[Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in stomach carcinoma].

This report outlines the results of the first prospective case-controlled study performed within a defined geographic area of southern Germany showing a significant association between Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric carcinoma (odds ratio = 2.18, 95% confidence interval 1.04-4.56). Furthermore, it can be clearly demonstrated that no association exists between carcinoma of the gastric cardia and H. pylori infection. There is no difference in prevalence of H. pylori infection between intestinal and diffuse-type carcinoma (Lauren classification). H. pylori status determination and strai

Mucosal inflammation and disease in Helicobacter pylori infection.

The discovery of Helicobacter pylori as an important gastric pathogen and as one of the most common bacterial infections, now more than a decade ago, completely changed our concepts of both gastroduodenal disease and the immunobiology of the stomach. At this moment, H. pylori is recognized as the cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and as an important causal factor in the chain of events leading to gastric carcinoma. Before H. pylori can lead to gastritis and a chronic immune response the bacterium has to evade and subsequently to interact with the mucosal defence mechanisms. Aft

Blood leukocyte differential in Helicobacter pylori infection.

Helicobacter pylori causes a chronic infection in gastric mucosa, but its systemic effects are largely unknown. Our aim was to characterize the effect of H. pylori infection and gastric mucosal inflammation on the peripheral blood leukocyte count. An endoscopic series of 96 patients (40 men and 56 women), with a mean age of 62 years (range 49-80) was studied. Endoscopy with eight stepwise biopsies was performed and the occurrence of H. pylori was studied from sections stained with Warthin-Starry. The severity of inflammation in antral and body mucosa was estimated. The peripheral blood leukocy

Histological predictors of active Helicobacter pylori infection.

Helicobacter pylori is a common cause of gastritis. No single test is 100% accurate for H. pylori diagnosis. In order to determine whether the presence of typical histological features of H. pylori gastritis may yield diagnostic information, we compared antral histology by H & E stain to the presence of organisms as detected on Thiazine stain of antral specimens, CLOtest, urea breath test and anti-H. pylori serology in 50 consecutive patients. Patients were diagnosed as having active H. pylori infection if at least two of these tests were positive. Patients with only one test positive (N = 5)

[Treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection: current status].

Considering the etiopathogenic relationship of the stomach infection by Helicobacter pylori with some gastrointestinal disease like peptic ulcer, chronic active gastritis and probably gastric cancer, it is worthwhile to consider treatment of this infection at least in some special cases; peptic ulcer (specially duodenal ulcer) with frequent recurrences, and chronic active gastritis with severe dysplasia. It has been demonstrated worldwide that there is an enormous amount of infected patients. For this reason, the development of an oral vaccine probably potentiated with helper elements such as

Alcohol metabolism in Helicobacter pylori-infected stomach.

Studies in our laboratory have revealed that Helicobacter pylori exhibits significant cytosolic alcohol dehydrogenase activity and that the enzyme is fully active at ethanol concentrations prevailing in the stomach during alcohol consumption or after alcohol is completely absorbed from the stomach and is available through blood circulation only. Moreover, even the low levels of endogenous ethanol found in the stomach can be oxidized to acetaldehyde by H. pylori alcohol dehydrogenase. The metabolic significance of the enzyme remains as yet unresolved. Under microaerobic conditions, however, the

[Evaluation of methods for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection].

UNLABELLED: Helicobacter pylori is a gram negative curved bacillus recognized as etiologic agent of chronic gastritis and an important factor in the development of duodenal ulcer and gastric cancer. The purpose of this work is to evaluate three microbiologic methods for diagnosing H. pylori infection. We studied 375 samples from 218 patients, who consulted at the Department of Gastroenterology of the Hospital Vargas and were candidates for endoscopy. Samples of gastric mucous tissue were taken at level of the antrum and each sample was stained with Gram, tested for urease and cultured. RESULT

Helicobacter pylori infection and chronic active gastritis.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is an S-Shaped, gram-negative bacillus that recently has been implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic active gastritis and other peptic ulcer disease. These findings have encouraged gastroenterologists to provide a new rationale for patient management, with hope of providing more successful treatment of peptic ulcer disease, particularly gastritis. Therefore, a cooperative diagnostic effort was made at the pathology laboratory of St Francis Medical Center to adopt a simple and reliable method for the identification of H. pylori in tissue sections of endoscopic

Helicobacter pylori infection and gastritis in healthy Nigerians.

In a study of forty asymptomatic volunteers from northern Nigeria; 35 (87.5%) had histological gastritis and 32 (80%) were infected by Helicobacter pylori. All but one of the patients infected by Helicobacter Pylori had histological gastritis. This high prevalence of H. Pylori infection in young, asymptomatic subjects, occurs in an area with a low prevalence of duodenal ulcer. The possible reasons for this are discussed.

Clarithromycin-amoxycillin therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection.

BACKGROUND: More convenient therapies are needed to treat Helicobacter pylori infection successfully. Clarithromycin and amoxycillin are effective against H. pylori both in vivo and in vitro. Recent success with a high dose amoxycillin-metronidazole combination therapy led us to evaluate clarithromycin-amoxycillin dual therapy for H. pylori infection. METHODS: We tested the combination of clarithromycin 500 mg t.d.s. with meals plus amoxycillin 750 mg t.d.s. with meals for 10 days for its effect on H. pylori infection in 29 patients with documented H. pylori peptic ulcers. There were 27 men a

[Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in symptomatic adults].

AIM: To study the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in different gastroduodenal entities in a wide group of symptomatic patients of our area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 796 (493 females) patients referred to our Hospital for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were studied. Mean age was 51.1 +/- 16.6 yrs. In all patients biopsies samples were taken from the gastric antrum for histological and microbiological (urease test) studies. A patient was considered Helicobacter pylori negative when its presence was not proved by microbiological and histological methods. RESULTS: 70.9% (73.8% males

Helicobacter pylori: microbiology of a 'slow' bacterial infection.

The bacterium Helicobacter pylori lives in the gastric mucus layer of humans and induces a chronic inflammatory response that can result in both peptic ulceration and gastric neoplasms. Helicobacter pylori infection can be considered as a 'slow', adaptive and autoregulating process. The mechanisms by which this slow bacterial pathogen survives and interacts with the host immune system may provide a model for other persistent mucosal pathogens.

[Nodular antritis and Helicobacter pylori infection in children].

We have studied 115 patients infected with Helicobacter pylori (HP). Endoscopic nodular antritis and histologic lymphonodular hyperplasia was noted. The frequency of nodular antritis was compared between the 115 HP patients and a HP-negative age-matched control group. Nodular antritis was observed in 70.4% of the HP-positive patients and 11.3% of the HP-negative group (p <0.001). The specificity of nodular antritis was 86.1%. A significant association was found between the existence of nodular antritis and histologic lymphonodular hyperplasia (67.9%; p < 0.001). In conclusion, the endoscopic n
