MITF variants cause nonsyndromic sensorineural hearing loss with autosomal recessive inheritance.

MITF is a known gene underlying autosomal dominant hearing loss, Waardenburg syndrome (WS). Biallelic MITF mutations have been found associated with a rare hearing loss syndrome consisting eye abnormalities and albinism; and a more severe type of WS whose heterozygous parents were affected with classic WS in both cases. The aims of this study were to identify a new candidate gene causing autosomal recessive nonsyndromic hearing loss (ARNSHL) and confirm its causation by finding additional families affected with the candidate gene and supporting evidences from functional analyses. By using whol

Cognitive Shifting Ability Does Not Predict Self-Perceived Hearing Difficulties in Adult Hearing-Aid Users.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) often leads to hearing difficulties, impacting communication and daily functioning even among hearing-aid users. While hearing loss and cognitive functions, such as cognitive shifting ability, have been proposed as predictors of hearing difficulties, their specific contributions remain unclear. This study investigated whether hearing loss and cognitive shifting ability predict self-reported hearing difficulties across the Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing Scale questionnaire (SSQ) subscales in adults with ARHL who use hearing aids, and whether sex modera

Exploring the Relationship Between Hearing Status, Cognitive Function, and Neurological Symptom Burden: The Impact of Hearing Aids on Veteran Health.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss and related impairments are among the most prevalent service-related disabilities affecting military Veterans. Yet, many of the cognitive and psychosocial implications related to auditory functioning remain insufficiently understood. Growing evidence suggests that hearing aid usage can alleviate cognitive symptoms and reduce psychological, social, and emotional burdens associated with hearing loss. The present study examined associations between hearing status, overall perceptions of health, and neurocognitive functioning in combat deployed Veterans. More specificall

Cortical aperiodic dynamics in hearing impairments predicts neural tracking of speech.

Excitation-inhibition balance is a fundamental property of cortical circuits, reflecting homeostatic plasticity that stabilizes neural activity in the face of functional disruption. This framework has been widely implicated in sensory deprivation and psychiatric disorders. In the auditory domain, it remains unclear how long-term bilateral and unilateral hearing loss reorganizes cortical E-I balance and how such reorganization affects speech processing. Here, we recorded resting-state EEG and measured spectral exponents as a noninvasive proxy for cortical E-I balance in individuals with bilater

High-Resolution fMRI of Auditory Cortical Map Changes in Unilateral Hearing Loss and Tinnitus.

Animal models of hearing loss and tinnitus observe pathological neural activity in the tonotopic frequency maps of the primary auditory cortex. Here, we applied ultra high-field fMRI at 7 T to test whether human patients with unilateral hearing loss and tinnitus also show altered functional activity in the primary auditory cortex. The high spatial resolution afforded by 7 T imaging allowed tonotopic mapping of primary auditory cortex on an individual subject basis. Eleven patients with unilateral hearing loss and tinnitus were compared to normal-hearing controls. Patients showed an over-repres

Assessing the pool activity level (PAL) checklist for use with people with hearing and vision loss.

BACKGROUND: The PAL is a career-completed assessment that indexes cognitive functional ability to inform individualised support. As hearing and vision loss are prevalent, we assessed the PAL for potential bias with hearing or vision impairment. METHODS: We collected PAL responses for 333 adults aged over 60 years in the UK, France, Canada, Greece and Cyprus. All participants had normal cognition based on self-reported status and normal range scores on a cognitive screening test. Using a Kruskal-Wallis test, we compared PAL item response distributions for people with assessed hearing or vision

Hearing Recovery in Patients Treated for Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors related to hearing recovery in patients treated for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL). METHOD: This study included 36 participants (23 men, 13 women) diagnosed with unilateral SSNHL. The inclusion criteria required a confirmed diagnosis of unilateral SSNHL using standard pure-tone audiometry. Associated symptoms, such as new-onset dizziness and tinnitus in the affected ear, were recorded at the time of the initial audiometric evaluation. Information regarding treatment approaches and intensity was collected by ch

Hearing loss and the Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome.

The hearing of 51 female patients with the Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome was examined using otoscopy and standard audiometry. A unilateral or bilateral hearing loss of more than 15 dB Fletcher index was found in 13 of 51 (25.5%). Four of these 13 patients had a hearing loss of less than 20 dB in the worst ear. The remainder had a hearing loss of at least 30 dB in the worst ear. Five of the 13 patients had pure conductive hearing loss; in four of these five, a congenital origin was accepted. Two of the 13 had mixed hearing loss that was a residual symptom from previous otitis media; s

Progressive irreversible hearing loss is caused by stria vascularis degeneration in an Slc26a4-insufficient mouse model of large vestibular aqueduct syndrome.

Hearing loss of patients with enlargement of the vestibular aqueduct (EVA) can fluctuate or progress, with overall downward progression. The most common detectable cause of EVA is mutations of SLC26A4. We previously described a transgenic Slc26a4-insufficient mouse model of EVA in which Slc26a4 expression is controlled by doxycycline administration. Mice that received doxycycline from conception until embryonic day 17.5 (DE17.5; doxycycline discontinued at embryonic day 17.5) had fluctuating hearing loss between 1 and 6 months of age with an overall downward progression after 6 months of age.

Audiometric profile of civilian pilots according to noise exposure.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the audiometric profile of civilian pilots according to the noise exposure level. METHODS: This observational cross-sectional study evaluated 3,130 male civilian pilots aged between 17 and 59 years. These pilots were subjected to audiometric examinations for obtaining or revalidating the functional capacity certificate in 2011. The degree of hearing loss was classified as normal, suspected noise-induced hearing loss, and no suspected hearing loss with other associated complications. Pure-tone air-conduction audiometry was performed using supra-aural headphones and acous

[Head trauma with resultant irreversible deafness on one side and reversible hearing impairment on the other side. A case report].

Following a severe head trauma, a 27-year-old man immediately suffered from bilateral hearing loss and impaired balance. On examination there was a complete loss of hearing on the right side. On the left side a subtotal hearing loss of sensorineural origin occurred and became total after a few days. The vestibular function was absent on both sides. Following treatment with prednisolone, hearing recovered in the left ear and reached an average tone threshold of 55 dB. The vestibular function remained lost from the onset of the trauma. At follow up two years later the subtotal hearing loss in th

Mouse models of age-related mitochondrial neurosensory hearing loss.

Hearing loss is the most common sensory disorder in the elderly population. Overall, 10% of the population has a hearing loss in the US, and this age-related hearing disorder is projected to afflict more than 28 million Americans by 2030. Age-related hearing loss is associated with loss of sensory hair cells (sensory hearing loss) and/or spiral ganglion neurons (neuronal hearing loss) in the cochlea of the inner ear. Many lines of evidence indicate that oxidative stress and associated mitochondrial dysfunction play a central role in age-related neurodegenerative diseases and are a cause of age

Hearing loss in Pompe disease revisited: results from a study of 24 children.

Little information is available regarding the auditory function in Pompe patients. Hearing loss has been reported in classic infantile patients, but it is still unknown whether central nervous system involvement interferes with auditory function and whether enzyme replacement therapy can improve hearing. Auditory function has not been studied in children with milder forms of the disease. We analyzed repetitive auditory brainstem response measurements and pure tone audiometry in 24 children with Pompe disease. Only 1 of 13 patients with milder phenotypes showed recurrent conductive hearing loss

Chronic kidney disease and the risk of incident hearing loss.

OBJECTIVES: There is a strikingly high prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss among patients with chronic kidney disease, with estimates ranging from 36% to 77%; however, longitudinal data are limited. We assessed whether lower baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate calculated using creatinine (eGFRCr ), as well as decline in eGFRCr over time, were associated with incident hearing loss. METHODS: Serum creatinine was measured in 1,843 individuals aged 48 to 80 years without hearing loss at the start of the Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study in 1993. Follow-up creatinine assessments we

Brain plasticity and hearing disorders.

Permanently changed sensory stimulation can modify functional connectivity patterns in the healthy brain and in pathology. In the pathology case, these adaptive modifications of the brain are referred to as compensation, and the subsequent configurations of functional connectivity are called compensatory plasticity. The variability and extent of auditory deficits due to the impairments in the hearing system determine the related brain reorganization and rehabilitation. In this review, we consider cross-modal and intra-modal brain plasticity related to bilateral and unilateral hearing loss and

[Diagnostics of the cochlear amplifier by means of DPOAE growth functions].

Extrapolated DPOAE growth functions can be applied in ENT diagnostics for a specific assessment of cochlear dysfunction. In screening newborn hearing, they are able to detect transitory sound conductive hearing loss and thus help to reduce the rate of false positive TEOAE responses in the early postnatal period. Since DPOAE growth functions are correlated with loudness functions, DPOAEs offer the potential for basic hearing aid adjustment, especially in children. Extrapolated DPOAE I/O-functions provide a tool for a fast, automated frequency-specific and quantitative evaluation of hearing loss
