[Antimicrobial Stewardship and Hygiene: Prevention of Multidrug Resistant Pathogens].

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) poses a major threat to healthcare systems. Critically ill patients are at heightened risk to acquire MDRO infections resulting in longer hospital stays and higher mortality rates. This article provides an overview of preventive measures, divided into Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) approaches. IPC measures focus on the prevention of MDRO spread by applying basic and extended hygiene strategies. While basic hygiene such as hand and surface disinfection are effective in stopping any path

Comparison of Disinfection Methods for Controlling Microbial Contamination of Edible Sprouts: A Qualitative Systematic Review.

Sprouts, due to their high nutritional value and suitable environmental conditions during the germination process, are an ideal medium for the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. Primary sprout contamination usually occurs through seeds and post-harvest washing. Therefore, effective seed and sprout disinfection can be an essential requirement for the food safety of edible sprouts. In this systematic review, 146 studies published between 2010 and 2024 were evaluated, and the effectiveness of different chemical and non-chemical disinfection methods was investigated. In traditional chemical meth

Role of hospital environmental surfaces in the transmission of the severe acute respiratory syndrome - Coronavirus-2.

INTRODUCTION: Severe acute respiratory syndrome - Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is mainly transmitted via respiratory secretions through coughing, sneezing, or contact with contaminated surfaces. This virus can be present in feces and many body fluids. The study aimed to screen the hospital environment as a potential source for SARS-CoV-2 transmission and identify the hospital zones with the highest contamination levels. METHODOLOGY: Swabs were collected from different sites in the hospital before and after routine cleaning/disinfection, transported in vials containing 1-3 mL of viral transport

Hand-pumps as reservoirs for microbial contamination of well water.

The retention and release of total coliforms and Escherichia coli was investigated in hand-pumps removed from tubewells tapping a faecally contaminated aquifer in Matlab, Bangladesh, and from a new hand-pump deliberately spiked with E. coli. All hand-pumps were connected to reservoirs of sterile water and flushed. Faecal coliforms were observed in the discharge from all three of the previously used hand-pumps, at concentrations comparable to levels measured in discharge when they were attached to the tubewells. During daily flushing of one of the previously used hand-pumps, the concentration o

Outbreaks of epidemic kerato-conjunctivitis in two hospital wards.

The authors analyzed two hospital outbreaks of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC), one at the Department of Ophthalmology (30 cases) and another one at the Department of Premature Newborns (22 cases). In both outbreaks, EKC was diagnosed in inpatients (16 and 6 respectively), outpatients (5 and 3 respectively), healthcare workers (HCWs) (3 and 5 respectively), and relatives of EKC patients (6 and 8 respectively). Implemented infection control measures included isolation precautions, improved disinfection and hand-washing of both hospital and outpatient department personnel. Shortly after impl

The ETA-ESE statement on the European Chemicals Agency opinion on iodine as an endocrine disruptor.

In 2022, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) made a statement concluding that iodine is an endocrine disruptor (ED). "We stress the fact that the ECHA opinion ECHA/BPC/357/2022 is based on their misguidedly zooming in on exclusively the biocidal products (e.g., hand disinfectants, disinfection of animals' teats/udder, embalming fluids before cremation, etc.) that contain molecular iodine (I2), entirely neglecting [see the 2013 ECHA Regulation (EU) n°528/2012 describing iodine as being of "great importance for human health". Clearly, the current sweeping and erroneous classification of "iodine

Estimating spatially disaggregated probability of severe COVID-19 and the impact of handwashing interventions: The case of Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: The severity of COVID-19 disease varies substantially between individuals, with some infections being asymptomatic while others are fatal. Several risk factors have been identified that affect the progression of SARS-CoV-2 to severe COVID-19. They include age, smoking and presence of underlying comorbidities such as respiratory illness, HIV, anemia and obesity. Given that respiratory illness is one such comorbidity and is affected by hand hygiene, it is plausible that improving access to handwashing could lower the risk of severe COVID-19 among a population. In this paper, we est

Skin problems associated with routine wearing of protective gloves in dental practice.

Guidelines on cross-infection control recommend the wearing of operating gloves by dental practitioners whilst carrying out routine examinations and treatment on all patients. However, there are a number of dermatological problems that may be associated with the routine wearing of protective gloves in dental practice. This paper describes the aetiology and clinical features of three types of contact dermatitis, ie irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis and contact urticaria. The management of these skin conditions is discussed. Advice is given concerning routine handcare for

Global landscape of locally produced alcohol-based handrub in health care settings: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Reliable access to alcohol-based handrub (ABHR) is essential for hand hygiene and infection prevention, yet many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) continue to face supply constraints. A 2011 WHO global assessment demonstrated that WHO-recommended ABHR formulations produced locally at low cost, were well accepted by healthcare workers, but also highlighted persistent barriers, including challenges in procuring ingredients and dispensers and in ensuring adequate quality control. This review aimed to provide an updated global synthesis of evidence on local ABHR production in he

The effects of school-based hygiene intervention programme: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Children are susceptible to infections due to frequent participation in school group activities and their often-suboptimal hygiene practices. Frequent infections in children affect school attendance, academic performances, and general health. The effectiveness of school-based hygiene-related intervention programmes need to be informed by updated high-quality synthesised evidence. In this systematic review, we searched PubMed and Cochrane CENTRAL for randomised and non-randomised interventional studies that evaluated school-based hygiene-related interventions. We assessed risk-of-bias (Cochrane

Does a school-based intervention to engage parents change opportunity for handwashing with soap at home? Practical experience from the Mikono Safi trial in Northwestern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: School-based de-worming is advocated as a strategy for reducing the burden of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections among children. However, re-infection tends to occur rapidly, suggesting that comprehensive water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) improvements may be needed to prevent this. We qualitatively assessed the influence of parental engagement activities on parents' motivation to improve WASH infrastructure and hygiene practices at home in the context of a school-based de-worming programme. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a longitudinal qualitative study nested within the Mi

What COVID-19 Reveals about the Neglect of WASH within Infection Prevention in Low-Resource Healthcare Facilities.

The highly infectious nature of the SARS-CoV-2 virus requires rigorous infection prevention and control (IPC) to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 within healthcare facilities, but in low-resource settings, the lack of water access creates a perfect storm for low-handwashing adherence, ineffective surface decontamination, and other environmental cleaning functions that are critical for IPC compliance. Data from the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme show that one in four healthcare facilities globally lacks a functional water source on premises (i.e., basic water service); in sub-Saharan

Hand hygiene and instrument sanitization in ophthalmology clinics.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews the various challenges in infection control in eye clinics and successful measures taken to prevent nosocomial infections. RECENT FINDINGS: The Center for Disease Control recommends hand-washing when hands are visibly soiled, and after direct contact with patients, and inanimate objects such as medical equipment. Published studies have identified poor hygiene in clinical settings as a major cause of nosocomial outbreaks, particularly in cases of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC). Some studies of EKC outbreaks are able to support direct observation of

How we didn't clean up until we washed our hands: shigellosis in an elementary and middle school in North Texas.

BACKGROUND: Shigella outbreaks often continue for months and are linked frequently to poor hygiene and hand washing. Such outbreaks are found often in day care facilities, but rarely are reported in schools. We present the investigation of an outbreak in autumn 2007 at a building that housed an elementary school and a middle school in separate wings in a small Texas city north of Dallas-Fort Worth. METHODS: We canvassed local hospitals, school attendance records, and physician offices for cases. Ill individuals were interviewed using a standard questionnaire for symptoms, disease onset, and t
