BACKGROUND AND DESIGN: Mucosal and cutaneous manifestations of Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) are usually described separately. Both frequently occur at any time of the illness. The aim of this work was to analyze, retrospectively, dermatologic symptoms of 75 WG cases encountered from 1973 through 1992. All patients fulfilled the American College of Rheumatology criteria for WG. We compared clinical and histologic findings and looked for a relationship between these manifestations, disease activity, and other symptoms of WG.
RESULTS: Thirty-five patients had skin or mucosa involvement. Clinica

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to verify whether stratified epithelium-specific antinuclear antibodies are present in the sera of patients with erosive oral lichen planus and cutaneous lichen planus.
METHODS: We studied the pre-immune and immune serum of a rabbit immunized with a peptide corresponding to the N-terminus of the 70-kDa antigen chronic ulcerative stomatitis protein; sera from two patients, one with oral erosive lichen planus and one with cutaneous lichen planus who presented stratified epithelium-specific antinuclear antibodies at high titer; and a third serum from a patient

46 ambulatory patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia were treated with Prednimustine either continuously (daily or each other day 20 mg) or intermittently (daily 20 mg for 14 days, followed by a pause of 4 weeks). A good response was seen in 28 patients lasting up to 17 + months (mean 4,5 + months) after terminating therapy. Patients without prior chemotherapy have improved earlier and to a smaller amount of the total dose applicated. Signes of bone marrow toxicity (anaemia, thrombocytopenia) were observed in 8 cases, gastrointestinal side effects in 7 cases, cutaneous exanthema in 3 cases

The results are discussed of a retrospective study of 126 patients by whom an excess of the fusospirochaetal complex was found by direct microscopic examination of tonsillar material. These bacteria are not only found in unilateral ulcero-necrotic tonsillitis, but also in different other tonsillar and general diseases. Vincent's angina appears almost exclusively in young persons, aged from 16 to 25 years; in the adolescence (16-20 years) it forms about 40% of all cases of acute tonsillitis. The fusospirochaetal complex is also often found in chronic tonsillitis and even in morfologically norma

OBJECTIVES: Chronic ulcerative stomatitis is a condition characterized by chronic, painful oral ulcers, whose pathogenesis is unknown. Patients demonstrate specific IgG autoantibodies against ΔNp63α, an epithelial nuclear transcription factor. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of patient autoantibodies in the disease pathogenesis.
METHODS: Three-dimensional in vitro tissues consisting of a fully differentiated, multilayer epithelium that mimics its in vivo counterpart were incubated with serum from patients with chronic ulcerative stomatitis.
RESULTS: Our results show a subep

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare benign odontogenic tumor, known as Pindborg tumor. Although ulcer formation was reported in one previously involving the peripheral maxilla, such change of the overlying mucosa has been reported in intraosseous CEOT. We report maxillary CEOT in a patient who complained of spontaneous pain due to extensive ulcer formation of the oral mucosa.

The American Academy of Periodontology has developed the following parameter on the treatment of acute periodontal diseases. Patients should be informed about the disease process, therapeutic alternatives, potential complications, expected results, and their responsibility in treatment. Consequences of no treatment should be explained. Failure to treat acute periodontal diseases appropriately can result in progressive loss of periodontal supporting tissues, an adverse change in prognosis, and could result in tooth loss. Given this information, patients should then be able to make informed deci

Thirty-four patients with acute stomatogenic sepsis developing in grave ulcerative necrotic stomatitis (including that in Stevens-Johnson's and Lyell's syndromes) were examined. Homeostasis parameters were shifted in these patients. To facilitate timely diagnosis of acute stomatogenic sepsis, the authors offer a differential diagnostic table. Patients with grave forms of stomatitis are recommended to be referred for examination and treatment to specialized dentistry hospitals in order to early diagnose the disease and prevent the development of acute sepsis.

INTRODUCTION: Oral health of drug abusers has received less attention. Drug users may also have special needs in relation to receiving dental care. Evaluation of the oral health status of drug abusers is important as in India, where the disease burden is enormous, and availability of curative treatment is quite inadequate, preventive approach shall prove to be better than curative treatment.
AIM: To determine the oral health status and treatment needs of drug abusers residing in rehabilitation centers in Bhubaneswar.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the drug de

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis is widely recognized for its pulmonary manifestations; however, the oral cavity may serve as an early and overlooked site of disease. Although the tongue is the most affected region, gingival involvement is not rare and may cause severe mucogingival destruction. The nonspecific nature of these lesions frequently leads to diagnostic delay.
METHODS: A 25-year-old female presented with a persistent gingival ulcer in the maxillary anterior region associated with progressive recession and soft-tissue loss. Histopathologic examination demonstrated necrotizing granulomatous

Immunological competence and nutritional status are two of the most important determinants of morbidity and mortality. Oral diseases, particularly inflammatory periodontal lesions, are caused by viruses and specific periodontopathic bacteria. Paradoxically, the production of cytokines and oxidant molecules, which are supposed to be part of a highly effective mechanism for combating the periodontal pathogens, may damage the host. Malnutrition consistently impairs innate and adaptive defenses of the host, including phagocytic function, cell-mediated immunity, complement system, secretory antibod
