The aim of this study was to assess the skeletal age of Brazilian individuals with Down syndrome (DS) using the method of Greulich and Pyle. Forty subjects with DS between the ages of 6 and 16 years were studied and compared to a control sample of children without DS. The statistical analysis showed that at the age of 7 years the skeletal age (SA) of the individuals with DS was delayed in relation to their chronological age (CA) (SA < CA). On the other hand, at the age of 15 years, their SA was advanced in relation to their CA (SA > CA). An evaluation of the results suggests that the period of

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) represents a heterogeneous group of hereditary, chronic, non-inflammatory skin pathologies. Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is characterized by sub-lamina dura separation, due to blistering below the lamina densa of the basement membrane zone, and is associated with the absence of Type VII collagen fibers. The mouth, pharyngeal, and esophageal mucosa are compromised by scarring and tissue contraction. The purpose of this article was to present a case report on an orthodontic patient with RDEB.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare inherited group of genodermatoses characterized by mucocutaneous fragility and blister formation, either spontaneously or as a result of minimal mechanical trauma. The repetition of these episodes in the oral cavity leads to atrophy of the mucosa, causing microstomia, ankyloglossia, tongue denudation, and vestibule obliteration, characteristics that make dental treatment difficult. Patients with EB are at high risk for caries due to the presence of dental anomalies; they also tend to have a soft diet and difficulties with mechanical removal of the dental bi

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetically determined disease. The chief characteristic of this clinical syndrome is a progressive degeneration of particular groups of muscles. Initially there is physical impairment, contractures, and muscular atrophy. Subsequently, the disease immobilizes the patient (ages 9 to 14 years) and severe respiratory failure occurs due to chest and vertebral column deformity. We present principles for the dental care of patients with DMD. It is important to introduce dental and prophylactic treatment at a very early age for children with DMD.

Epilepsy and other neurological disorders can have profound social, physical and psychological consequences, especially when they begin in childhood. Moreover, seizure episodes may cause fractures, burns, head injuries and oral injuries. This report presents a case history of an adolescent with a severe tongue injury related to epileptic seizures and outlines the proposed treatment, which included use of a maxillary silicone bite guard that allowed healing of the tongue injury within a few months.

Complete dentures were constructed after tooth extraction for a 71-year-old uncommunicative patient with Alzheimer's disease. Although she had never previously used them, her husband requested the fitting of complete maxillary and mandibular dentures. Thirteen teeth were extracted under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation (IVS), followed by impression-making under IVS. Denture fabrication and adjustment were carried out under mild physical restraint. A tissue conditioner was applied to the fitting surface of the denture base followed by regular denture adjustments. The time required for

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder that affects all connective tissue. Clinical manifestations of OI include bone fragility, hyperlaxity of joints, hearing loss, abnormalities of stature and facial structure, blue sclerae, and dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI). OI is classified into four groups according to the severity and physical characteristics of the disease, although not all characteristics may be present in one individual. Currently, 20,000 to 50,000 individuals in the U.S. have been diagnosed with this disease. The aim of this article is to discuss medical and dental compl

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is characterized by several diagnostic features, including oligodontia. Restoration of congenitally missing teeth in patients with WBS is a challenge, both emotionally and clinically. In the atrophied alveolar bone process of a juvenile patient with WBS, the maxillary lateral incisors were replaced with two Immediate Provisional Implants (IPI). Early implant loading was used with temporary acrylic resin crowns that were replaced by semi-permanent restorations; the case has been followed for four years. Restoration of the missing maxillary lateral incisors with IP

Bruxism has been reported to exist in many children with cerebral palsy; however, only a few studies confirm this fact. The objective of this study was to determine the rate of bruxism in children with cerebral palsy and to relate its presence to the following factors: kind of cerebral palsy, gender, age, dentition, degree of malocclusion, oral mucous membrane trauma, trismus, and number of wear facets on specific teeth. The guardians of 121 children with cerebral palsy between the ages of 4 and 9 years were interviewed and the children were clinically examined. Bruxism was detected in 69.4% o

Early diagnosis of oral mucosal lesions has been advocated as a means of improving outcomes of cancer therapy. Improved visualization of mucosal lesions may aid in diagnosis by guiding tissue sampling or referral. This multicenter study reports the effect of chemiluminescent light (ViziLite) upon visualization of mucosal lesions. The chemiluminescent light did not appear to improve visualization of red lesions, but white lesions and lesions that were both red and white showed enhanced brightness and sharpness.

This study was carried out to determine the use of oral healthcare services by children with special needs in Lagos, Nigeria. In this study, 125 structured questionnaires were sent to parents of children in two public day schools for CSN in Lagos. Once the questionnaires were returned, oral examinations were scheduled. The findings were compared to a control group of healthy children from two public schools in the same environment. One hundred and nine CSN and 134 controls, aged 5 to 19 years, participated in the study. The majority of the children had parents who had a low educational level.

Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB) is one of the three major types of epidermolysis bullosa (EB), an inherited cutaneous disease with blister formation following minor trauma. A subtype of DEB is recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa, Hallopeau-Siemens type (RDEB-HS), where marked scarring leads to deformities of extremities. In RDEB-HS the mucous membranes may also be involved and form adhesions with ankyloglossia and microstomia. Oral hygiene is difficult. A 7-year-old boy with RDEB-HS was brought to the Johannes Gutenberg University dental clinic with dental pain. He had multiple c

This case report presents a patient who had a limited oral opening due to systematic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and describes how oral rehabilitation was achieved with a removable partial denture. Various techniques for the delivery of oral health care have been reported for patients who have limited mouth openings as a result of SLE and scleroderma. After a review of the literature, a new approach was required for this patient with SLE who had a very limited mouth opening. The retention for the removable partial denture (RPD) used the undercut in the abutment teeth and a magnet-retained sectio

Lymphangiomas are benign tumors resulting from a congenital malformation of the lymphatic system. Relatively uncommon, lymphangiomas are usually diagnosed at birth and develop within the first years of life. When these tumors occur in the oral cavity, the tongue is the most frequently affected site. Lymphangioma of the tongue is a common cause of macroglossia in children, which may lead to a dry/cracked tongue with ulcerating secondary infections, difficulty in swallowing and mastication, speech disturbances, exclusive nasal breathing, airway obstruction, mandibular prognathism and other possi
