Controlled serum protein and thyroid function studies were carried out among 208 African patients with endemic goitre. The changes seen in the serum protein constituents were studied and evaluated in relation to thyroid hormone levels, goitre grade and the clinical state of the patient. We have examined the ability of IgGs obtained from 8 endemic cretins to inhibit TSH-stimulated thyroid cell growth in culture. Recent reports suggest that 14% to 23% of thyrotoxic patients have silent (painless) thyroiditis, a newly described syndrome characterized by transient thyrotoxicosis with a low radioactive iodine uptake. PURPOSE: Toxic adenoma is one of the main causes of hyperthyroidism. We investigated the efficacy of surgery in the treatment of toxic adenoma.
METHODS: Serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) measurement, ultrasound and scintigraphy of the thyroid were made for diagnostic purpose. A total of 260 females were studied in an iodine-deficient regions in different periods of gestation. Among them, 123 females were examined during pregnancy and within 3 months of lactation. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy was shown to form a high risk for diseases in both a child and a mother. There is an increased risk for severe complications of pregnancy and labor, for decreased weight and height, and for the worse status of a fetus and a baby of the first year of life. The use of iodine-containing drugs (100 micrograms iodine a day) is highly effective.

High prevalence of endemic goitre (54%) and endemic cretinism (3.5%) exist in Sikkim. The level of intellectual functioning and motor performance were assessed in 90 school children in the age group of 10 to 12 years selected randomly from four severely iodine-deficient villages.
