Is Heart Rate Variability Related to Season of Birth?

BACKGROUND: Season of birth (SOB) has been found to be related to cardiovascular mortality, but the mechanisms are unclear. It is suggested that birth in winter is a protective factor for the circulatory system, and this should be able to be observed using heart rate variability (HRV) measurements. The phenomenon may have a sex difference and is likely to be modulated by climatic factors. This study focused on this problem and investigates healthy school-age children to minimize confounding factors. HYPOTHESIS: Birth in winter is protective to cardiovascular system via autonomic modulation. T…

Slow Heart Rate Predicts New Occurrence of Atrial Fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the relation between baseline heart rate and new occurrence of AF in patients with mild symptoms. METHODS: Patients without pre-existing AF or structural heart disease who underwent 24-hour electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring for palpitations, dizziness or syncope were followed up for new-onset AF. RESULTS: 428 patients (mean age 66.6±10.2 years, 43.7% male) were classified according to the average heart rate into four quartiles (1(st) quartile: <63 beat per minute (bpm); 2(nd) quartile: 63-70 bpm; 3(rd) quartile 70-77 bpm; and 4(th) quartile: >77 bp…

Heart rate turbulence analysis in female patients with fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia is characterized by diffuse musculoskeletal pain and discomfort. There are several reports regarding autonomic nervous system dysfunction in patients with fibromyalgia. Heart rate turbulence is expressed as ventriculophasic sinus arrhythmia and has been considered to reflect cardiac autonomic activity. Heart rate turbulence has been shown to be an independent and powerful predictor of sudden cardiac death in various cardiac abnormalities. The aim of this study is to determine whether heart rate turbulence is changed in female patients with fibromyalgia compared with hea…

Parathyroid hormone and heart rate variability in haemodialysis patients.

BACKGROUND: Depressed heart rate variability (HRV) reflects abnormal cardiac autonomic regulation and has been linked with increased cardiovascular risk and sudden cardiac death. High parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels have also been associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death in haemodialysis (HD) patients. Our aim was to investigate the association between HRV indices and PTH in HD patients. METHODS: Continuous intradialytic electrocardiograms were repeated in stable HD patients 5 times every 2 weeks. The absolute values of high-frequency (HF) and low-frequency (LF) HRV componen…

Heart rate variability in newborns with hypoxic brain injury.

In neonatal intensive care units, there is a need for continuous monitoring of sick newborns with perinatal hypoxic ischemic brain injury (HIE). We assessed the utility of heart rate variability (HRV) in newborns with acute HIE undergoing simultaneous continuous EEG (cEEG) and ECG monitoring. HIE was classified using clinical criteria as well as visual grading of cEEG. Newborns were divided into two groups depending on the severity of the hypoxic injury and outcome. Various HRV parameters were compared between these groups, and significantly decreased HRV was found in neonates with severe HIE.…

Abnormal heart rate recovery on exercise in ankylosing spondylitis.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the heart rate recovery response in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) patients and control subjects. BACKGROUND: Delayed heart rate recovery after exercise reflects AD and independently predicts adverse cardiac outcome. METHODS: Fifty-one patients with AS and 50 age- and matched controls received electrocardiography, echocardiography, and treadmill exercise testing. The heart rate recovery (HRR) index was calculated as the reduction in heart rate from the rate at peak exercise to the rate at the 1st (HRR1), 2nd (HRR2), 3rd (HRR3) and 5th (HRR5) minute after the ces…

Could heart rate play a role in pericardial inflammation?

UNLABELLED: PURPOSE AND MEDICAL HYPOTHESIS: Rest is usually recommended in acute pericarditis, as it could help to lower heart rate (HR) and contribute to limit "mechanical inflammation". Whether HR on admission could be correlated and perhaps participate to inflammation has not been reported. METHODS: Between March 2007 and February 2010, we conducted a retrospective study on all patients admitted to our center for acute pericarditis. Diagnosis criteria included two of the following ones: typical chest pain, friction rub, pericardial effusion on cardiac echography, or typical electrocardiogr…

Gum chewing modulates heart rate variability under noise stress.

OBJECTIVE: Gum chewing may relieve stress, although this hypothesis has not been proven. Heart-rate variability (HRV) is commonly used to measure stress levels. However, it is not known if gum chewing modulates HRV under acute stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of gum chewing on HRV under acute stress. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-over study involving 47 non-smoking healthy subjects, aged 22-27 years, was carried out. The subjects received a stress procedure with gum chewing (GS group) and without gum chewing (S group). Additionally, the other 20 subjects were allo

Autonomic mechanisms associated with heart rate and vasoconstrictor reserves.

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhage is accompanied by baroreflex-mediated tachycardia and vasoconstriction. The difference between baseline and maximum responses is defined as the heart rate (HR) and vasoconstrictor 'reserve'. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that higher HR and vasoconstrictor reserves in subjects with high tolerance (HT) to central hypovolemia is associated with greater reserve for sympathoexcitation and vagal withdrawal compared with low tolerant (LT) subjects. METHODS: R-R intervals (RRI), systolic arterial pressure (SAP), estimated stroke volume, and muscle sympathetic nerve activ…

Idiosyncratic heart rate response in men during sexual arousal.

INTRODUCTION: Heart rate, sensitive to sympathetic activation, is known to change during sexual arousal and therefore may be a useful tool for investigating psychosomatic differences between sexually functional and dysfunctional men. However, heart rate during arousal also tends to be highly variable across individual men, making its predictability based on group patterns relatively poor. AIM: We wanted to determine whether individual men show idiosyncratic heart rate patterns during sexual arousal, that is, whether they exhibit consistent patterns across similar (though not identical) stimul…

Heart rate variability in children with acute rheumatic fever.

OBJECTIVE: Acute rheumatic fever is a systemic inflammatory disease occurring after acute streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis. The PR prolongation in these patients is thought to be due to increased vagal activity. There has been no previous study investigating the autonomic balance in patients with acute rheumatic fever. In this study, we aimed to investigate the balance of the autonomic nervous system in children with acute rheumatic fever by analysis of heart rate variability. METHODS: We evaluated the heart rate variability parameters in 50 patients with acute rheumatic fever and 37 compara…

Heart rate variability predicts ESRD and CKD-related hospitalization.

Autonomic imbalance, a feature of both diabetes and hypertension, may contribute to adverse cardiovascular outcomes. In animal models, sympathetic nerve activity contributes to renal damage but the extent to which autonomic dysfunction precedes the development of CKD and ESRD in humans is unknown. We measured resting heart rate and heart rate variability in 13,241 adults (45- to 64-years old) followed for a median of 16 years in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study. We examined heart rate parameters by quartiles, defining those in the lowest quartile (by time and frequency doma…

Decreased heart rate variability is associated with poststroke depression.

OBJECTIVE: Although decreased heart rate variability (HRV) has been well-documented in association with depression after myocardial infarction, this phenomenon has not been studied in patients with stroke. The present study was designed to prospectively assess heart rate in relationship to depression among patients with acute stroke. DESIGN: Using 24-hour Holter monitoring, HRV was assessed. SETTING: A large university rehabilitation hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with first ever stroke and no other severe physical illness, cigarette smoking, or drug therapy that could affect HRV were eva…

Has electronic fetal heart rate monitoring made a difference.

Electronic fetal heart rate monitoring (EFHRM) has revolutionised our understanding of the function of the cardiovascular system of the fetus during labour, and how the fetus responds to hypoxia. However, although it is a sensitive technique for the detection of hypoxia during labour, it is relatively non-specific for detecting the development of acidosis. Moreover, it is highly dependent on accurate interpretation of fetal heart rate (FHR) patterns, which has been shown to be commonly of a low standard in everyday clinical practice. Use of EFHRM has probably reduced the incidence of birth asp…
