles, antimicrobial resistance patterns, plasmid profiles and phage typing. The PFGE patterns following digestion with XbaI and BlnI restriction endonucleases showed that the isolates from the veterinary hospital originated from a common source. These isolates also had

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat that requires serious attention, particularly when it is developed against colistin, which is considered one of the 'last-resort' antibiotics for curing an infection. This study aimed to investigate the AMR profile of the Klebsiella (K.) pneumoniae clinical isolates and to obtain the comprehensive characteristics of the carbapenemases among the carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae (CR-KP) when isolated. In addition, to detect the colistin resistance and investigate the MCR genes in the clinical K. pneumoniae isolates for the first tim

The increase in multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterobacteriaceae presents a significant challenge to clinical treatment, particularly in infections where carbapenems and colistin serve as the last-resort antimicrobial agents. In this study, we isolated 119 non-repetitive gram-negative bacteria from MacConkey medium supplemented with imipenem and colistin. The isolates were dominated by Klebsiella pneumoniae (58.0%, n = 69) and Escherichia coli (31.1%, n = 37). The predominant sequence types (STs) of E. coli were ST226, ST1286, and ST11738, whereas K. pneumoniae displayed ST152, ST395, and ST709 as

Motile bacteria employ one or more methods for movement, including darting, gliding, sliding, swarming, swimming, and twitching. Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella carries acquired genes that provide resistance to specific antibiotics, and the goal of our study was to determine how antibiotics influence swimming and swarming in such resistant Salmonella isolates. Differences in motility were examined for six MDR Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium isolates grown on swimming and swarming media containing subinhibitory concentrations of chloramphenicol, kanamycin, streptomycin, or tetracyc

Despite undiagnosed tuberculosis cases, it remains a major global health issue, complicated by antibiotic resistance. Linezolid has been approved for multidrug-resistant (MDR) TB management, but data on its resistance in clinical isolates is limited. This research aims to assess linezolid resistance and identify associated mutations in both sensitive and MDR tuberculosis isolates. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of linezolid was assessed for 60 isolates, including 40 sensitive and 20 MDR strains, using the broth microdilution method. Additionally, the rplC and rrl genes associated w

Clinical strains of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia are often highly resistant to multiple antibiotics, although the mechanisms of resistance are generally poorly understood. Multidrug resistant (MDR) strains were readily selected by plating a sensitive reference strain of the organism individually onto a variety of antibiotics, including tetracycline, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, and norfloxacin. Tetracycline-selected MDR strains typically showed cross-resistance to erythromycin and fluoroquinolones and, in some instances, aminoglycosides. MDR mutants selected with the other agents generally

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria significantly threaten humans and animals worldwide. Colistin is the last resort of antibiotics against gram-negative bacterial infections. Its irrational use in poultry is a major factor in transmitting MDR bacteria to humans. The present study investigated the risk factors, prevalence, and molecular detection of colistin resistance associated with poultry and humans. A total of (n = 140) cloacal swabs from chickens and human stool samples (n = 140) were processed to identify E. coli using conventional methods, followed by genotypic confirmation. Phenotypic

Drug users may represent a hidden reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes among their intestinal flora due to the poor hygiene and inappropriate use of antibiotics. Therefore, this study was focused to examine the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes among intestinal Escherichia coli isolated from drug users in Ahvaz, Iran. Among clients of toxicology laboratory who were confirmed their addiction to each of Morphine, Amphetamine or Methamphetamine, 109 drug users were examined voluntarily for infection with hepatitis B or C using commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assa
