Digital health education needs for women with urinary incontinence in Kigali Rwanda, a phenomenological qualitative study.

Urinary incontinence (UI), an involuntary loss of urine, is a widespread pelvic floor disorder affecting 20-50% of women worldwide, with a 21% prevalence in Sub-Saharan Africa. Contributing factors include genetics, childbirth, and chronic conditions, leading to significant physical, social, and emotional challenges such as fear of leakage and isolation. Despite its impact, many affected women lack awareness of UI and available treatments, which include medication, surgery, and pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT). Knowledge gaps and misconceptions persist, hindering timely diagnosis and manage

Management of information within Portuguese families with Huntington disease: a transgenerational process for putting the puzzle together.

Huntington disease (HD) is a rare progressive neurological disease, with no cure, inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion, significantly impacting family relations, health and well-being. So far, no studies have reported how Portuguese families deal with information about HD, from a transgenerational perspective. This qualitative study aims to fill in that gap, and focuses on how families acquire knowledge about HD and management of information within the family and in their social relationships. The study adopted semi-structured interviews with 10 participants from HD families. Interviews

Digital health information-seeking behaviors and trust in AI-based physician chatbots among patients with hypertension: a cross-sectional survey in Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension requires sustained self-management beyond routine clinical encounters, yet evidence on how patients engage with digital health information and what shapes their trust in AI-based physician chatbots remains limited, particularly in Saudi Arabia. AIM: This study examined digital health information-seeking behaviors, information verification practices, and perceptions of AI-based physician chatbots among adults diagnosed with hypertension in Saudi Arabia and tested a theoretically grounded model linking six constructs to chatbot safety and trust. METHODS: A cross-sectio

Enhancing European governance for health crisis management: A proposal for the effective integration of primary healthcare systems into emergency preparedness and response plans.

BACKGROUND: Primary healthcare (PHC) facilities are fundamental components of health systems across Europe, serving as the first point of contact and ensuring continuity of care. However, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant gaps in their preparedness for large-scale health crises. Although emergency preparedness frameworks developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Union existed, they often lacked adequate integration of PHC into comprehensive public health (PH) emergency preparedness and response plans (EPRPs). OBJECTIVES: To identify regulatory and operational g

Type 1 Diabetes Management and Health Care Experiences Across Rural Nebraska.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to explore the unique health care needs of rural Nebraska families with a child with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). METHOD: Using a phenomenological approach, the researchers conducted four focus groups across Nebraska. The focus groups gathered input from children, caregivers, and health care providers (n = 23). The researchers coded data and generated themes. Member checking, researcher triangulation, reflexivity, a thick description of the process, and an audit trail established trustworthiness. RESULTS: Four themes emerged: dramatic family and lifestyle c

Managing the personal side of health: how patient expertise differs from the expertise of clinicians.

BACKGROUND: When patients need health information to manage their personal health, they turn to both health professionals and other patients. Yet, we know little about how the information exchanged among patients (ie, patient expertise) contrasts with the information offered by health professionals (ie, clinician expertise). Understanding how patients' experiential expertise contrasts with the medical expertise of health professionals is necessary to inform the design of peer-support tools that meet patients' needs, particularly with the growing prevalence of largely unguided advice sharing th

People With Haemophilia as Data Coordinators: An Analysis of the Ethics and Feasibility of Self-Management With Personal Health Records.

BACKGROUND: People with haemophilia perform various self-management tasks, supported by multiple health apps. Personal health records will enable individuals to access and add health information from different institutions in a single digital tool, providing an integrated overview of data. Later, individuals will also be able to share their data with health care providers and relatives. This creates a new role for users: Coordinator of data exchange. OBJECTIVE: To analyze if and how personal health records contribute to self-management, with a particular emphasis on the role of coordinating d

Literacy and Public Health: Why America's Reading Crisis is a National Health Emergency.

Literacy is a foundational determinant of health that influences an individual's ability to acquire, understand, evaluate, and apply information throughout life. Recent national assessments demonstrate significant declines in reading proficiency among both children and adults in the United States, raising concerns that extend beyond education into public health. Literacy and health literacy are closely linked to healthcare navigation, preventive health behaviors, chronic disease management, employment opportunities, and informed decision-making. At the same time, rapid technological change has

Health Literacy Needs of Acute Pancreatitis Patients During the Diagnosis and Treatment Process Under the Lens of the Timing It Right Theory: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence and recurrence rate of acute pancreatitis (AP) continues to increase worldwide. The risk of AP attack and recurrence is closely related to the patient's health literacy. Previous studies have shown that AP patients had low levels of health literacy. Understanding patients' experience in AP's diagnosis and treatment process and their health literacy needs might significantly improve their health status. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to understand the experience of acute pancreatitis (AP) patients in the diagnostic and treatment process and explore their health literacy n

Health information dynamics and audience responses to avian influenza on YouTube: Implications for digital public health communication.

Effective management of infectious disease relies not only on biomedical interventions but also on the circulation and interpretation of health-related information. Narratives, whether accurate or misleading, influence public perceptions, adherence to protective measures, and policy debates, as illustrated during COVID-19, measles resurgences, and vaccine controversies. YouTube, as a global platform combining an information repository and interactive discussion space, exerts persuasive influence through its audiovisual formats. Avian influenza, a recurrent zoonotic threat with episodic media a

Caregivers' Perspectives on Medical Management and Its Helpfulness in Down Syndrome.

The World Health Organization defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Medical interventions are often studied for effectiveness in carefully controlled clinical trials, but the parent-perceived, real-world helpfulness of medical management steps on health is less studied. As part of a broader study to create a valid, reliable health measure in DS, we surveyed caregivers of individuals aged 0-21 with Down syndrome (DS) about activities that were helpful for managing their children's health. From February
