Recent studies have reported the successful use of guided tissue regeneration procedures with nonresorbable barrier membranes to treat buccal recession in humans. Nonresorbable membranes, however, require a reentry procedure for removal, disturbing the delicate healing process. Resorbable membranes were used in a guided tissue regeneration procedure in nine patients with one site of buccal recession each. The resorbable barrier yielded satisfactory clinical results, providing significant gains in probing attachment and root coverage. However, both the surgical technique and the design of the b…

BACKGROUND: The periosteum consists of an outer fibrous layer and an inner cellular layer, where bone cells reside. Hence, it has been suggested that applying periosteum to a periodontal defect may help new bone formation. The purpose of this case study is to present the clinical and radiographic outcomes of a vestibular regenerative approach and the application of a connective tissue graft (CTG) with periosteum to improve the periodontal prognosis of a pathologically migrated hopeless tooth with an endo-periodontal lesion (EPL).
METHODS: A 35-year-old female presented with a hopeless tooth w

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of a polyglycolic acid-collagen tube and to investigate its possible application in the field of facial nerve reconstruction.
METHODS: Wistar rats were used in this study. In the operation, a periauricular incision was made to expose the buccal and marginal branches of the facial nerve. Gaps of 10 mm were created by resection of a part of the nerve into the marginal branches and the buccal branch of the left facial nerve. The left marginal branch gap was bridged with a 10-mm polyglycolic acid-collagen tube or an autograft. At 12 wee

Articular cartilage that is damaged or diseased often requires surgical intervention to repair the tissue; therefore, tissue engineering strategies have been developed to aid in cartilage regeneration. Tissue engineering approaches often require the integration of cells, biomaterials, and growth factors to direct and support tissue formation. A variety of cell types have been isolated from adipose, bone marrow, muscle, and skin tissue to promote cartilage regeneration. The interaction of cells with each other and with their surrounding environment has been shown to play a key role in cartilage

This case report details the successful treatment of multiple recession type (RT) 3 gingival reces-sions in periodontally compromised mandibular anterior teeth with limited keratinized tissue. A 35-year-old man with stage III, grade C periodontitis underwent a two-stage intervention. Initially, a modification of the connective tissue graft (m-CTG) wall technique was used as part of phenotype modification therapy. The CTG acted as a protective 'wall,' securing space for periodontal regener-ation and thereby enhancing root coverage, soft tissue thickness, and keratinized mucosal width. Recombina

Cell-based therapy is considered a promising approach to achieving predictable periodontal regeneration. In this study, the regenerative potential of cell sheets derived from different parts of the periodontium (gingival connective tissue, alveolar bone and periodontal ligament) were investigated in an athymic rat periodontal defect model. Periodontal ligament (PDLC), alveolar bone (ABC) and gingival margin-derived cells (GMC) were obtained from human donors. The osteogenic potential of the primary cultures was demonstrated in vitro. Cell sheets supported by a calcium phosphate coated melt ele

Subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) is considered the gold standard for treatment of gingival recessions. For ethical reasons, most studies report only clinical and not histologic results. A 20-year-old woman presenting with a localized gingival recession of 5 mm in the mandibular left central incisor was treated with SCTG. According to the initial treatment plan, the tooth was extracted 11 months later and a histologic study was performed, revealing new attachment of connective tissue with collagen fibers that were directly inserted in a perpendicular way into dentin areas and new ce

Gingival recession is an intriguing and complex phenomenon. Recession frequently disturbs patients because of sensitivity and esthetics. Many surgical techniques have been introduced to treat gingival recession, including those involving autogenous tissue grafting, various flap designs, orthodontics, and guided tissue regeneration. This article describes different clinical approaches to treat gingival recession with emphasis on techniques that show promising results and root coverage.

Reuniting denuded nerve ends after a long segmental peripheral nerve defect is challenging due to delayed axonal regeneration and incomplete, nonspecific reinnervation, as conventional hollow nerve guides fail to ensure proper fascicular complementation and obstruct axonal guidance across the defects. This study focuses on fabricating multifilament conduits using a plant-derived anionic polysaccharide, pectin, where the abundant availability of carboxylate (COO-) functional groups in pectin facilitates instantaneous sol-gel transition upon interaction with divalent cations. Despite their advan

The new classification of periodontal diseases recognizes the key role of the interdental clinical attachment for defining the periodontal status and the extent of disease severity. Regenerating interdental clinical attachment not only improves the prognosis of the tooth, but it also lessens the severity of the disease condition. This manuscript provides a state-of-the-art review on surgical reconstructive approaches for treating papillary deficiency associated with soft and hard tissue interproximal defects. Combination therapy of papilla preservation, connective tissue grafting, and coronall

Promising biomaterials should be tested in appropriate large animal models that recapitulate human inflammatory and regenerative responses. Previous studies have shown tyrosine-derived polycarbonates (TyrPC) are versatile biomaterials with a wide range of applications across multiple disciplines. The library of TyrPC has been well studied and consists of thousands of polymer compositions with tunable mechanical characteristics and degradation and resorption rates that are useful for nerve guidance tubes (NGTs). NGTs made of different TyrPCs have been used in segmental nerve defect models in sm

The study of nerve regeneration and functional recovery of the injured peripheral nerves represents a worldwide subject of clinical and scientific research. Our team aimed to obtain the first guide for nerve regeneration, bioartificial and biodegradable, using exclusively Romanian resources and having the advantages of price and quality, over the imported nerve conduits already used in clinical practice. First steps of this project consisted in obtaining the prototype of nerve guide conduit and its' testing in vitro and in vivo. Tests of physicochemical characterization, FTIR (Fourier Transfor

The regeneration of periodontal tissue poses a significant challenge to biomaterial scientists, tissue engineers and periodontal clinicians. Recent advances in this field have shifted the focus from the attempt to recreate tissue replacements/constructs ex vivo to the development of biofunctionalized biomaterials that incorporate and release regulatory signals in a precise and near-physiological fashion to achieve in situ regeneration. The molecular and physical information coded within the biomaterials define a local biochemical and mechanical niche with complex and dynamic regulation that es

Artificial nerve conduits offer an attractive alternative to nerve autografts for the repair of peripheral nerve injuries and several commercially-available conduits are currently on the market. However, at present, utilization of these conduits is limited to the repair of nerve gaps less than 3 cm in length. Thus, current research is focused on how best to design artificial conduits with improved nerve regeneration potential over longer distances. Successful nerve regeneration necessitates that the cells, extracellular matrix components, and growth factors involved interact in a highly specif

The increasing need for biocompatible and sustainable materials has highlighted the potential of natural-based polymers in tissue engineering, particularly due to their bioactivity, degradability, and ability to mimic the extracellular matrix. Polysaccharide-based membranes are especially promising for guided tissue regeneration (GTR) applications, thanks to their biocompatibility, resorbability, and capacity to recreate biological environments. However, their limited mechanical properties present challenges for practical handling during implantation. In this study, double-network polysacchari…

There is a demand for tissue engineering of the bladder needed by patients who experience a neurogenic bladder or idiopathic detrusor overactivity. To avoid complications from augmentation cystoplasty, the field of tissue engineering seeks optimal scaffolds for bladder reconstruction. Naturally derived biomaterials as well as synthetic and natural polymers have been explored as bladder substitutes. To improve regenerative properties, these biomaterials have been conjugated with functional molecules, combined with nanotechology, or seeded with exogenous cells. Although most studies reported com
