OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of same-sex sexual behavior in women in the United States; to describe demographic and behavioral characteristics and the prevalence of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection.
METHODS: As part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys during 2001-2006, women aged 18 to 59 years were interviewed about sexual behaviors using audio computer assisted self-interview. Persons aged 14 to 49 years were tested for antibodies to HSV-2.

This follow-up study evaluated the outcome of sex reassignment as viewed by both clinicians and patients, with an additional focus on the outcome based on sex and subgroups. 22 cases of syphilis were diagnosed in the last part of 1982 in the Department of Dermatology and Venereology. Out of them 21 were male cases and 16 were homo- or bisexuals. Most cases were in the secondary stage and Herxheimer reaction only developed in these. Serological titers to both lipoidal and treponemal antigens were extremely high. All bisexual males were positive in herpes and CMV complement fixation test. Two of the homosexuals appeared with iridocyclitis and motile treponemes were isolated from the anterior chamber in one case.

Gonococcal pharyngitis has been correlated with fellatio in both heterosexual females and homosexual males. This report describes another complication of fellatio, group A beta-eaemolytic streptococcal pyroderma on the penis after exposure to a male who probably had pharyngitis. the erythematous, purulent lesions should be cultured. After the organism has been identified, adequate treatment with either a long-acting parenteral penicillin or a 10-day course of oral penicillin is important in order to prevent the possible life-threatening complication of post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.

A 35-year-old male homosexual with AIDS presented with headache and fever and was found to have cryptococcal meningitis. During the patient's hospital course, his hemodynamic status deteriorated as a result of pericardial tamponade. Antemortem analysis of the fluid was unrevealing; however, postmortem examination of the pericardium revealed typical intranuclear inclusions of cytomegalovirus infection. Cytomegalovirus should be included in the differential diagnosis of pericardial effusion in patients with AIDS.

Among 1454 persons whose stool samples (n=5692) were submitted to a reference laboratory for microsporidia assessment from 1993 to 1996, microsporidia were identified in 338 persons: 261 persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), 16 transplant patients, and 61 others. Data pertain to two waves of interviewing (1987/8 and 1991) from Project SIGMA, a large longitudinal study of male homosexual behaviour in the light of HIV. Results of routine testing at other sites can supplement surveillance of the HIV epidemic in Australia which is largely based upon voluntary testing. Since 1989, systematic onsite HIV testing has been undertaken on all bodies taken to the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM). Three hundred and fifty-two heterosexual males, attending a sexually transmitted disease clinic at Siriraj Hospital from December 1989 to February 1991 were studied for the prevalence of HIV infection. In this paper we present a case history of a homosexual HIV-positive male with a painless nodule on the penis. Screening for sexually transmitted diseases did not detect any infection until the node perforated spontaneously. A diagnosis of lymphogranuloma venereum was made when chlamydia trachomatis type L2 DNA was extracted from the lesion. This case illustrates that standard screening may not be sufficient for making the diagnosis of lymphogranuloma venereum.

We report a severe fatal lepromatous leprosy case in an adult homosexual male 2 years after AIDS class IV was diagnosed. Multidrug therapy including thalidomide for erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) was ineffective. The patient died with multiple large skin ulcerations due to multibacillary leprosy. Leprosy in AIDS patients may present as a severe uncontrolled disease, with extensive ENL unresponsive to therapy.

In a prospective survey of 106 male homosexuals, investigations included smears and cultures of material taken from the tonsillar areas. A diagnosis of gonococcal pharyngitis was made in six cases. This is the largest series so far reported from England. We report the case of a 19-year-old Malian patient, who presented with urethritis and a vesicular rash during the summer of 2022, following a probable heterosexual intercourse. The epidemic context among the male homosexual population and the clinical picture without genital lesions or lymphadenopathy allowed us to discuss both chickenpox and mpox, the latter being finally confirmed by the detection of Monkeypox virus DNA from vesicular fluid.
